Abstract: An apparatus for correcting a spinal column having damaged vertebrae comprises a fastener (which is preferably a pedicle screw) having a receiving slot for holding a distracting or compressing bar. The bar is positioned within the slot in a manner permitting adjustment and is then locked in a fixed position, both functions achieved by a special two-part locking element which first holds and then rigidly locks the bar and fastener together. A method for correcting a spinal column having damaged vertebrae is also given.

Abstract: A hip joint femoral prosthesis has a rod, the proximal end of which has a cross-section of oval shape and a surface area increasing towards the proximal end. At least one wall of the proximal end includes alveoli therein hollowed out so as to present a maximum depth on their side towards the proximal end. The alveoli are of a circular or semi-circular shape and intersect, thereby providing a surface which improves the stability and anchoring of the prosthesis into the femur.

Abstract: A femoral spacer for positioning a femoral prosthesis is disclosed comprising a hollow body portion having an outside surface and an inside surface. The outside surface is adapted to contact the intramedullary canal wall, and the inside surface is adapted to contact the proximal portion of the prosthesis such that the prosthesis is substantially centered within the intramedullary canal.

Abstract: A series of substituted phenylacetic acid compounds and their derivatives, including the pharmacologically acceptable base salts of said acids, have been found to be active as oral hypoglycemic agents. Preferred member compounds include 6-ethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid, 6-benzyloxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid, chroman-4-carboxylic acid, p-chlorophenylacetic acid, o-methylphenylacetic acid, o-methoxyphenylacetic acid, p-methoxyphenylacetic acid and .alpha.,.alpha.-di(4-methoxyphenyl)acetic acid. Synthetic routes leading to those member compounds which are novel per se are described in some detail.
