Abstract: The present invention provides a method for modulating the complement cascade by depleting the plasma of the functional activity of complement proteins and thereby reducing or eliminating complement-mediated cell lysis. The invention provides a method for the therapeutic use of coat proteins and derivatives thereof from the Astroviradae family of viruses in the treatment of complement-mediated cell lysis and peptide mediators of inflammation. The invention provides a method for the therapeutic use of coat proteins and derivatives thereof from the Astroviradae family of viruses in the treatment of complement-mediated diseases. Methods are described herein where complement cascade, triggered by either the classical or alternative complement pathways, is prevented from effecting cell lysis and inflammation due to inhibition or depletion of one or more complement components in the serum following administration of astrovirus coat proteins or derivatives.
Abstract: A three-dimensional solid geometry modeling method is described that can move or modify any piece of solid or surface geometry, such as a protrusion or depression, when faces are changed in a way that is not obvious or predictable from the original data. The method involves a combination of local changes and a context-based process that uses simplification, detaching, modification, and reattaching algorithms. The method is invoked automatically when a modeling tool (such as Move or Pull) is used to move or modify a piece of geometry. During the movement or modification, the geometry reflects the changes dynamically as the user interacts with the modeling tool. When performing the modification, simplification of the faces and edges can be manually or automatically invoked.

Abstract: Methods and systems of gathering and caching WLAN packet information to improve position estimates of a WLAN positioning device. A device estimates the position of itself. The device includes a WLAN radio module for receiving WLAN signals transmitted by WLAN APs in range of said device, extraction logic for extracting information from said received WLAN signals to identify the WLAN APs, and logic to cooperate with a WLAN-based positioning system to estimate the position of the device based at least in part on the extracted information identifying the WLAN APs in the range of said device. The extraction logic includes logic for caching the extracted identities and logic for caching information indicating the time of reception of the signals transmitted by the corresponding WLAN AP. And, the logic to cooperate considers the cached time information when providing extracted and cached information to said WLAN-based positioning system.
Abstract: For executing an application (13) in a mobile device (1) comprising a camera (14), a visual background (2) is captured through the camera (14). A selected application (13) is associated with the visual background (2). The selected application (13) is executed in the mobile device (1). Determined are orientation parameters indicative of an orientation of the mobile device (1) relative to the visual background (2). Based on the orientation parameters, application-specific output signals are generated in the mobile device (1). Particularly, the captured visual background (2) is displayed on the mobile device (1) overlaid with visual objects based on the orientation parameters. Displaying the captured visual background with overlaid visual objects, selected and/or positioned dependent on the relative orientation of the mobile device (1), makes possible interactive augmented reality applications, e.g.
Abstract: A polycrystalline film is prepared by (a) providing a substrate having a thin film disposed thereon, said film capable of laser-induced melting, (b) generating a sequence of laser pulses having a fluence that is sufficient to melt the film throughout its thickness in an irradiated region, each pulse forming a line beam having a predetermined length and width, said width sufficient to prevent nucleation of solids in a portion of the thin film that is irradiated by the laser pulse, (c) irradiating a first region of the film with a first laser pulse to form a first molten zone, said first molten zone demonstrating a variation in width along its length to thereby define a maximum width (Wmax) and a minimum width (Wmin), wherein the first molten zone crystallizes upon cooling to form one or more laterally grown crystals, (d) laterally moving the film in the direction of lateral growth a distance that is greater than about one-half Wmax and less than Wmin; and (e) irradiating a second region of the film with a seco

Abstract: Methods and systems for providing redundancy in servicing packet data communications within wireless mobile data networks are disclosed. More particularly, the method and system provide a redundant Home Agent with the ability to assume the role of the primary Home Agent in the event of a primary Home Agent network, software, or other failure. The redundancy allows the Home Agent services to remain functional even in the event of a failure of one of the Home Agents in the redundant group, which may be composed of one or more Home Agents. The Home Agents can use a service redundancy protocol which is composed of messages that are sent between the redundant group of Home Agents. The messages allow the Home Agents to, for example, back up call session information, check on the status of one another, and share priority information.

Abstract: An interconnect structure for integrated circuits incorporates manganese silicate and manganese silicon nitride layers that completely surrounds copper wires in integrated circuits and methods for making the same are provided. The manganese silicate forms a barrier against copper diffusing out of the wires, thereby protecting the insulator from premature breakdown, and protecting transistors from degradation by copper. The manganese silicate and manganese silicon nitride also promote strong adhesion between copper and insulators, thus preserving the mechanical integrity of the devices during manufacture and use. The strong adhesion at the copper-manganese silicate and manganese silicon nitride interfaces also protect against failure by electromigration of the copper during use of the devices. The manganese-containing sheath also protects the copper from corrosion by oxygen or water from its surroundings.
