    Abstract: The invention is related to analog to digital conversion of a multi-level analog signal at a very low sampling rate. The analog signal is sampled by a recovered clock to produce a succession of samples of the analog signal. The low sampling rate may be within an order of magnitude of the symbol rate of the analog signal. Each sample is converted to a digital word. A phase detector reference circuit determines from peak values of the analog signal at least two allowable levels of the analog signal including a reference-crossing level. The phase detector defines a zero band of amplitude ranges of the analog signal including the reference-crossing level. It further defines an error band of amplitude ranges of the analog signal extending from said zero band to a fraction of the amplitude of the next allowable level. The phase detector then infers either a positive or negative phase error for each pair of successive samples of the analog signal.

    Abstract: A LAN modem permits unambiguous routing for multiple workstations located on a LAN to each gain access through the LAN modem to any one of a number of different remote servers located on a number of different remote networks using a combination of public port number and public address of the workstation. There are instances where sessions are changed between the same workstation/server. This changing of sessions changes the public port numbers associated with each session, which destroys the above unambiguous routing, since the combination of a public destination IP address and a private destination port number is no longer the same unique value contained in an address translation table of the LAN modem. A four step hierarchical procedure is provided in which the LAN modem determines which workstation the packet is to be routed based upon value of fields stored in the network address translation (NAT) table or value of fields stored in a static table.

    Abstract: For installing a cable duct around a cable buried in the ground, the duct is propelled by a propelling device formed of a solenoid and a corresponding core member of a magnetic material, and a duct transporting device. The core member is provided with a coupling which couples to a free end of the cable. The solenoid is driven by a current so as to maintain, during operation, the free end of the longitudinal member, coupled to the core member, in a fixed position with respect to the transporting device. The propelling operation is supported by feeding a fluid under pressure through the duct, with the foremost end of the duct being provided with a spouting member. Suitable design of the core member in combination with a suitably varying current for driving the solenoid allows increased dynamic propelling operation and consequently improved performance.

Another aspect of the invention is the use of such mixtures of Bayesian networks to perform inferencing. A mixture of Bayesian networks (MBN) consists of plural hypothesis-specific Bayesian networks (HSBNs) having possibly hidden and observed variables. A common external hidden variable is associated with the MBN, but is not included in any of the HSBNs. The number of HSBNs in the MBN corresponds to the number of states of the common external hidden variable, and each HSBN is based upon the hypothesis that the common external hidden variable is in a corresponding one of those states. In one mode of the invention, the MBN having the highest MBN score is selected for use in performing inferencing.

There is disclosed a method for selecting a path or paths between two selected points in a network, said network comprising a plurality of points interconnected by links, comprising the steps of deleting from the method all points other than the selected two points having a single link to the remainder of the network to produce a reduced network, and repeating the deletion step until there are no points, other than the two selected points, which are connected to the remaining network by a single link.

A radially extending stop element, situated on the shaft, has a surface configured to abuttingly engage with a complementary surface on the stopping piston such that the stopping piston, once appropriately positioned, controllably stops continued movement of the working piston in a very short time and over a very short distance with little strain induced in the apparatus.
