  • Patent number: 5491723
Abstract: A wireless communication system includes a plurality of stations each having a plurality of antennas. A first packet, containing a training signal portion is transmitted from a transmitting station using a first selected antenna and received at a receiving station using a second selected antenna which is selected as the antenna giving the best received signal quality, determined during the training signal period. Following transmission of the first packet, a control signal (ACKCNTL) is generated in both the transmitting station and the receiving station to condition these stations for the transmission from the receiving station of a response packet via the same antenna pair used for the information packet transmission. Thus, the response packet need have only a relatively short training signal portion.

  • Patent number: 5486847
Abstract: An apparatus for a pen-based input system, such as personal communication device or notepad computer, which shields against RFI/EMI fields causing problems either in the internal electronics or in the environment surrounding the system. A digitizer used in such a system must be able to sense a location of a special pen used for inputting information. This digitizer is also a source of RFI/EMI fields. A shield of such RFI/EMI fields must allow the digitizer to work and reduce the amount of RFI/EMI released to the environment. A special transparent conductive layer, such as a coating of Indium-Tin-Oxide, beneath the pen input protective plate performs these two necessary functions. The conductive layer also shields the system internal electronics from external RFI/EMI sources such as attached cellular telephone systems or radio LAN systems.

  • Patent number: 5465392
Abstract: In a wireless local area network system including a server and a plurality of mobile wireless stations, the server maintains a table of stations active in the network system and monitors the transmission activity of the stations. If no activity is detected from a station for a predetermined time, a series of watchdog messages is sent requesting a response from that station. The stations are battery powered and operate in an "AWAKE" state to receive or transmit messages or in a SLEEP state of low power consumption. The stations return from the SLEEP state to the AWAKE state in time to receive at least one watchdog message, thereby avoiding the stations being undesirably logged out from the table of active stations.

  • Patent number: 5456712
Abstract: A graft and stent assembly is securable to a first sidewall of a blood vessel having an arteriotomy defined therein, with the blood vessel having a flow of blood therein. The assembly includes a graft which has an orifice. The graft further has an end portion which is positionable within the blood vessel and substantially adjacent to a portion of the first sidewall of the blood-vessel which substantially surrounds the arteriotomy. The assembly further includes a stent which has a second sidewall. The stent is positionable within the blood vessel and in contact with the end portion of the graft so as to secure the end portion of the graft between the first sidewall of the blood vessel and the stent. The orifice of the graft is positioned relative to the second sidewall of the stent so that the flow of blood must pass through the second sidewall of the stent in order to advance through the orifice of the graft.

  • Patent number: 5420599
Abstract: The invention provides for antenna apparatus having antenna members extending parallel to a ground plane, which members are L-shaped and can be provided in advantageously miniaturized form. Two such antenna members can be provided on the same ground plane so as to achieve antenna diversity and a switch mechanism is provided for switching between the antenna member in a receive mode, and for switching to only one of the antenna members for operation of the apparatus in a transmit mode. The switch mechanism is arranged to ground a feed connector of the antenna member that is not selected for transmission or reception so as to render that antenna member passive.

  • Patent number: 5390077
Abstract: An apparatus for cooling an integrated circuit device includes a container defining a chamber that is partially filled with a coolant which forms a coolant pool in the chamber, wherein heat generated by the integrated circuit device causes boiling of the coolant at a heating area of the coolant pool so that vaporized coolant rises upwardly from the coolant pool and condenses on a ceiling of the chamber forming coolant droplets thereon. The apparatus further includes a baffle positioned within the chamber and at least partially out of the coolant pool, the baffle further being positioned within a path traveled by the coolant droplets falling from the ceiling due to gravity, wherein the baffle is configured to guide the coolant droplets away from the heating area of the coolant pool as the coolant droplets fall from the ceiling towards the coolant pool due to gravity.
