Abstract: A tong device for lifting various types and sizes of objects is disclosed. The tong lifting device includes tongs pivotally mounted on a slide rod which is extendable from a lift sleeve. Each tong has an attachment engaging end and an arm extending away from the attachment engaging end. Linkages are pivotally attached to the arms of the tongs, and are pivotally attached to a sliding lobe which travels along the length of the lift sleeve. The design of the lifting device provides a self-opening mode of operation and can be reconfigured in the field for optimum performance.
Abstract: Shaped charge liners are made of reactive materials formed by thermal spray techniques. The thermally sprayed reactive shaped charge materials have low porosity and high structural integrity. Upon detonation, the reactive materials of the shaped charge liner undergo an exothermic reaction that raises the temperature and the effectiveness of the liner.

Abstract: A disruptive media dispersal system for aircraft which absorbs and scatters directed energy weapon beams such as tracking lasers and high energy lasers (HELs) is disclosed. The system may include laser detectors, laser beam propagation disruptive media and a dispersal system. When attacked by a directed energy weapon such as a laser, the laser detector system or vehicle operator deploys the disruptive media. The disruptive media is released by a feeder and dispersal system into the air in the path of the tracking and/or HEL weapon. For example, the dispersal system may be located onboard the aircraft near the front of the fuselage.
Abstract: Quantum-cascade lasers are provided with an active section in which relaxation of carriers from a lower laser level is provided by three or more phonon-assisted transitions to levels within the active section whose energies are below the energy of the lower laser level. The gain region of the laser consists of alternating active and injector sections, with an injection barrier inserted between each injector section and the adjacent active section, and an exit barrier inserted between each active section and the adjacent injector section. The active section comprises a sufficient number of quantum wells separated by quantum barriers to produce the desired energy-level structure consisting of an upper laser level, a lower laser level, and at least three levels that have lower energies than the lower laser level, with the separation of adjacent energy levels below and including the lower laser level that are at least equal to the energy of the quantum well material's longitudinal optical phonon.

Abstract: An apparatus comprises a distributed array of antenna elements for receiving a radio frequency signal on a satellite communications link, wherein the radio frequency signal includes a known preamble; a plurality of mixers for translating the radio frequency signal to a plurality of baseband signals having in-phase and quadrature components; a processor for applying weights to the baseband signals, wherein the weights are found adaptively in response to the preamble in combination with decision-directed feedback when the preamble is not present; and a receiver for processing the weighted baseband signals. A pre-processor can be used to create sub-arrays of the antenna elements using maximal-ratio weighting. A method performed by the apparatus is also provided.
Abstract: A cipher engine performs cipher processing (encrypting/decrypting) on logical data streams in a physical data stream in a storage device. As the physical data stream changes from a first logical data stream to a second logical data stream, and the cipher engine switches from cipher processing the first logical data stream to the second logical data stream, cipher information of the first logical data stream is stored in a cipher state memory, cipher information of the second logical data stream is retrieved from the cipher state memory, and the cipher engine resumes cipher processing the second logical data stream using the cipher information of the second logical data stream. Advantageously, a virtually unlimited number of logical data streams is supported and duplicate cipher hardware is avoided.

Abstract: A magnetic recording system is disclosed in which the magnetization dynamics of the write head and recording medium are highly damped. The system may comprise a perpendicular recording head having a write pole, and a recording medium including a hard magnetic recording layer and a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL). The increased magnetic damping in the write pole and SUL suppresses precessional motion of the respective magnetizations, leading to a reduction in transition jitter caused by spurious head field fluctuations. The damping may be increased by providing films or multilayer structures that are doped with rare earth or transition metal elements. Exchange coupled laminates of doped and undoped layers may optimize both the effective damping and write field in the recording system.

Abstract: Composite materials comprising ferroelastic ceramic particulates dispersed in a metal matrix are capable of vibration damping. When the ferroelastic ceramic particulates are subjected to stress, such as the cyclic stress experienced during vibration of the material, internal stresses in the ceramic cause the material to deform via twinning, domain rotation or domain motion thereby dissipating the vibrational energy. The ferroelastic ceramic particulates may also act as reinforcements to improve the mechanical properties of the composites. The composite materials may be used in various structural components in vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, buildings and tools.
