    Abstract: A dual cantilevered beam structure is attached to a silicon frame. An optical fiber extends from a borosilicate wafer bonded to the bottom of the frame. A second borosilicate wafer is bonded to the top of the frame. The bottom borosilicate wafer is bonded to the optical fiber with a bonding agent having an index of refraction between the refractive index of the fused silica optical fiber and the refractive index of the borosilicate wafer. In an embodiment, the bonding agent has a refractive index substantially similar to optical cement. Light is reflected into the optical fiber from the beam structure for measuring seismic changes.

    Abstract: The disclosure describes a method and apparatus for effectively communicating data along an acoustic transmission path. The method comprises driving an acoustic transmitter to send a data signal along the acoustic transmission path, where the signal is distorted by ambient noise. The distorted signal is input to a spaced apart plurality of sensors so that consequent time-delayed signals provide reinforcement of the basic signal and attenuation of the ambient noise component when combined.

    Abstract: Downhole mechanical or electrical equipment that possess, induce or supply large electromagnetic interference or magnetic fields are sometimes placed in subterranean wells, usually as part of or attached to wellbore tubulars. These magnetic fields can interfere with the efficient operation of some electronic, gyroscopic or magnetic well tools that pass by, through, near or adjacent to such downhole equipment. In general, a subterranean magnetic field protective shield apparatus is provided which reduces or substantially eliminates this magnetic field interference or enhances the operation of, or minimizes damage to, sensitive electronic or magnetic well tools. Such a subterranean magnetic field protective shield enhances the operation of other tools and protects other devices from adverse effects of magnetic fields stronger than the earth's magnetic field intensity.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method of communicating in a tubular system (20) through a media (65) disposed therein and actuating a controllable device (58) are disclosed. The apparatus and method utilize a transmission apparatus (16) at a transmission node that is in communication with the media (65). The transmission apparatus (16) generates pressure impulses that are propagated through the media (65). The pressure impulses may be either positive or negative pressure impulses depending upon the selected transmission apparatus. The pressure impulses are detected by a reception apparatus (77) at a reception node. The detection apparatus may detect the pressure impulses as variation in the media (65) or as variation in the tubular system (20) caused by the pressure impulses. Once the detection apparatus (77) has detected the appropriate pressure impulse or pattern of pressure impulses, a signal may be generated to actuate the controllable device (58).
