Patent number: 3995528Abstract: An annular frame having a biased target plate thereon is mounted in a selected path of advance of each of the usual plurality of tools of a N.C. machine. Two micro-switches are mounted for operation in sequence upon selected movement of the target plate by each advancing tool. Actuation of the first of these micro-switches slows the advance of the tool, while actuation of the second arrests tool advance and notifies the computer of the N.C. machine that such tool is then in a selected, zero position, from which position all further computer controlled operations of the tool are programmed.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1975Date of Patent: December 7, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventor: William F. Patent number: 3992846Abstract: A plurality of at least two plate or panel-type members are formed with edge portions which hook together to define a key-forming passage therebetween, with tongue-and-groove type interlocks directed laterally from the elements defining both sides of the passage. The passage is filled with initially flowable, solidified key-forming material injected therein under pressure sufficient to cause the injected material to flow along and fill all, or one or more selected portions of the passage. The elements of the panels defining such passage are so formed that the pressurized, injected material tends to expand the passage, and thereby urge adjacent edges of the two panels toward abutting relation with each other, whereby further expansion of the passage is prevented. Upon solidifying, the injected material comprises a key, which interlocks the panels and seals the joint therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1975Date of Patent: November 23, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventor: Keith W. Patent number: 3984974Abstract: A streamline shroud surrounding a jet aircraft engine terminates forwardly of the aft end of the engine tail pipe, which comprises a secondary nozzle. Two or more deflector doors in stowed position combine to form a sleeve surrounding the aft portion of the tail pipe, and the trailing edges of these doors extend downstream and converge beyond the tail pipe to form a primary nozzle, which has an exit flow area smaller than that of the secondary nozzle, and of proper size and configuration to provide required mass flow, velocity and pressure for normal flight operation. The doors swing outwardly and rearwardly on linkage carried by the sponsons to a deployed position spaced aft of the tail pipe and disposed transversely to the tail pipe axis to deflect flow laterally and nullify thrust.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1972Date of Patent: October 12, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventors: George E. Patent number: 3981463Abstract: A thrust reverser for utilization with wing mounted jet powered aircraft discharging exhaust gases over the wings thereof. The jet engine is housed in a nacelle which is affixed to the forward part of the wing of the aircraft and the nacelle is appropriately contoured for connection to the wing to form part of the aerodynamic profile therewith. A blocker door in stowed condition is contiguous the wing and is similarly profiled. The blocker door is pivotable counterclockwise to a deployed condition wherein it intercepts the airstream before the exhaust gases are discharged through the nozzle. A deflector door is formed in the nacelle in the vicinity of the trailing edge thereof, and it is pivotable clockwise to its deployed condition in which it diverts the gases delivered to it by the blocker door. Separate hydraulic actuators, one associated with the nacelle structure, and one with the wing structure are employed to deploy and stow the blocker and deflector doors.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1975Date of Patent: September 21, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventor: Ladislao Pazmany

Patent number: 3982247Abstract: A primary antenna reflective structure is supported for pivotal movement in the elevation direction between the zenith and horizontal points. Drive motors via a bull gear rotates the antenna through its permissible travel. Inertia counterbalance is utilized to control the motion of the antenna. That counterbalance comprises a pinion driven by the bull gear. Left and right guides are integral with the pinion and followers are contained within housings and are adapted to be driven by the guides. The followers move in opposite directions and either compress or relax springs which are housed concentric with the guides. The guides comprise either a ball screw or roller screw, and the followers either a ball nut or roller nut.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1975Date of Patent: September 21, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventor: Kurt Simoneit

Patent number: 3981429Abstract: For the diffusion bonding of members of titanium and some titanium alloys, layers of Cu, Ag and Ni are deposited by plating on both sides of a sheet of etched, chemically clean, titanium or titanium alloy foil of a thickness preferably less than 0.001 inch. The plated foil is interposed between faying surfaces of the members to be bonded together, and the members, with the interposed foil, are sealed under pressure, in an inert atmosphere and under partial vacuum or hard vacuum of, for example, 10.sup..sup.-4 Torr. The parts thus prepared are heated to brazing temperature to render liquidus plating material and thereby establish a diffusion bridge between each plated face of the foil and the adjacent faying surface of each of the members to promote atomic transport of titanium thereacross and established a joint therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1973Date of Patent: September 21, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventor: Elmo G. Parker

Patent number: 3981260Abstract: A surface effect-type ship has vertically depending sidewall skirts that define a shock receiving cavity. A compound keel member is pivotally mounted to the forward end of the bow and is adapted to dampen the shock of waves incident thereon. The keel member includes a skeletal structure over which is clad a resilient and deformable skin. That skin deforms due to the wave pressure so as to present a concave surface to the incident waves. This surface partially diverts those waves into horizontal and vertical components. The vertical components may be cushioned by means of an air bag suitably positioned in the cavity behind the keel member. The vertical forces are transferred to the sidewalls and to some extent are canceled since each side of the keel acts to divert waves. Off center waves are dampened by the feature of the entire keel member being pivotable about its longitudinal axis. The keel is provided with such spring loaded means in constant contact with the sidewalls.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1975Date of Patent: September 21, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventor: Jack H. Hilbig

Patent number: 3981451Abstract: A cascade thrust reverser for a fan-jet engine comprising a two portion shroud surrounding the engine forming a duct therebetween for the rearward directional flow of bypass gases. The forward portion of the shroud is fixed in position. The rear portion of the cowl translatable from a forward reverser stowed position to a rear reverser deployed position. An opening is provided between the two cowl sections for bypass gases to exit the duct when the reverser is deployed. A plurality of pairs of cascade baskets are positioned around the circumference of the cowl intermediate the shroud walls; one of each pair is positioned over the other and nest in a cavity in the forward wall of the rear shroud portion when the reverser is stowed. The innermost cascade baskets pivot into the duct when the reverser is deployed, and direct the bypass gases through the outer cascade baskets for reversing the direction of the flow of bypass gases.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1975Date of Patent: September 21, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventors: Barry W. Prior, John T. Halkola

Patent number: 3971580Abstract: In a transit vehicle having a row of hingedly suspended windows along each side thereof, an individually, manually releasable latch is mounted adjacent the lower end of each window. An inflatable latch actuating member is concealed within each latch, and when inflated moves the latch to unlatched condition. Conduit means interconnects a selected plurality of the inflatable latch actuating members and leads to a valve controlled by the vehicle operator, which valve, when actuated, admits pressurized fluid through the conduit means to inflate its selected plurality of inflatable members.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1975Date of Patent: July 27, 1976Assignee: Rohr Industries, Inc.Inventors: Keith W.
