  • Patent number: 6750034
Abstract: Here we describe the molecular identification of a cDNA encoding a novel serine protease we have termed D-G. The deduced amino acid sequence, and it's alignment with other well characterized serine proteases clearly indicates that it is a member of the S1 serine protease family. We have found that the protease D-G mRNA is widely expressed in several tissues throughout the body including epidermis, fibroblasts, keratinocytes, colon, small intestine, stomach, lung, kidney, bone marrow, lymph node, thymus, ovary, prostate, uterus and spinal cord. Interestingly, this protease contains a hydrophobic stretch of amino acids which is a putative transmembrane near the NH2-terminus. Thus, this serine protease is thought to be synthesized as a type II integral protein.

  • Patent number: 5146414
Abstract: Method and apparatus for adapting the volumetric flow rate measurement system taught by Yelderman in U.S. Pat. No. 4,507,974 to clinical environments by reducing the effects of physiological noise. Signal processing techniques are used to characterize the background noise power spectrum of the system under test so that the effect of noise aberrations on the measured data may be eliminated and so that the predominant periodicities of the background noise spectra may be avoided. The invention further cross-correlates the input data of the system with the corresponding ouput data of the system to determine weighting values for each input frequency so that data collected at noisy frequencies is discounted. Low frequency noise or drift is also removed from the output signal by fitting the average of the output data to a quadratic function which is then subtracted from the original output signal, point by point.

  • Patent number: 4230676
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for composting organic material, wherein a plurality of frame members are spaced from each other, and a plurality of support members are connected to each frame members. Hollow, perforated conduits are connected to and extend between corresponding support members of adjacent frame members. The conduits are movable vertically along the support members. An evacuator withdraws fluid from the compost material through the conduits, and an injector may inject treatment material into the compost material through the conduits. An analysis system is provided to analyze the composting state of the organic material and to determine any treatment necessary required by the organic material as a result of the analysis of the composting state.

  • Patent number: 3998798
Abstract: Monellin, an intensely sweet polypeptide, substantially free from carbohydrate, is described. Monellin is the pure proteinaceous principle of the fruit Dioscoreophyllum cumminsii, having a molecular weight of approximately 11,000, an isoelectric point of 9.3, and an ultraviolet absorption maximum (.lambda. max) of 277 nm. A process for the production of monellin is described which includes the steps of extracting the fruit with an aqueous medium, separating the extract into a carbohydrate containing fraction and a proteinaceous fraction substantially free from carbohydrate, and recovering the proteinaceous fraction substantially free from carbohydrate.

  • Patent number: 3959193
Abstract: A combination of an aryl sulfonamide-formaldehyde resin and film forming material, such as cellulose acetate butyrate, which may further include a surfactant, such as a non-ionic surfactant including, for example, an alkylarylpolyether, comprises a "universal" dispersant for resin additives, such as pigment materials. This composition generally includes 40 - 90 weight % of any of various types of additives, including pigments. The dispersant generally comprises from 30 - 80 weight % film former or binder, which may consist of cellulose acetate butyrate or a solid plasticizer, such as camphor, sucrose benzoate and dicyclohexylphthalate, and from 20 - 70 weight % of the aryl sulfonamide-formaldehyde resin. Apart from pigments, the additives may consist of fillers, extenders, etc., includng, for example, calcium carbonate, antimony oxide and magnesium silicate.
