  • Patent number: 7069475
Abstract: A system and method for a software override capability for enforcing a predetermined state for an otherwise hardware-programmable device. Software that may think it knows what it is doing may try to control a hardware device, but may not know about a hardware issue, such as another feature or defect requiring that the device stay in a certain state. The technique programmatically maintains a persistent hardware state independent of any other control software. To other software, the software layer of the invention is indistinguishable and inseparable from hardware. Nothing can slip in between. Any insertion attempt will be detected and disallowed. Features of the processor or system chips actually weld the software to the hardware, which feature disallows any software intervention between the welded software layer and the hardware.

  • Patent number: 7037060
Abstract: An automatic, self-energized, length extending, take-up unit for general use in wall hold down systems. The take-up unit is generally installed as a separate element, independent of threaded retaining elements of a hold down system. One embodiment includes an internal, preloaded, coil spring to rotate a threaded sliding member relative to a threaded base member, thereby to extend a height of the take-up unit. A trigger mechanism may be included to prevent unintended actuation of the unit. Additionally, a safety mechanism may be included to prevent inadvertent separation of a base member and a sliding member, thereby to prevent loss of a preload in an energizing spring.

  • Patent number: 7013300
Abstract: A data extraction tool is provided for cataloging information in an information source for searching by a user. The tool mines information from the information source and organizes the information, or the locations of that information, within a database. A user may then query the tool for a desired type of information. The tool filters the database to provide a set of pinpoint site locations with information of the type requested in the query. These pinpoint site locations are presented to a user and indexed for future reference. The index of site locations may be updated automatically by the tool. A context system is provided for manually or automatically determining the proper context for a user's query. Thus, the data extraction tool provides information with a high probability of relevance to the user. The user obtains the information without expending much effort to refine the search.

  • Patent number: 6988056
Abstract: A signal interpretation engine apparatus and method are disclosed as including a computer programmed to run a feature expansion module, a weight table module, a consolidation module, and a map generation module. The feature expansion module contains feature operators for operating on a signal to expand the signal to form a feature map of feature segments. Each feature segment corresponds to a unique representation of the signal created by a feature operator from the signal across an epoch. An epoch corresponds to an event within a time segment. A consolidation module applies aggregators to consolidate the inner products or superposition segments into a distribution function representing an attribute over a domain reflecting a selected weight table, aggregator, and event type, corresponding to each value of the attribute.

  • Patent number: 6959764
Abstract: An apparatus for promoting the flow of methane gas from a coal bed methane well. The apparatus may include a well casing extending into the earth to a cool seam aquifer. A conduit may be placed within the well and extend from the coal seam aquifer to the earth's surface. A pump may be connected to pump water from the coal seam aquifer through the conduit to the surface. A baffle may be placed in the gap formed between the interior surface of the well casing and the exterior surface of the conduit to the preferentially permit the flow of gas over the flow of water therethrough. The baffle may mitigate well bore pressure fluctuations, thus reducing the occurrence of pump gas lock and reducing well bore damage.

  • Patent number: 6952649
Abstract: A method for predicting the state of a geological formation. The method may include generating a separation key effective to extract a first feature from a signal or signals corresponding to a first state and a second feature, distinct from the first feature, from a signal or signals corresponding to a second state. The separation key may list at least one feature operator and a weighting table. The at least one feature operator may expand a test signal collected from a geological formation of unknown state in at least one of frequency space and time space to generate a plurality of feature segments. A weighting table may weight the plurality of feature segments. The weighted plurality of feature segments may be superimposed to form a third feature. The geological formation may be classified as having one of the first state and second state based on the correspondence of the third feature to one of the first feature and second feature.

  • Patent number: 6901301
Abstract: A method for computerized industrial process control provides computers networked to communicate with one another. Each computer active in the system is responsbile for at least a portion of the process and at least one decision for a process to be controlled and having an output. All activities are characterized by type, the types of activities forming a universal set including sensing facts, linking facts into a meaningful context, and evaluating meaning to formulate a decision. An entity responsible for an assigned decision conducts a series of activities selected from the three types, which may be applied recursively. Decisions are communicated between computers through the system to control the process. Producing output from the process follows according to a combination of decisions reported from each computer corresponding to a responsible person or other entity.

  • Patent number: 6892718
Abstract: A paintball gun is sized and designed to appear like and operate in a manner similar to a conventional handgun. A removable magazine stores projectiles and propellant. The entire magazine is small enough to fit into a handle of a pistol. The magazine may be integrated with propellant and projectile portions locked together or separable. Standard carbon dioxide cartridges fit within the magazine. Paintballs may be staggered to increase the maximum magazine load. A user may selectively release just the projectile portion of the magazine, in order to leave the propellant undisturbed until fully expended. The magazine can be completely removed without substantial loss of propellant.

  • Patent number: 6886662
Abstract: A scaffold support system having an adjustable-width hanger. A vertical leg may support a foot upon which rests a deck, providing a working surface during building construction or modification. A lateral beam rests on a support structure forming part of the wall of a building with the vertical leg securing to the lateral beam at a plurality of points. A stop secured to the lateral beam to capture a support structure between itself and the vertical leg. The stop may be adjustable along the lateral beam to accommodate support structures of varying widths. An operator may insert the hanger from inside a building and pass the coupler through a gap between a frieze block and a top plate, presenting the coupler for securement to the vertical leg. A catch may slide along the foot into and out of engagement with an edge of the deck to prevent rotation of the deck.
