  • Patent number: 7384558
Abstract: Therapeutic compositions are provided. The compositions include a single molecule that can display both antioxidant and carbonyl trapping properties. This can effectively reduce inflammation, oxidative stress and carbonyl stress, such as to prevent and/or treat cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseases in kidney disease patients.

  • Patent number: 7208479
Abstract: The present invention provides a peritoneal dialysis solution that contains heat stable osmotic agents such as D-glucitols, gluconic acids and alkylglycosides produced the reduction, oxidation or glycosylation of icodextrins respectively. As a result, osmotic agents that are stable under autoclaving or heat sterilization conditions are provided which reduces the amount of bioincompatible materials in the sterilized peritoneal dialysis solutions. Methods of preparing the D-glucitols, gluconic acids and alkylglycosides are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7118857
Abstract: Methods and compositions for detection of microbial contaminants in peritoneal dialysis solutions are provided. The methods and compositions employ modified bioburden testing and the detection of peptidoglycan. A novel cause of aseptic peritonitis is provided—aseptic peritonitis associated with gram positive microbial contamination of a dialysis solution. Peptidoglycan is a major component of a gram positive bacterial cell wall and thus can serve as a marker for gram positive bacteria. In this regard, testing for peptidoglycans can be utilized to effectively prevent peritonitis in patients that use the peritoneal dialysis solutions, such as peritoneal dialysis solutions that contain a glucose polymer including an icodextrin and the like.

  • Patent number: 6623638
Abstract: A dialyzer is provided comprising a casing defining an interior and including a dialysate inlet and a dialysate outlet. A plurality of fibers are located in the interior of the casing and define a fiber bundle. A dialysate inlet fluid channel is provided in fluid communication with the dialysate inlet and includes a plurality of flutes that extend into a portion of the fiber bundles, the flutes define an opening for allowing dialysate to flow from the inlet fluid channel into the interior of the casing. Methods of providing dialysis are also provided.

  • Patent number: 6508800
Abstract: A dual-filled twin bag, a packaging including the twin bag, and a method for forming the packaged twin bags are provided. Each of two bags, a solution bag (10)and a drain bag (12) for a system used for a peritoneal dialysis procedure, are filled, at least partially, with a solution (14). A tubing set (16) connects the two filled bags (10,12) and may also be filled with solution (14) which is added to the bags (10,12) and the tubing set (16) during the manufacturing process. Alternatively, the tubing set (16) may be filled with air. The tubing set (16) is sandwiched between the solution bag (10) and the drain bag (12) and subsequently packaged in an overpouch (24). The method for forming the package including the bags filled with solution is simplified and the overall package size is reduced due to the sandwiched tubing set (16) between the solution bags (10,12) and the provision of solution in both bags (10,12).

  • Patent number: 6497676
Abstract: An automated peritoneal dialysis system and method are provided for monitoring and controlling automated peritoneal dialysis therapy based upon intraperitoneal pressure measured at a point near the end of the patient catheter during the fill, dwell and drain phases of automated peritoneal dialysis therapy.

  • Patent number: 6475529
Abstract: The present invention provides devices and methods for stabilizing bicarbonate-based solutions for peritoneal dialysis or hemofiltration. The bicarbonate-based solutions of the present invention are formulated and stored in at least two parts—an alkaline bicarbonate concentrate and an acidic concentrate. The alkaline bicarbonate concentrate is adjusted to have a pH of about 8.6 to 10.0. The acidic concentrate is adjusted to have a stable, acidic pH ranging from about 1.0 to 3.0. Upon mixing, although some variation in the pH of the mixed bicarbonate solution exists, the inventors have discovered that with the appropriate selection of the parameters of the concentrates, the pH of the mixed solution is always within an acceptable physiological range.

  • Patent number: 6380163
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved dialysis solution. The improved dialysis solution provides for the use of specific polypeptides as an osmotic agent with an additional osmotic agent such as dextrose. To this end, the present invention provides, in an embodiment, a peritoneal dialysis solution comprising as osmotic agents approximately 0.25 to about 4.0% (w/v) polypeptides and approximately 0.5% to about 4.0% (w/v) dextrose. The polypeptides have well defined characteristics.
