  • Patent number: 5269368
Abstract: A reusable cooling and insulating device for bottles and the like is provided in the form of a jacket having a single or plurality of flexible compartments which are interconnected having an inner chamber and an outer chamber therein. A heating and cooling temperature conditionable liquid is housed in the inner chamber which enables the inner diameter of the jacket formed by the inner chamber to confirm with the surface of the object on the which the jacket is positioned for heating or cooling. A flexible insulator of air or air and flexible plastic is positioned in the outer chamber of each compartment for directing a greater temperature transfer from liquid to the object and less heat exchange from the liquid to the environment. The liquid is continuously in direct contact with and pressed upon the bottle or object which contact determines the cooling/heating. The jacket is recharged in a freezer or heated in a microwave depending on the function to be performed.

  • Patent number: 5267788
Abstract: Multi-screw, continuous mixing and kneading machine for plasticizable compounds with screws, which rotate in a housing and which penetrate the cylindrical housing section, enclosing the screw concerned, and exhibit feed and discharge zones and intermediate melting, mixing and kneading zones, where the feed and discharge zones are formed by intermeshing screws that rotate in the same direction, and kneading elements are disposed in the melting, mixing and kneading zones. The kneading elements comprise axially extended polygons, whose surfaces are approximately flat and whose edges travel by one another with small clearance relative to the envelopes of the respective other polygon so as not to intermesh while rotating, where the edges of the housing section enveloping them maintain a distance that is significantly greater than the clearance.

  • Patent number: 5261740
Abstract: A one-piece barrel for a hot-fed extruder extends from drive means at its upstream end to its discharge mouth near the downstream end of the feed screw. This one-piece extruder barrel has a split-level, in-feed opening adapted for connecting a strong, reinforcing converging hopper in close tolerance therewith for feeding molten plastic into the extruder barrel through this in-feed opening. A feed screw propels along the barrel molten plastic fed into the barrel through the in-feed opening. The barrel is a one-piece, integral, strong, cylindrical member with an axial bore whose entire length may be finish machined at one time. Such one-time finishing of the entire bore of a barrel is not possible in prior hot-fed extruder barrels, because they were built up from multiple sections assembled end-to-end to form the whole barrel.

  • Patent number: 5259671
Abstract: Continuous mixers of plastic materials are equipped with greased journal bearing assemblies instead of bulky, expensive, pumped circulating-oil lubricating systems, usually involving oil-cooling heat exchangers with circulating water. Such pumped oil systems having traditionally been employed in the past for lubricating journal bearings of the two rotors in such mixers. Novel thermal isolation of the journals for the two rotors separates their bearing assemblies from the severe heat being generated during mixing of plastic materials by continuous rotation of the two rotors within the mixer barrel. Localized cooling provides heat sinks for the drive and driven journals of each rotor. The rotors are shown as three-piece assemblies with drive and driven journals separate from the main rotor body.

  • Patent number: 5258757
Abstract: A current-output CMOS DAC with a compensation circuit to increase output impedance. The circuit includes an auxiliary MOS current source matched to at least one of the DAC bit-current sources. A comparator compares the drain voltage of the main MOS current source (which is connected to an external reference current source I.sub.ref) with the drain voltage of the auxiliary current source. The output of the comparator controls the magnitude and sign of a correction current which is directed to the main current source transistor and thereby alters the bit-current output to reduce the ouput sensitivity to changed conditions.

  • Patent number: 5257760
Abstract: A scanning sensor having a radiation detector is mounted on a spacecraft or satellite orbiting the earth. The scanner is pointed in such a way with respect to the orbit plane of the satellite that the instantaneous field of view of the detector crosses the region between the lower and upper limits of the travel of a celestial body in a year in order for the radiation detector of the earth sensor to encounter the celestial body at least once per orbit. Electrical signals based on the horizon crossing and the presence of a celestial body in the field of view of the detector are generated and used to derive Yaw, Pitch and Roll attitude information for the satellite with respect to the earth.

  • Patent number: 5252908
Abstract: An auto-TC voltage reference wherein an operational amplifier receives at one input the voltage of a Zener diode and at its other input receives a compensation signal from a feedback circuit comprising a transistor and resistor network. When one of the resistors of the network is trimmed to give a nominal output voltage for the reference, the TC of the reference voltage will have been reduced to zero, or nearly so. The circuitry is capable of compensating Zener diodes of either positive or negative TC.

  • Patent number: 5246200
Abstract: A trouble-shooting, one-quarter-turn quick shut-off valve is mountable directly to a compression-type fitting outlet of a defective shut-off valve in series with the defective valve so that the quick shut-off valve becomes located immediately downstream from the defective valve. Projecting from an inlet end of a housing of the quick shut-off valve is an inlet-tail-tube having an inlet passage extending axially through the inlet-tail-tube. This inlet-tail-tube is adapted for insertion directly into a socket in a compression-type fitting outlet of a shut-off valve. The inlet-tail-tube is made of suitable material for making a compression connection thereto, and the outside diameter of this inlet-tail-tube is equal to an outside diameter often used for flexible plumbing tubing of the type adapted for insertion into a socket of a compression-type fitting for enabling a compression connection to be made between the inlet-tail-tube and the compression-type socket into which the inlet-tail-tube has been inserted.

  • Patent number: 5245166
Abstract: Apparatus for scanning answer sheets with a series of closely-spaced parallel scan lines to produce scan signals for spots closely-spaced along each scan line, thereby producing a rectilinear data array of binary (black/white) representations at the intersections of a rectangular coordinate grid. Marks on the answer sheet are detected and processed to develop and print-out a score for the examinee by means of a dot-matrix printer. Scan spot signals representing the examinee's name written in prior to the test are used to directly control the dot-matrix printer to reproduce the examinee's name. The scan spot signals representing the name are stored with and physically accompany the test results, so that at any time the score data can be printed out together with the examinee's name.

  • Patent number: 5244618
Abstract: Continuous process and apparatus form products from thermoplastic materials between top and bottom mold carriages. A flexible silicone rubber mold on a fiber belt continuously moves around each carriage frame. A surface of desired shape on one rubber mold mates with the desired shape of an opposed rubber mold forming a continuously moving mold channel into which is fed hot thermoplastic material at moldable temperature. After discharging the molded plastic product from the moving mold channel, localized surface heat in the molds resulting from contact with hot plastic is removed from the belt molds by air blown onto mold surfaces. Each carriage frame includes a back-up plate coated with low friction coefficient material over which slides a continuously moving belt mold. These slippery plates have numerous air-bearing holes feeding high pressure air between them and the respective moving fiber belt for reducing friction and wear.
