    Abstract: An amplifier uses a two-dimensional array of cw diodes to produce a pump beam. A coupler is positioned to receive the pump beam. The coupler reduces a cross-sectional dimension of the pump beam and creates a modified pump beam. A vanadate gain medium is positioned adjacent to the coupler. The vanadate gain medium absorbs at least a portion of the modified pump beam and is positioned to receive an input beam from an input beam source and produce an amplified output beam.

    Abstract: An optical assembly having a light circulating device is used for routing light and may be used with a receiver. The assembly includes a tunable filter for receiving light traveling from the light circulating device and for selecting which wavelengths of light that reach the receiver. A wavelength routing mechanism optically coupled to the tunable filter and located downstream from the circulator is used to prevent undesired dropping of signal wavelengths. The mechanism has a first operational mode preventing light from reaching the receiver and a second operational mode allowing light to reach the receiver. When the filter is tuning, the mechanism is preferably in the first operational mode. Preferably, the assembly has an arrangement of mirror reflections on the first path and the second path so that an even number of mirror reflection are experienced on one path and an odd number on the other path as light is recombined.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for tightening a surface of a skin with an underlying collagen containing tissue applies radiant energy through the skin to underlying collagen tissue without substantially modifying melanocytes and other epithelial cells in the epidermis. A porous membrane is adapted to receive an electrolytic solution and become inflated to substantially conform a contacting exterior surface of the membrane to a skin layer. The membrane includes a cooling lumen for receiving cooling fluid. One or more thermal electrodes positioned in the membrane and transfers thermal energy to the electrolytic solution. The electrolytic solution and cooling fluid creates a reverse thermal gradient from the skin surface to the underlying collagen tissue. A thermal power source is coupled to the thermal electrodes, and a source of electrolytic solution is coupled to the membrane.

    Abstract: A catheter system with an outer catheter body defining at least one lumen and an inner catheter body defining at least one lumen with proximal and distal portions. An introducer is coupled to the distal portion of the inner catheter body. The introducer has a tissue piercing distal end. A resistive heater element is positioned in the introducer. The outer catheter is introduced into a patient's vasculature. The inner catheter is then introduced through the lumen of the outer catheter to a selected heart site. The tissue piercing distal end of the introducer is then advanced into an interior of the heart at the selected heart site. Energy is delivered to the selected heart site from the resistive heater element to create a blood conducting pathway and/or stimulate angiogenesis. In an alternative embodiment, a heart treatment apparatus includes a handpiece with a proximal and a distal end and an elongated member defining at least one lumen coupled to the handpiece distal end.

    Abstract: A method for improving blood flow in the heart provides a catheter system with an outer catheter defining at least one lumen and an inner catheter defining at least one lumen with proximal and distal portions. An introducer is coupled to the distal portion of the inner catheter. The introducer has a tissue piercing distal end. A resistive heater element is positioned in the introducer. The catheter system is introduced into a patient's vasculature. The inner catheter is then introduced through the a lumen of the outer catheter to a selected heart site. The tissue piercing distal end of the introducer is then advanced into an interior of the heart at the selected heart site. Energy is delivered to the selected heart site from the resistive heater element to create a blood conducting pathway and/or stimulate angiogenesis.

    Abstract: A vehicle side bumper or protection device is provided to protect the sides of vehicles such as automobiles against the violent impact of carelessly opened doors of adjacent vehicles parked too close. The bumper or protection device includes an elongated cushioned pad which covers a substantial portion of the automobile side and resists the impact. The pad is releasably secured to a front side portion of the automobile and inside the trunk by a pair of straps and a locking bar. A first strap extends forwardly from the pad and is secured by a hook to the front end. A second strap extends rearwardly from the pad and is secured around the locking bar by a buckle. The locking bar maintains a bias fit against oppositely disposed inside side walls of the trunk. When the trunk is closed and locked, this arrangement makes the bumper or protection device theft resistant. A pair of these protection devices can be used to protect each side of the vehicle.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for directing light at an angle provides an optical fiber with a bevelled end which internally reflects light or refracts light from the bevelled end at an angle to the fiber's axis depending on the bevelled angle. The apparatus also includes a cylindrical probe for surgical applications having a central bore and a cut-out in a side of the probe near one end. The cylindrical probe may have a sharp tip at the one end for penetrating tissue. The optical fiber having a bevelled end is insertable into the cylindrical probe. The bevelled end of the optical fiber is aligned with the cut-out in the cylindrical probe. Light transmitted through the optical fiber is directed from the bevelled end and through the cut-out to provide light at an angle to the axis of the fiber. A bevelled end plug is positioned adjacent to the bevelled end of the fiber. A housing holds the optical fiber and cylindrical probe and limits axial travel. An aspiration connector is coupled to the optical fiber.

