  • Patent number: 6910374
Abstract: A method of using an everting borehole liner to perform fluid conductivity measurements in materials surrounding a pipe, tube, or conduit, such as a borehole below the surface of the Earth. A flexible liner is everted (turned inside out) into the borehole with an internal pressurized fluid. As the liner displaces the ambient fluid in the borehole into the surrounding formation, the rate of descent of the liner is recorded. As the impermeable liner covers the flow paths in the wall of the hole, the descent rate slows. From the measured descent rate, the flow rates out discrete sections of the borehole are determined.

  • Patent number: 6902564
Abstract: Method and devices for electrosurgery by means of oxy-hydro combustion. Deleterious effects to tissue are minimized by means of control of acid-base shift reactions, which reactions can further be employed to control oxy-hydro combustion reactions. In one embodiment, radiofrequency energy in electrical connection with electrodes is employed to induce electrolysis in an aqueous salt environment, thereby producing oxygen and hydrogen, with the same energy source employed to initiate a combustion reaction.

  • Patent number: 6898586
Abstract: A database design and maintenance system and method includes a software suite designed to assist users with creating, storing, updating and reusing full-text and bibliographic databases. The software suite includes three components configured to operate on any Java-enabled server. The first component is an intranet system for document entry, editing, and viewing. The second component is an indexer that includes concept extracting, statistical collecting, and rule building functionality. For example, when a text document is entered into the intranet system, the concept extractor scans the document to determine appropriate subject terms for identifying the document. These subject terms are reviewed by a human indexer and assigned to the document. The statistical collecting function analyzes the concept extractor's performance in finding appropriate indexing terms and maintains a record of the hits, misses, and noise.

  • Patent number: 6859282
Abstract: An apparatus and method for locating the boundary surface between a layer of fatty tissue and lean tissue in a cut of meat, such as beef, such as slabs of meat undergoing trimming and cutting in commercial meet processing facilitates. The invention exploits the fact that fatty tissue and lean tissue have significantly different responses to incident light energy. By gauging the degree to which a generated beam of light is scattered and reflected by the tissues under evaluation, the invention permits the character of the tissue to be ascertained. An incident beam of light, such as green light, is generated and transmitted to a probe tip, which tip is inserted into the cut of meat under investigation. The light beam is emitted into the meat tissues from the probe tip, and then is scattered and reflected by the tissues, whereupon some fraction of the emitted light returns to the probe tip.
