  • Patent number: 5836550
Abstract: The invention is a mechanism for the streamwise deployment of an aircraft trailing or leading edge flap. The mechanism connects the spar and flap. There are a pair of swivel links which pivotally connect the spar to the flap. There are also a pair of slaving mechanisms which rotationally connect the spar to the flap by spherical bearings. A linear flap actuator initiates the combined pivotal and rotational action from the spar which translates into a single downward and rearward motion of the flap.

  • Patent number: 5753523
Abstract: Organic films are applied from solvent solution to a substrate, then are ion implanted to have resistivity in the kilohm/square to gigaohm/square range. The films are then patterned by standard lithographic procedures, with surprisingly little loss of conductivity, in spite of contact with organic solvents or acidic or basic etchant solutions during the patterning process. Both structures which contact the substrate, and freestanding conductive polymer bridges, can be formed. The invention provides a method of producing electrical devices which does not require the use of single crystal semiconductor substrates or deposition of inorganic semiconductors. The resulting devices are highly resistant to damage from abrasion, solvents, acids, bases, and moisture.

  • Patent number: 5727497
Abstract: The invention is a flag system for displaying a flag from a hood of an automobile. The primary embodiment consists of a mast with a pin which is inserted into the mast. The pin prevents the flag from creeping up the mast. The flag system is held in position between the hood and car by a tongue. A threaded portion and a threaded nut are located on the mast. The threaded nut is tightened, clamping the tongue onto the car hood.

  • Patent number: 5660886
Abstract: An improved protective coating system for metal substrates is described. Nickel-aluminide duplex coatings are improved by adding an effective amount of boron in the nickel coating step and by retaining the boron during the aluminization step. An unexpected result of the retained boron is its non-deleterious effect on oxidation protection. During aluminization, the boron surprisingly migrates to the coating/substrate interface, forming a diffusion barrier in situ. The barrier inhibits both inward diffusion of the nickel-aluminide coating and outward diffusion of substrate impurities. The process enables thinner, less expensive coatings.

  • Patent number: 5614150
Abstract: A method for producing aluminum matrix composites containing refractory aluminide whiskers or particulates which are formed in-situ is disclosed. Aluminum and refractory metal materials are blended in powder form and then heated to a temperature above the melting point of aluminum. A solid/liquid reaction between the molten aluminum and solid refractory metal provides a desired volume fraction of refractory aluminide reinforcement phase (in situ whiskers or particulates). Upon cooling the molten, unreacted portion of aluminum solidifies around the in situ reinforcements to create the improved composite material.

  • Patent number: 5578676
Abstract: A composition and a method for forming an anti-reflective layer for DUV microlithographic processes is disclosed. The compositions of the present invention includes a polymer dissolved in a suitable solvent. The polymers are polysulfone and polyurea polymers which possess inherent light absorbing properties at deep ultraviolet wavelengths. In accordance with the method of the present invention, these compositions are applied to a substrate to form an anti-reflective coating, and thereafter a photoresist material that is compatible with the anti-reflective coating is applied.

  • Patent number: 5427763
Abstract: A method for making vanadium dioxide (V.sub.2 or V.sub.2 O.sub.4) powders from vanadyl sulfate without using SO.sub.2 gas, comprises evaporative decomposition of a vanadyl sulfate hydrate spray, entrained in a nitrogen atmosphere at O.sub.2 partial pressures that would normally predict V.sub.2 O.sub.5 V.sub.2 O.sub.3. The yield of VO.sub.2 (also identified as V.sub.2 O.sub.4) is substantially improved, and occurs at lower temperatures, by the addition of hydrogen gas into the atmosphere. Surprisingly, there is no production of V.sub.2 O.sub.3. Minor amounts of a suitable dopant salt dissolved in the spray provide improved low transition temperature powders.
