Abstract: A device for positioning during surgery, a heart valve prosthesis having a general annular configuration with an inside diameter that includes a handle and a introducer/rotator. The handle has a proximal end and a distal end. The introducer/rotator is attached to the distal end of the handle and has a length in operative relates to the inside diameter of the valve prosthesis. The introducer/rotator has a width that is less than the length, which facilitates intercostal insertion through a patient's ribs.

Abstract: A self-tapping dental implant includes a body which is substantially covered by a random surface roughening without adversely affecting the cutting edge and thus the amount of torque needed to thread the implant into bone tissue. During the surface treatment process, the cutting edges of the implant are covered with a removable shield. The shield may engage the implant through openings on either side of the cutting edge. The shield is adaptable for use with implants having multiple cutting edges since the shield may include a plurality of arms connected by a base. The shield may be snapped onto the distal end of the implant.
Abstract: An implantable orthopedic prosthesis is provided that includes a shell having a substantially concave inner surface defining a cavity and a substantially annular groove formed therein. The prosthesis further includes a polymeric insert that is positionable within the cavity of the shell, and that has a substantially convex outer surface and a circumferential protrusion projecting therefrom. The protrusion has a substantially trapezoidal cross-section wherein at least one of the sides of the trapezoid is substantially parallel to the axis of symmetry of the insert. The cross-section of the protrusion is substantially congruent to the cross-section of the groove of the shell, and the inner surface of the shell is substantially congruent with a corresponding portion of the outer surface of the insert when the insert is properly positioned within the cavity of the shell.
Abstract: An acetabular shell has a dome hole at the apex that is occluded at the proximal end thereof by a flexible diaphragm affixed to the shell wall of the acetabular shell. The flexible diaphragm moves between a first position spaced from an open proximal end of the dome hole to a second position engaging the open proximal end of the dome hole. Movement of the diaphragm is effected by seating the acetabular shell against the prepared bone of the acetabulum. The position of the diaphragm can be discerned through an open distal end of the dome hole either visually, or tacitly using a suitable feeler probe. The dome hole remains occluded against passage of debris therethrough regardless of the position of the flexible diaphragm.
Abstract: A heart valve holder is provided for implanting a prosthetic heart valve in either an inflow (mitral or tricuspid) or an outflow (aortic or pulmonary) implantation. The valve holder may be repeatedly sterilized for multiple implantations. The valve holder includes holding members to securely hold the valve, a valve-sizing member to allow the holder to hold valves of various sizes, an over rotation stop to prevent the holder from impinging upon the valve leaflets, alignment members to align the holding members for receiving a valve, and means to rotate the valve without damaging the valve leaflets.

Abstract: A fluidized bed apparatus which produces a pyrolitic carbon coating with improved wear and porosity characteristics of the coating by producing a more uniform flat temperature profile throughout a reaction chamber in the area where coating is taking place. The apparatus has heating coils surrounding a lower end of the reaction chamber placed immediately adjacent one another at tight spacing. This contrasts to previous apparatus wherein heating coils were spaced between 2 cm and 5 cm apart. The apparatus also has a multi-jet nozzle to control a flow of gases through the reaction chamber. The jets in the nozzle comprise passages which are oriented such that the length of the passages lie on a series of cones having common axes.
Abstract: A self-tapping implant for implantation into bone. The implant includes multiple flutes disposed around its tapping end. Each flute includes three separate concave cavities working in conjunction to tap the bone. A first cavity provides a primary cutting edge; a second cavity provides a repository for bone chips; and a third cavity provides both cutting and storing of bone.

Abstract: A self-tapping dental implant includes a body which is substantially covered by random surface roughening without adversely affecting the cutting edge and thus the amount of torque needed to thread the implant into bone tissue. During the surface treatment process, the cutting edges of the implant are shielded from the roughening treatment.
Abstract: A bone contouring tool for removing bony tissue surrounding an implanted dental implant and having an elongated shank with a blade and a pilot pin disposed at one end. The pilot pin extends downwardly from the blade and provides guidance during removal of the bony tissue.
Abstract: A packaging system for dental implants and method for implanting a packaged implant. The packaging system includes a vial and a vial cap forming an enclosure for an implant and driver cap. The driver cap is press fit to both the implant and vial cap and engages the implant to impart driving forces thereto. Once the implant is driven to into position, the driver cap serves as a conventional healing screw to cover the implant.
Abstract: An implant and a process for treating the same wherein the implant has a highly pure coating of crystalline hydroxylapatite (HA). The implant is initially coated with HA using a plasma spraying technique and is then subjected to a two stage process, including a hydrothermal treatment stage and a leaching stage. The resulting implant is highly crystalline, containing only a small percentage of amorphous calcium phosphate and essentially being free of calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide, and calcium carbonate.
Abstract: A spinal disk implant comprises a solid body having four faces arranged to define a right-rectangular solid body and two faces that define the ends of the solid body. The faces that define the right-rectangular body include two opposed side faces and two opposed transverse faces. A kit that may be used by a surgeon includes an implant and an implant delivery tool dimensioned to releasably hold the implant. The delivery tool preferably has an implant holder with a pair of flexible opposed arms extending from a base, separated so that the implant can fit between the arms. Optionally, the implant holder may have a breakable release band extending around the implant to hold it in place until a weak link in the release band is intentionally broken during implantation.
