Abstract: An improved X-ray image converter is disclosed which utilizes a phosphor layer of plate-like rare earth oxyhalide phosphor crystals having said phosphor crystals physically aligned to improve light emission from the phosphor layer. More particularly, said phosphor layer is formed with the plate-like crystals being aligned generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of said phosphor layer at both surface regions while the intermediate phosphor crystals are aligned generally perpendicular to said longitudinal axis. Said improvement can be provided during formation of phosphor layer from a liquid suspension by introducing particular velocity gradients in the flow pattern of said liquid suspension.
Abstract: A lead-free sealing glass consisting essentially of, in parts by weight, 8-25 BaO, 20-35 B.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 45-72 Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3 except for incidental impurities, residual fluxes and refining agents provides an improved molten sealing action especially useful for high temperature electric lamp envelopes and other electrical devices. More particularly, a protective molten seal utilizing said sealing glass is formed between a refractory metal inlead which extends into a larger sized opening of a fused quartz member by filling the free space between said opening in the fused quartz member and the refractory metal inlead with the aforementioned sealing glass composition and thereafter converting the sealing glass to a molten condition during device operation.

Abstract: Rare earth oxyhalide phosphors activated with thulium ion and further incorporating scandium ion are described exhibiting improved optical resolution for the light image produced therefrom in X-ray image converter devices by reason of the particle size and shape of the phosphor crystals. A multilayer X-ray screen construction utilizing said phosphor material is also described exhibiting improved image sharpness attributable to said phosphor improvement. A preparation method is disclosed wherein the selected oxyhalide is recrystallized in a particular manner to produce phosphor crystals having a more polyhedral shape.
Abstract: A control circuit provides full range power control to a pair of electrical loads via a single two-wire power cable by controlled switching of a bidirectional solid state switch during each consecutive half-wave cycle to supply power to one load during each positive half-wave cycle and to the other load during each negative half-wave cycle. The switching during each half-wave cycle is controlled by a respective trigger circuit. Interference by power supplied to one load with the operation of the other load is prevented by removing any residual voltage from the respective trigger circuit at the end of each half-wave cycle.
Abstract: A discrete type starter for HID lamps uses a ferrite core pulse transformer whose secondary is connected in series with the lamp across a ballast output winding. The primary is formed by mounting one or more sidacs and a resistor astride the core loop and interconnecting them by cladding on the board to make two or three turns around the core. The primary is connected across a capacitor which is connected in series with an impedance across the ballast output winding.
Abstract: A capacitively ballasted low voltage lamp comprising a main capacitor connected electrically in series with the lamp, across an alternating current source, and one or more auxiliary capacitors that can be connected electrically across the main capacitor by switching means for one or more source waveform cycles. The minimum lamp current is established by the main capacitor, with additional lamp current flowing through one or more auxiliary capacitors during one or more source waveform cycles.
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a reinforced strip of insulative material comprising the steps of extruding a thermoplastic insulative material in the shape of a tube or spaced apart strips about a plurality of separated and substantially parallel reinforcing strands positioned within said tube or strips and compressing and cooling the tube or strips to form a flattened single strip having opposed flattened sides with the reinforcing strands firmly secured therebetween is disclosed. A reinforced support for a ballast resistor manufactured in accordance with the described method is also disclosed.

Abstract: A high efficiency general service incandescent lamp is disclosed. The disclosed improved general service incandescent lamp has an outer and an inner envelope. The inner envelope has a relatively small housing containing a halogen gas and a relatively high pressure efficient fill-gas and in which a low voltage filament is spatially disposed therein.
Abstract: A discharge lamp comprising an elongated bulb shaped so that the ends thereof are substantially closer together than if the bulb were straight and containing electrodes respectively near said ends thereof, and a starting air comprising conductive members respectively adjacent to said bulb behind the plane of each of said electrodes, and means electrically interconnecting said conductive members.
Abstract: A vehicle lamp, such as a headlamp or fog lamp, having a concave reflector truncated at its top and bottom, one of the truncated surfaces being closer to the optical axis than the other truncated surface, and both truncated surfaces being substantially non-reflective. This achieves significant glare control without requiring a separate shield between the light source and the reflector.
Abstract: A polycarbonate orientable refractor for a luminaire comprises a mounting ring which has a collar portion fitting a neck portion of the refractor with matching diameters. A diametric interference is provided between a groove in one part and a mating ridge in the other part to an extent allowing a snap fit. Shallow interfering ribs and valleys in the mating surfaces controllably lock the parts together while allowing angular indexing for orienting the light distribution pattern of the refractor.
Abstract: A rapid start fluorescent lamp comprising a pair of cathode mounts each having a pair of lead-in wires for cathode heating current, and a thermal switch to turn off the heating current after sufficient cathode heating for the lamp to operate. A third lead-in wire in each mount bypasses the thermal switch and is used for heating the cathodes to activate them during manufacturing.
Abstract: An improved incandescent lamp comprising an inner envelope disposed within an outer envelope is disclosed. The inner envelope contains a halogen gas along with a relatively high pressure efficient fill gas. The inner envelope houses a tungsten filament which is partly surrounded by a separate light-transmissive cylinder. The separate cylinder has on one of its surfaces a selective infrared reflective filter capable of efficiently operating at a temperature range of up to and including about 950.degree. to about 1050.degree. Abstract: In a luminaire comprising an upper housing assembly for a light source and a lower plastic refractor closing the underside and having a rim adapted to mate with that of the assembly, C-shaped latches are disposed around the periphery of said refractor for clamping the rims together when pivoted into position astride both rims. Circumferentially extending bail wires attach the latches to the underside of the refractor rim and allow them to be pivoted into clamping position while preventing them from dropping off when disengaged. The bail wires pass through holes molded in the plastic of the refractor rim.
Abstract: A capacitively ballasted low voltage lamp utilizing a main capacitor connected electrically in series with the lamp, across an alternating current source, and one or more auxiliary capacitors that can be connected electrically across the main capacitor by switching means for one or more source waveform cycles. Each switching means comprises a unidirectional conductive device electrically connected in parallel with an active switching device. The minimum lamp current is established by the main capacitor, with additional lamp current flowing through one or more auxiliary capacitors during a source waveform cycle or integral multiples thereof.
Abstract: A pair of 48-inch long preheat fluorescent lamps, each one and a half inches diameter and consuming less than 10 watts power per foot of length, are connected in series with each other and with a ballast, for operation from 50 or 60 hertz a-c line voltage in the range of 200 to 300 volts. A starter switch is connected in parallel across each lamp. The lamp designs are specified such that they will start and operate in the circuit from the a-c line voltage.
