  • Patent number: 7787525
Abstract: A wireline telemetry system and method of transmitting data on multiple carrier frequencies. The system and method adjust power level and number of bits-per-carrier to optimally or near-optimally utilize the capacity of the wireline cable. Due to the nature of wireline telemetry the overall power level is restricted only by the output capability of the downhole telemetry cartridge and the input power restrictions of the uphole telemetry unit receiver. The optimal power level is determined during a training sequence and is a function of such factors as cable length, cable material, cable temperature and cable geometry. The uplink and downlink transmission are executed using different modulation techniques.

  • Patent number: 6564995
Abstract: A multi-application smart card has a persistent storage unit. The persistent storage unit stores data and/or information that indicates which application is to be run the next time the smart card is inserted into a terminal. The persistent storage unit may indicate the same application, a different user-selected application, or an application-selection application is to be run next. Alternatively, the persistent storage unit may indicate the next application on a predefined list as the application to be run next. An application-selection terminal allows a user to manually select the user-selected application. The terminal may initiate communication with the smart card by sending a special, predefined signal to the smart card.

  • Patent number: 6543690
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for communicating with a host. In one embodiment, a smart card has an IC with voltage conditioning circuitry and a pull-up resistor. The smart card, when inserted in a smart card reader coupled to the host, is capable of signaling the host over a bus using the pull-up resistor selectively coupled to a voltage output of the voltage conditioning circuitry and a first output of the smart card. The voltage conditioning circuitry output is selectively coupled to the first output through the resistor, responsive to the device being powered by the bus but not transmitting. This tends to pull up the first output to the voltage level of the voltage source, which makes the smart card capable of being properly detected by the host upon the bus being driven by a host. Selectively disconnecting the pull-up resistor while the smart card is transmitting or receiving results in a more balanced differential output signal.

  • Patent number: 6373489
Abstract: A method, computer system and article of manufacture for visualizing a model including a first surface is disclosed. The method includes determining, as the model is being built, the rendering resolution of a portion of the first surface based on a view frustum from which the first surface is to be viewed and rendering the portion of the first surface on the output device using the rendering resolution. The vertices and edges to be rendered are selected based on the view frustum, using view frustum culling and bounding sphere projection. The vertices and edges selected to be rendered are tessellated using incremental and decremental tessellation. The tessellated vertices and edges are rendered. Predictive techniques are used to estimate future view frustums. Quality may be traded off against performance by adjusting parameters. Material properties are represented.

  • Patent number: 6295505
Abstract: A method for efficiently and accurately producing filter coefficients for wavefield extrapolation which is particularly useful for migrating seismic data using a multiprocessor parallel computer as provided. In 3D seismic migration, the techniques have been developed for 3D processing using 1D extrapolation filters. The present invention uses a Remez-type approximation for developing such extrapolation filters which increases image quality or reduces processing time, or both. Additionally, the method provides an automated method for producing such extrapolation filters which is particularly useful in parallel seismic migration because of the large number of extrapolation filters which must be produced. The automated method of generating filters sets a frequency transition band where the amplitude is specified to be monotonically decreasing which insures stable filter design.

  • Patent number: 6175599
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving acquired digital data over bandpass channels (i.e. channels having a limited range of frequencies) at high data transmission rates. Combined amplitude and phase modulation (quadrature amplitude modulation) is applied to the digital data and the sampled digital waveform converted to an analog waveform for passage over the bandpass channel. The sample rate is chosen as an integer multiple of the symbol rate and carrier frequency to significantly reduce processing overhead. Reception of the acquired data is similar to transmission and involves an analogous amplitude and phase demodulation. The quadrature amplitude modulation technique of the present invention is applied to an oil well-logging application to transmit the data acquired from the downhole logging instruments over the logging cable (bandpass channel) at high transmission rates.
