  • Patent number: 6325153
Abstract: A system and method for controlling production fluid flow from a chamber extending between a casing disposed in a downhole bore and tubing disposed in the casing. A plurality of valves are disposed in respective openings formed in the tubing, and a passage is formed in each valve for connecting the chamber and the tubing interior. The valves are selectively closed to prevent any fluid flow through the passage, and selectively opened to permit fluid flow from the chamber, through the passage, and into the interior of the tubing. Thus, the volume of fluid passing from the chamber, through the valve members, and to the interior of the tubing is controlled.

  • Patent number: 6318463
Abstract: Initially, signals relating to well bore fluids that are generated from sensors in presently available down-hole logging tools are analyzed and/or interpreted by an electronic circuit in a well logging tool. The interpretation of these signals can be direct, differential, or summation measurements from the sensors. The signal interpretations can be qualitative or quantitative, depending on how the tool is set up or programmed of the electronic circuit. When gas/oil, gas/water, or oil/water contacts are made in the well bore, the circuit will send a signal to a set of electromagnets or a drag mechanism that will momentarily grab the walls of the pipe. This will create a line tension spike on the load cell/weight indicator on the surface, and a well log can be generated to show where these line tension spikes occur, thus indicating the depth of various fluids in the well bore.

  • Patent number: 6279651
Abstract: A tool and method for managing fluid flow in a well use flow control and monitoring functions. A particular tool provides valve and metering functions combined with electrical generator and pump functions. Two of these tools can be used such that one generates electricity downhole to power the other tool to operate as a pump or other flow control. A method of managing fluid flow in a well includes operating the tool in either a generator mode or a pump mode. The tool, which is a flow control device, has a body in which an opening is defined between an annulus outside the body and a flow channel inside. The tool also has a flow control body, a rotor and electromagnetic members. A method includes moving the flow control body, the rotor, and the electromagnetic members together to selectively block or unblock the opening. In a particular version of this method, this movement is axially within the body of the flow control device.

  • Patent number: 6246962
Abstract: Adaptive neural networks can be used to effectively enhance signal detection in the inherently noisy environment of an oil well. The neural network can be either non-recurrent or recurrent in nature. The system is implemented with a computer that accepts input from at least one sensor mounted to the wellhead or near the wellhead. The detected contaminated signal is a combination of the event signal and the noise from the environment. The event signal can be, for example, the detonation of a perforation gun. The noise can be either random or periodic. The use of adaptive filtering allows the noise to be more precisely predicted and then subtracted from the contaminated signal to produce a cleaner representation of the event signal. Once the predicted noise is subtracted, the remaining event signal can be analyzed using voice or sound recognition systems to produce an output describing what event occurred.

  • Patent number: 6233746
Abstract: An optic sensor for use in a well is provided. The sensor can be configured to sense downhole conditions, such as temperature, pressure, or stress, either individually or in combination. The optic sensor has a sensor housing that defines a chamber. The sensor housing also defines a region that is responsive to an external force. An optic fiber extends through the housing. The optic fiber has a dielectric boundary that resides within the housing chamber , and has a refractive index variation that provides maximum reflectivity at a central reflectivity wavelength, the central reflectivity wavelength correspondingly shifting with respect to an expansion or contraction of the region. In a further aspect of the invention, the optic fiber has a second dielectric boundary spaced apart from the first dielectric boundary.

  • Patent number: 6230797
Abstract: A retrieval tool provides enhanced functionality for retrieving an item of equipment from within a tubular string in a subterranean well. In a described embodiment, a retrieval tool includes an anchoring device. The anchoring device releasably secures the retrieval tool in the tubular string relative to the item of equipment to be retrieved. An actuator of the retrieval tool may then displace a latching mechanism relative to the anchoring device, thereby displacing the item of equipment relative to the tubular string. The latching device may latchingly engage the item of equipment in response to displacement of the latching mechanism by the actuator.
