Abstract: The present invention relates to a system for calculating a digital quality index (DQI), which provides a rating on a predetermined scale, indicative of the impairments in a received quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) signal in a CATV cable system. The DQI system utilizes bit error rates prior to and after forward error correction to calculate the DQI value. To increase the calculation rate, the bit error rates can be estimated using voltage errors, signal to noise ratios and/or average corner error metrics.

Abstract: The invention relates to a magnetic latch for securing substrates on a planetary rotating platform suspended above a coating source in a vacuum chamber of a vapor deposition system, e.g. a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system or a physical vapor deposition (PVD) system. The magnetic latch includes a permanent magnetic, which is moveable between a latching position, in which the permanent magnet magnetizes the latch for attracting a substrate holder, and an unlatching position, in which the permanent magnet is connected in a bypass circuit, thereby demagnetizing the latch for releasing the substrate holder.

Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for sensing which faults have occurred in a laser control system, as well as trapping and identifying the first fault occurrence. The apparatus includes an integrated circuit in which a mask register is set by means of a micro-controller or a host system to select which fault sources are to be recorded. A status bit register in which the fault indications are stored can also be interrogated by the micro-controller or a host system. A settable first fault status register determines whether every fault or only the first fault gets recorded.

Abstract: A Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer modulator structure for fiberoptic telecommunications is disclosed in which drift of the operating point can be monitored with a reduced phase tracking error. One or more components of free-space light radiated into the substrate of the MZ modulator are selectively detected with one or more photodetectors. Suitable summing circuits are described for nulling out undesired photocurrent contributions in the photodetector(s) from on-state and off-state light radiated from the MZ.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for using interpolation to associate timestamp values to data received in a data capture and analysis system. An analysis processor receives data representing data transferred in a communications link. The analysis processor also receives timestamp signals. The analysis processor performs an interpolation between at least two timestamp values received and associates results of the interpolation with the data. The analysis processor analyzes the data. A logic device can be coupled to the analysis processor to interleave timestamp signal values with the data and transmit the interleaved data and timestamp signals to the analysis processor.
Abstract: A novel method is disclosed wherein a reflective coated organic substrate is releasably coated with a thin film coating having one or more layers for forming flakes once removed from the reflective substrate. The reflective substrate is conveniently used to make glitter after the flake material is removed.

Methods for generating hydrogen to power vehicles and vehicles utilizing the inventive technology, stationary devices, such as space heaters and water heaters, capable of generating hydrogen for use as a fuel additive therewith, and methods of generating hydrogen using such devices are also provided.
Abstract: A highly roll stable suspension system for a truck, trailer, or semi-trailer. In at least one embodiment, the suspension includes at least three beam structures, one beam being located beneath each respective longitudinal side frame member of the vehicle, and a third beam being located midpoint between the side frame members and which occupies substantially less space than the space between these opposing longitudinal side frame members of the vehicle.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring spectral tilt uses an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) to separate a multiplexed optical signal having a plurality of wavelength channels into a plurality of sub-bands, where each sub-band spans a different wavelength range and includes more than one wavelength channel. A photodetector array is provided to measure the optical power in each of the sub-bands, while control electronics calculate spectral tilt of the multiplexed optical signal using the measured optical power in each of the sub-bands. The spectral tilt monitor in accordance with the instant invention provides spectral resolution, increased monitoring speeds, and decreased manufacturing costs.
Abstract: Packet tracing in switched packet networks. Tracing of live packet data in a network is performed by discovering the measurement path, setting up dynamic filters along the path to collect traffic information, and collecting data as detected by the dynamic filters. Collected data is sent to a measuring entity. Filter setup may be repeated to capture data as routing changes.
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved algorithm for estimating the 3D shape of a 3-dimensional object, such as a human face, based on information retrieved from a single photograph by recovering parameters of a 3-dimensional model and methods and systems using the same. Beside the pixel intensity, the invention uses various image features in a multi-features fitting algorithm (MFF) that has a wider radius of convergence and a higher level of precision and provides thereby better results.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for measurement and monitoring of in-band optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR). A two channel optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) is advantageously applied in acquiring wavelength division multiplex (WDM) signal data after it has been split according to polarization, then deriving the in-band OSNR from acquired data due to its narrow bandwidth, selective spectral shape, and capability to analyze two components of a polarized signal simultaneously. The in-band OSNR can be measured without interrupting optical transmission traffic in the network.
Abstract: The method for qualitative and quantitative detecting of the extend of use and the correct process flow of the mammalian aerobic glucose fermentation metabolic pathway (mam-aGF) in a mammalian individual is characterized in that the enzyme TKTL1 is used as indicator and target molecule and that the structural and/or functional parameter of said TKTL1 in a biological sample of said individual (patient) are taken as indication for the qualitative and quantitative run of the mam-aGF in the cells and/or tissue of said individual (patient). In combination with the use of inhibitors and activators of that mam-aGF the method is further suitable for checking and controlling the mam-aGF in an individual (patient).
