Abstract: A ring or inverted-cup shaped cutting element is used as a tool electrode for electromachining to rough machine the airfoils on blisks to near net shape. The cutting element is rotated and positioned with respect to the blisk by a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) drive arrangement.

Abstract: Eddy current inspection of a contoured surface of a workpiece is performed by forming a backing piece of flexible, resiliently yieldable material with a contoured exterior surface conforming in shape to the workpiece contoured surface. The backing piece is preferably cast in place so as to conform to the workpiece contoured surface. A flexible eddy current array probe is attached to the contoured exterior surface of the backing piece such that the probe faces the contoured surface of the workpiece to be inspected when the backing piece is disposed adjacent to the workpiece. The backing piece is then expanded volumetrically by inserting at least one shim into a slot in the backing piece to provide sufficient contact pressure between the probe and the workpiece contoured surface to enable the inspection of the workpiece contoured surface to be performed.

Abstract: An x-ray imaging device includes a borescope and an x-ray detector positioned at a distal end of the borescope. The x-ray detector can be configured to be movable into and out of an optical path and can include a scintillation screen. The movably configured x-ray detector can be moved into the optical path, when x-rays are impinging, and out of the optical path, when a visible image of a test object is desired, facilitating navigation of the x-ray detector through a test object. The x-ray imaging device can include an imager, for converting an image to an electronic format. The imager can be positioned at the proximal end of the borescope, with the borescope including a waveguide, for guiding light to a proximal end thereof. Alternatively, the imager can be positioned between the distal end of the borescope and the x-ray detector.

Abstract: An IR transient thermography imaging system includes high-power flash lamps fitted with spectrally tuned optical filters and a focal-plane array camera for IR image data acquisition. The image data processing control computer analyzes acquired IR image data frames and provides a color-keyed display of an imaged object that correlates to object thickness over the imaged surface area. Acquisition of IR data is initiated at a firing of flash lamps used to heat a surface of the object along with a reference standard. A predetermined number of IR image frames are acquired and recorded over a predetermined period of time after firing of the lamps to develop a temperature-time (T-t) history of the object surface and the reference standard. A contrast curve is calculated for each pixel in the image frame, each pixel corresponding to an elemental region on the object surface.

Abstract: An apparatus for drilling cooling holes through a wall of a hollow component is disclosed. First, a laser drill is used for drilling at least one rough blind hole within a component wall, for example a turbine airfoil, so as to retain a residual bottom plate portion. Next, an electro discharge machine (EDM), for example a rotating EDM or plunge EDM, is used for finishing at least one rough blind hole so as to create at least one finished hole and breaking through the bottom plate portion.
