    Abstract: A music library system that is adapted for the storage of sheet music, is designed for semi-permanent installation in a room having adjoining walls and a floor and includes a frame that is fixedly, removably coupled to the floor and to at least one wall of the room. The frame defines a plurality of drawer openings. A plurality of drawers are movably supported on the floor. Each of the plurality of drawers is disposed in a retracted disposition in close proximity to at least one other drawer in a corresponding drawer opening. The drawers are extendable from the frame outwardly from the wall to an extended disposition wherein a drawer side opening is exposed. The drawer side opening provides access to the stored sheet music.

    Abstract: The invention provides surgical resection instruments, and methods of use, for facilitating accurately cut surfaces for the placement of femoral prosthesis components. The posterior condyles and anterior femoral cortex provide reference points for measurement and cuts of the femur with these instruments. One embodiment of the femoral resection instrument provides for precise anterior cuts of the femur appropriate for one of several sizes of prosthesis components without the need for separate cutting guides. Another embodiment provides for shifting the cutting location of both the posterior and anterior cuts by a portion of the distance between sizes of the prosthesis components while maintaining the reference position relative to the posterior part of the condyles and corresponding intercondylar notch. A third embodiment has an adjustable paddle so that the femoral resection instrument can be adjusted to the correct orientation when the femoral condyles are worn unequally.

    Abstract: An automated external defibrillator automatically performs periodic self-tests on a daily and weekly basis. Self-test failures are identified by a watchdog timer which is reset upon activation of each periodic self-test. If the watchdog timer times out a maintenance indication is activated. The timeout period of the watchdog timer is non-repeating and non-periodic (typically 30 hrs.). Tested functions include the presence and interconnection of defibrillator electrodes, battery charge state, and the operability of the high voltage circuit. Visual and audible indicators are actuated to alert an operator if faults are identified. A record of each self-test is stored in memory, and can be subsequently retrieved through a communications port.

The encoder device has apparatus for sensing electrical power consumption and for sensing a power outage. Additionally, the encoder device has apparatus for periodically generating an encoded RF signal for transmission by the encoder device. The signal has a plurality of discrete components, each of the components being related to electrical power consumption over a selected interval of time. The signal further has a power outage flag associated with each discrete component, the flag being set for any interval of time during which a power outage is sensed. A meter counter for incrementally increasing a count as a function of time is included.

The sensor/actuator has first and second electrodes and a piezoelectric thin film disposed between the first and second electrodes. The thin film is preferably PZT. The sensor/actuator is disposed on a sensor/actuator substrate. The sensor/actuator substrate is formed of a material selected for being resistive to attack by hydrofluoric acid vapor. The invention also relates to a method for fabricating such micromechanical devices or microactuators.

    Abstract: An apparatus for generating a waveform for use in externally defibrillating the heart of a patient includes a plurality of capacitors chargeable to respective charge potentials. Structure including e.g. electrodes is operatively coupled with the capacitors and the control apparatus to apply the waveform to the chest of the patient. The waveform preferably includes an emulated first-phase substantially sinusoidally shaped pulse component having a first polarity. According to biphasic embodiments, the waveform also includes an emulated second-phase substantially sinusoidally shaped pulse component having a second polarity. The control apparatus preferably is constructed to truncate the emulated first-phase pulse component at a predetermined time, preferably based on a design rule used to calculate pulse duration.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for delivering a stepped truncated damped sinusoidal external defibrillation waveform which, when applied through a plurality of electrodes positioned on a patient's torso will produce a desired response in the patient's cardiac cell membranes is provided. Further, the method and apparatus sufficiently approximates a constant current defibrillation shock pulse. The method includes the steps monitoring a patient-dependent electrical parameter and determining a duration based on the parameter determined. First and second charge storage components are then charged. A first truncating switch is then closed to discharge the first charge storage component. After a predetermined delay, a second truncating switch is closed to discharge the second charge storage component. Then, after the duration period that was calculated has expired the switches are opened to truncate the waveform.

A pressure monitor is operably coupled to the processor and is in fluid communication with the at least one bladder for continuously monitoring the pressure in the at least one bladder. A method of effecting a desired pressure in a bladder of an air inflatable mattress is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A demodulator for a pulse width modulated signal comprises a counter arranged to count in one direction when the PWM signal is "high" and in the opposite direction when the PWM signal is "low" to arrive at a count representative of a duty cycle. As a result, a value representative of the duty ratio of the PWM signal can be obtained from the up/down counter. In a further embodiment, the up/down counter is clocked by the output of a frequency multiplier, the output of the frequency multiplier having a frequency determined by the pulse width modulated signal frequency multiplied by a predetermined factor. The value of the duty ratio of the PWM signal can then be found regardless of the frequency of the PWM signal.
