  • Patent number: 5819693
Abstract: A method wherein a number of cylinders (2, 3; 1, 4) are grouped on a same exhaust gas manifold (8, 10) such that the pressure in the exhaust pipe (1e . . . 4e) undergoes time-dependent fluctuations of substantial amplitudes, and the exhaust valve (6) of a cylinder (1) is opened during induction or filling thereof (i.e. adjacent to the bottom dead center) so that, in a given engine speed range, a phase (28) of low instantaneous exhaust pressure prevailing in the exhaust pipe enables the inlet pipe (1a)/cylinder (1)/exhaust pipe (1e) to be scavenged while the inlet valve (5) and the exhaust valve (6) are simultaneously open. The phase (29) of high instantaneous exhaust pressure, caused by another cylinder, after the inlet valve (5) has closed and while the exhaust valve (6) is still open, is used for post-charging the cylinder (1) with air (A) previously stored in the exhaust pipe (1e).

  • Patent number: 5811588
Abstract: Process for the preparation of 3-phenylpropanal in which cinnamaldehyde is hydrogenated with the aid of a Pd-containing catalyst in the presence of a small amount of water. A high yield and a high selectivity are obtained in a commercially attractive process. The reaction mixture obtained can without intermediate further processing be subjected to an oxidation in which the cinnamaldehyde is oxidized to 3-phenylpropionic acid with a high degree of conversion and a high selectivity. The combination of the two process steps constitutes a simple, commercially attractive process for the preparation of 3-phenylpropionic acid using cinnamaldehyde as a starting material. The resulting 3-phenyl-propionic acid product may serve as an intermediate reagent in the synthesis of anti-viral pharmaceuticals, particularly HIV protease inhibitors.

  • Patent number: 5804296
Abstract: A composition comprises a cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester, and an anatase-type titanium oxide having (1) a specific surface area of not less than 30 m.sup.2 /g, (2) a primary particle size of 0.001 to 0.07 .mu.m, or (3) a specific surface area of not less than 30 m.sup.2 /g and a primary particle size of 0.001 to 0.07 .mu.m. For improving the photodegradability and the dispersibility, the surface of the titanium oxide may be treated with a phosphoric acid salt or other phosphorus compound, a polyhydric alcohol, an amino acid or others. Use of a low-substituted cellulose ester with an average substitution degree not exceeding 2.15 insures high biodegradability. The composition may further contain a plasticizer and/or an aliphatic polyester, a biodegradation accelerator (e.g. organic acids or esters thereof). The degradable cellulose ester composition is highly photodegradable and moldable and hence useful for the manufacture of various articles.

  • Patent number: 5779945
Abstract: A process for producing granules from a liquid composition which includes the steps of applying the liquid composition onto solid particles of the same composition circulating in the granulation zone of a granulator, thereby causing particles to grow, discharging a stream of grown particles from the granulation zone, cooling this stream in a cooler, and dividing the stream exiting the cooler, in a size-sorting apparatus, into three streams of grown particles based on size. The stream of desired-sized particles is withdrawn for future use or processing, the stream of undersized particles is returned to the granulation zone and the stream of oversized particles is sent to a size-reducing apparatus for crushing, with the resulting crushed particles recycled back to the cooler located downstream of the granulator and upstream of the size-sorting apparatus.
