  • Patent number: 4285114
Abstract: The applicator includes a plastic disc having a central hole therein. Integral with the disc and extending from the upper side thereof is a tubular handle, the bore of the handle being in alignment or registry with the hole in the plastic disc. By means of the handle the disc can be rotatively oscillated against the uppermost paper filter of a stack of such filters so as to induce electrostatic charges thereon with the consequence that the filter clings to the lower side of the disc. The disc is slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the paper filters to be transferred, and the peripheral diameter of the paper filters is slightly greater than the diameter of the coffee maker basket. In this way, when the plastic disc and the filter being electrostatically carried thereby is inserted into the coffee maker basket, the peripheral edge of the filter is deflected upwardly, the frictional engagement causing the filter to remain in the basket when the plastic disc is retracted.

  • Patent number: 4263873
Abstract: The animal litter comprises a cellulose litter material that contains a pheromone-like attractant substance which makes the litter attractive to animals seeking a place to defecate and/or urinate. The litter material is pelletized to give the litter a consistency comparable to that of fine gravel. The pellets formed from the litter material hydrate slowly but positively and are disposable in water. The density of the pellets is such that they retain their structural integrity on hydration. The pellets are formed from ground paper which has been moistened with sufficient water to hold the particles together but not so much as to cause the pellets to feel moist. An acid salt may either be added in the water or as a dry powder to the ground paper. This salt carried by the water in the pellets neutralizes the animal urine (and the ammonia-like compounds formed from it) while maintaining the pH of the litter at a level acceptable to the animals.

  • Patent number: 4219736
Abstract: An answer document or form, on which the user darkens certain discrete response areas with a graphite or lead pencil to denote his selected choices or data entries, has a bias bar printed across one end with the same color ink used in printing the remainder of the document. When the document is read by the optical scanner, the light passing through the translucent paper also passes through the printed bias bar. Analog voltage signals are obtained from each of the photocells in the optical scanner and these signals are capacitively stored, then converted to digital values. The digital values are averaged and the individual digital values for each photocell are compared with the computed average to check for bad cells. If a poor photocell response persists for a predetermined number of answer documents, the entire scanning operation is stopped.
