  • Patent number: 6522472
Abstract: An apparatus for displaying an image in space and for providing a background image behind the projected image having an image generator and optical system for projecting an image of an object in an image plane suspended in space. A partially light-transmissive screen is located between the image generator and optical system and the projected image. The screen contains a pattern of juxtaposed light-transmissive regions, through which the image is projected, and regions which are not light-transmissive (ie, substantially opaque areas or reflective surfaces). The background image is printed, or painted, on the opaque areas on the side of the screen remote from the image generator optical system. The screen may be made by printing the background image on opaque areas on a translucent or transparent film, or by printing the background image on a foraminated or perforated opaque sheet.

  • Patent number: 6517889
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of coating a surface of a stent by contacting the stent with a coating solution containing a coating material, inserting a thread through the lumen of the stent, and producing relative motion between the stent and the thread to substantially remove coating material located within the openings of the stent. Eliminating or minimizing coating material located within the openings preserves the functionality of the stent. The method can be used to apply a primer layer, a polymer, either with or without a therapeutic agent, and/or a top layer on the stent.

  • Patent number: 6507913
Abstract: A method and apparatus for protecting smart cards against simple and differential power attacks when they are inserted into card readers controlled by other entities. The technique is particularly useful in financial applications such as ATM cards, credit cards, and electronic wallets, in which cards have to be inserted into card readers which may be specifically manufactured or modified to perform undetectable measurements of the power supplied to the card during its normal operation. The basic technique is to use two capacitors embedded in the smart card in such a way that at any given time one of them is charged by the external power supply and the other one is discharged by powering the smart card chip. The roles of the two capacitors alternate rapidly, and the power supply is detached from the smart card chip in the sense that external power measurements do not reveal information about its internal operations.

  • Patent number: 6503277
Abstract: A method of transplanting human body tissue. Tissue elements are obtained from a human donor and are interconnected at a location remote from an operating facility to form an article to be implanted. The article is then transported to an operating facility where it is implanted into a patient.

  • Patent number: 6502854
Abstract: This invention relates to an air bag system for accommodation behind a vehicle covering. The air bag system contains an air bag, which advances in a main inflating direction when the air bag system is triggered, and a gas generator for supplying the air bag with pressure gas during triggering of the air bag system. The gas generator and the air bag are connected by a gas distributing duct which extends at least partially at an angle with respect to the main inflating direction of the air bag. In this case, the gas distributing duct is formed of air bag material. Furthermore, the invention relates to a manufacturing process and a triggering process for such an air bag system as well as to a motor vehicle having such an air bag system, of which at least the air bag is arranged on a sliding roof frame part.

  • Patent number: 6485225
Abstract: Throughway barrier apparatus comprises a pair of housings (51, 52; 151, 152) to be sited one to each side of a throughway (58). Each housing is provided with an upstanding surface (53, 54) of magnetic material, the two surfaces (53, 54) facing one another. A movable device (65) is magnetically coupled to each upstanding surface, and drive means (60) are arranged to move the magnetically coupled device upwardly and downwardly of the surface (53, 54). A barrier element such as a chain, cable, boom or the like extends across the throughway (58), the barrier element (55; 155a, 155b) being in use connected to the two said movable devices (65) for movement therewith.

  • Patent number: 6412520
Abstract: There is provided a hose for fuel piping which has an inner layer portion having a single layer of a thermoplastic resin having a low fuel permeability, the inner layer portion has a thickness of at least 0.3 mm at a maximum thickness portion, and an outer layer portion of a thermoplastic elastomer. The inner layer portion is laminated to the outer layer portion by a bond strength of 0.6 kgf/cm or less. In a modification, the inner layer portion of a thermoplastic resin having a low fuel permeability can be coated with a thermoplastic resin.

  • Patent number: 6406437
Abstract: A micro-perimeter technique using a portable computer and a projector, and using two screening methods, multi-resolution static and bi-directional kinetic. The static method, as applied to a static test, starts with relatively low-resolutions, and only the unseen zones are selectively remapped under higher resolutions during successive iterations. The bi-directional kinetic method, as applied to a kinetic test, uses a response to a continuously moving target, and the unknown response delay is compensated for by an algorithm that merges the patient's response to measurements at the same visual location, but with opposite scanning directions. Offline visualization of the mapping results is performed automatically superimposed over the fundus image.

  • Patent number: 6353803
Abstract: Apparatus and method for monitoring a system in which a fluid flows and which is characterized by a change in the system with time in space. A preselected place in the system is monitored to collect data at two or more time points correlated to a system event. The data is indicative of a system parameter that varies with time as a function of at least two variables related to system wash-in and wash-out behavior. A calibration map is made on a calculated basis with each pixel or voxel representative of a color hue indicative of wash-out behavior and a color intensity indicative of wash-in behavior. When a satisfactory map is obtained, the collected data is processed on the basis of the map to obtain an image of the preselected place with each spatial unit thereof correlated with a color hue and a color intensity. Software and a data processing system are provided to develop the calibration map. The calibration map and image of the preselected place are also novel implementations.