    Abstract: A gas valve which is particularly useful in a laser gas fill system requiring repeated fillings includes a conduit positioned between high and low pressure gas regions. Within the conduit is a restriction, and this restriction is closed by a meltable solid material. When the valve is to be opened, heat is applied to the meltable solid material, either internally or externally, causing at least some of the material to flow and allow the passage of gas from the higher pressure region to the lower pressure region. When the pressure between the two regions has substantially equalized, or at least the pressure differential has greatly diminished, surface tension associated with the restriction in the conduit pulls the liquified material back into place to close and reseal the valve, at which point heat application is dicontinued so that the material again becomes solid.

    Abstract: A point of sale bar code scanner, such as a grocery store check-out label scanner, that is attendant-free and completely automated in providing a listing or a total pricing of a customer's selected items. At each automated check-out, the customer initiates the process, places items on a conveyor, which carries each item separately through a scanner. The scanner reads all sides of each package, including the bottom of the package, since the bar code label could be located on any surface. Serial conveyors are used, and gates preferably control the advancement of items onto a conveyor which will carry the item through the scanning area, such that only one item can be scanned at a time. The conveyor in the scanning area includes a series of belt strips through which an upwardly scanned beam can read the package bottom. Various methods and systems are disclosed for handling "no reads". The customer signifies termination of the process at the appropriate time.

    Abstract: A bar code scanner which preferably generates an asterisk-like scan pattern has a scanner head at the end of a flexible mount enabling operator personnel to orient the scanner head in virtually any position and direction. The scan pattern generator is compact in size, utilizing a laser diode as a source, so that the scan head is easily manipulated to the desired position. In preferred embodiments the scanning mechanism generates the asterisk scan pattern with a rotating mirror or mirrors and a series of peripheral mirrors or lenses, one for each scan line, in an efficient and compact arrangement. The entire asterisk scan pattern may be constantly rotated at a relatively slow rate, so that bar code labels are more likely to be read without deliberate orientation by the operator, particularly in the case of bar codes of high aspect ratio.

    Abstract: Three dimensional objects or models, such as three dimensional images or shapes stored in a computer, are generated as real models by addition of material to a base, such as with photo-hardenable liquid, or by removal of material from an initially oversized mass. Optical feedback is employed to monotor the actual condition of the model being formed, at each work site. The condition of the model at the work site, e.g. the presence or absence of material, is fed back to the machine or building tool, or to a computer controlling the tool. On the basis of such monitoring and feedback, decisions are made whether or not to perform more work at any particular work site. In this way, the actual three dimensional model being constructed is made to conform substantially to stored information relative to the desired dimensions of the model. In a preferred embodiment, models are produced by ablating a mass of small spheres held together by a relatively weak wax or cement.

The KTP crystal is placed in an oven or other heating device, which may be regulated or unregulated. The KTP may be cut at the room temperature phase matching angle and angle tuned for operation at the higher temperature, or the KTP may be cut at the correct angle for phase matching at the operating temperature.

    Abstract: Fluctuations in input intensity and pulsewidth affect the frequency doubled output pulse of a fiber grating optical pulse compressor in a compressed, continuous-wave, mode-locked Nd:YAG laser system. An optimized intensity servo system greatly reduces these fluctuations and results in as much as 50 dB noise reduction at low frequencies. Fluctuations in either input intensity or pulsewidth are corrected by changing the input intensity by means of the servo system.
