    Abstract: The invention relates to a power generation system with a continuously operating fuel reformer. Preferably, the fuel reformer is either off, warming up, or operating with an essentially constant fueling rate. Some of the reformed fuel is intermittently used to regenerate a NOx trap that treats the exhaust of an internal combustion engine. Any reformed fuel not used for other purposes is supplied to a fuel cell. The fuel reformer does not shut down between NOx trap regeneration cycles except when the engine is also shut down. The invention substantially eliminates issues of reformer response time as they relate to NOx trap regeneration.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a fluid power accumulator in which the fluid undergoes a state change as the system is pressurized to store energy. A state change can be a phase change, a chemical reaction, or a combination of these. Generally the state change results from the interaction of a compressible fluid contained in the accumulator with another substance, which can be a fluid or a solid. Preferably, the state change includes the physical adsorption of a fluid by a solid adsorbant. The invention can improve the energy storage density of a fluid power accumulator, allow a given energy storage density to be achieved at a lower maximum pressure, facilitate heat transfer and storage within an accumulator, and/or improve accumulator efficiency by storing energy in a form other than thermal energy, such as in the form of chemical energy.

    Abstract: The invention relates to systems for removing NOx from exhaust. In one aspect of the invention, after adsorption, an NOx adsorber is isolated from the main exhaust flow and desorption induced by raising the temperature. The desorbed NOx is combined with a reductant and reduced over a catalyst. Preferably, the reductant is syn gas produced in an on-board reformer. The catalyst need never be exposed to the main exhaust flow, which is particularly advantageous for catalysts sensitive to water, oxygen, or sulfur. In another aspect of the invention, a recirculating flow is induced through an NOx adsorber during a regeneration cycle. Recirculation can induce greater desorption at a given temperature, provide a source of heat for the adsorber, and allow a higher conversion rate with a fixed amount of catalyst. A further aspect of the invention relates to a vehicle-mounted adsorbers with provisions for heating.

    Abstract: One aspect of the invention relates to a particulate filter useful in treating exhaust from a diesel-power vehicle. The particulate filter comprises filter elements for removing particulate matter and an ammonia SCR catalyst. Ammonia can be produced during regeneration of an NOx adsorbant. The adsorbant can be contained in a separate device upstream of the particulate filter or be incorporated within the particulate filter. Another aspect of the invention relates to a method of cleaning exhaust comprising passing the exhaust over an NOx adsorber to adsorb a portion of NOx from the exhaust; passing the exhaust through a particulate filter to remove particulate matter from the exhaust; and removing a further portion of NOx from the exhaust by reducing it with ammonia over an ammonia SCR catalyst. Preferably, a catalyst contained within the adsorbant provides NO2 for continuously regenerating the particulate filter.

    Abstract: One or more parameters for denitration or desulfations of a LNT is varied, whereby the saturation of NOx and/or SOx in the LNT is reduced to a lower level when an operating state makes the LNT otherwise less effective or places a greater demand for conversion efficiency on the LNT. The operating state can relate to whether the LNT is at the limit of its effective operating temperature range, a degree of poisoning, or an engine operating state. Selectively tolerating high degrees of sulfur poisoning or NOx saturation during periods of low exhaust flow allows the efficiency of denitrations and/or desulfations to be increased over a large portion of a vehicle's operating cycle, particularly when the engine uses a CVT. Another concept relates to a power generation system comprising an engine tuned to efficiently operate in a narrow speed range for all levels of power output.

    Abstract: One aspect of the invention relates to an exhaust treatment apparatus having an NOx reduction system comprising first and second catalyst beds in series with associated first and second ammonia injectors. The first catalyst bed with its associated ammonia injector preferably targets removing only about 80 to about 95% percent of the NOx in the vehicle exhaust. The second catalyst bed with its associated injector preferably target removing about 70 to about 100% of the remaining NOx. Staging the reduction system in this manner improves control over NOx reduction and reduces the risk of ammonia slip. Other aspects of the invention relate to methods of treating vehicle exhaust to remove NOx and an SCR reactor comprising a housing having an entrance port, an exit port, and an ammonia injection port, wherein the injection port is configured to inject ammonia in between SCR catalyst beds contained in the housing.
