  • Patent number: 5854635
Abstract: A video storage device capable of realizing a still image-holding mode. The storage device has a serial input-output configuration. A serial input register is connected with a memory array via a transfer gate circuit which selectively permits transfer of data from the serial input register to the memory array. An address counter is connected with the serial input register. In the still image-holding mode, the transfer gate circuit is disabled, and the memory array is accessed in response to counting operation of the address counter. The address counter acts also as a refreshing counter for refreshing the memory array.

  • Patent number: 5818941
Abstract: A digital surround sound decoder. The decoder uses an architecture including two signal processing chips to achieve a program that can decode audio data at sufficiently high resolution. The decoder performs in real time and is compatible with standard surround sound formats. The decoder includes software that utilizes table lookups for critical functions in the decoding process. The processing flow of the decoder's program takes advantage of the multi-function capability within the specific processors used in the design while using a minimum number of program instructions. The program implements band pass filtering, sum-difference calculations, fast-attack slow-decay integration, summation and reciprocal processing, determination of fast and slow modes, look-up table indexing, adaptive matrix processing and various other functions to generate decoded surround sound signals from encoded left and right signal inputs.

  • Patent number: 5809455
Abstract: A method and a device for discriminating a voiced sound from an unvoiced sound or background noise in speech signals are disclosed. Each block or frame of input speech signals is divided into plural sub-blocks and the standard deviation, effective value or the peak value is detected in a detection unit for detecting statistical characteristics from one sub-block to another. A bias detection unit detects a bias on the time scale of the standard deviation, effective value or the peak value to decide whether the speech signals are voiced or unvoiced from one block to another.

  • Patent number: 5804041
Abstract: A method for forming a magnetically oriented thin film on a substrate is disclosed wherein deposition pulses are alternated with magnetic field pulses. In particular, the method includes sputtering a target to deposit a first incremental layer of target material on the substrate, wherein the target is sputtered for a first sputtering time period and the first incremental layer includes randomly oriented first domains. The method further includes generating a magnetic field for orienting the first in a desired direction, wherein the magnetic field is generated for a first magnetic field time period which begins after the first sputtering time period ends. In addition, the method includes sputtering the target to deposit a second incremental layer of target material upon the first incremental layer; wherein the target is sputtered for a second sputtering time period which begins after the first magnetic field time period ends and the second incremental layer includes randomly oriented second domains.

  • Patent number: 5796394
Abstract: A user interface provides a uniform control scheme among different devices in a personal communications routing system. The system allows devices such as a personal computer, personal information communicator, pager, fax machine and base station to be operated with a standard twelve key telephone keypad controller for the purpose of accessing electronic messages such as e-mail, voice-mail, fax transmissions, etc. Handheld communicators are docked with the devices to provide wireless transmission between a base station and numerous devices in a multi-user environment. The base station receives electronic messages for the users in, e.g., an office and routes the messages to a device as the user instructs. The user is able to perform operations on the messages such as reading, responding, deleting, etc., by using the keypad.
