  • Patent number: 5956784
Abstract: A hydro-therapy spa jet including an inlet connection, a first nozzle to accelerate a water stream from the inlet connection, an air inlet, a second nozzle drawing air from the air inlet to aerate the accelerated water stream, and a third nozzle to slow and directionally adjust the aerated water stream. The third nozzle includes an inlet, a chamber, and an orifice, where the aerated water stream passes into the inlet, through the chamber, and out the orifice. The inlet has a conical inner surface that contracts in a downstream direction. The inlet also includes a spherical outer surface, which is received in a conforming spherical inner surface within the jet. The chamber is conical in shape, expanding in the downstream direction to reduce the water's speed as it passes through the chamber. The orifice defines a passage having a cross-sectional area that is constant in the downstream direction.

  • Patent number: 5954575
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for automated handling of a carcass and parts separated therefrom in mechanically assisted cutting and boning. In mechanically assisted cutting and boning, a hook or similar must be applied manually into the part to be separated. According to the present invention, the hook application is located so as not to delay the operator performing the cutting and the boning. The arrangement comprises a conveyor line (5) for transport of the carcasses suspended from a first hook (2), from a preparatory work station to a work station for separation of a part (3) from the carcass. A second hook (4) is applied into said part (3) of the carcass at the preparatory work station and is transported to the work station together with the carcass (1).

  • Patent number: 5952027
Abstract: A method of producing a crisp surface and imparting a uniform golden-brown color to a precooked whole muscle meat product by coating at least a portion of the surface of a precooked whole muscle meat product with a browning liquid pyrolysis product. The coated surface is then exposed to an energy source that selectively heats the coated surface of the whole muscle meat product at a temperature and for a time sufficient to develop a golden-brown color on the exposed surface, without substantially shrinking the precooked whole muscle meat product.

  • Patent number: 5945147
Abstract: A method of packaging perishable foods wherein the perishable food product is packed in a plurality of cartons and the cartons are stacked on a pallet for storage and/or transportation, including placing a sheet of material on a pallet to provide a bottom sheet, with the bottom sheet overhanging the sides of the pallet, stacking a plurality of cartons on the bottom sheet on the pallet to form a carton stack, covering the top and sides of the carton stack with a bag of a gas permeable material, the bag having a closed top and an open bottom with a lower edge, sealing the edges of the bottom sheet to the lower edge of the bag, introducing a quantity of nitrogen gas through an opening into the interior of the bag without withdrawing any gas from the bag, and sealing the opening to retain the nitrogen within the bag, and apparatus for packaging such perishable products. Preferably the gas permeable material is a selective permeable material which is more permeable to oxygen than to nitrogen.

  • Patent number: 5944928
Abstract: A method of fabrication with the formation of a receiving panel which defines a plurality of spaced-apart parallel plows extending longitudinally. The panel has an open surface along which the plows are exposed and an opposing surface from which the plows are not accessible. The plows may be formed by adhering substrates to a separate veneer layer to define the plows between the substrates. It is preferable that the veneer layer be formed of wood, but the substrates can be formed of a less expensive material, such as composite material. Once the receiving panel has been fabricated, it is bowed to form an arc about an axis parallel to the plows. This can be done by passing the panel, carried by a belt, between two rollers that are configured to define between them a profile corresponding to the arc of the panel. While the panel is in this bowed condition, strips, made of wood, are inserted in the plows. The strips can be formed by opposing laminations that are not adhered to each other.

  • Patent number: 5942157
Abstract: A new photopolymerizable material allows single-step, fast recording of volume holograms with properties that can be electrically controlled. Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) in accordance with the invention preferably comprise a homogeneous mixture of a nematic liquid crystal and a multifunctional pentaacrylate monomer, in combination with photoinitiator, coinitiator and cross-linking agent. Optionally, a surfactant such as octanoic acid may also be added. The PDLC material is exposed to coherent light to produce an interference pattern inside the material. Photopolymerization of the new PDLC material produces a hologram of clearly separated liquid crystal domains and cured polymer domains. Volume transmission gratings made with the new PDLC material can be electrically switched between nearly 100% diffraction efficiency and nearly 0% diffraction efficiency. By increasing the frequency of the switching voltage, switching voltages in the range of 50 Vrms can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 5942986
Abstract: A critical event notification system continuously monitors patient statistics and lab data to detect critical events, and automatically pages a responsible physician or physicians, each having an alphanumeric pager. In particular, a computer is used to continually access real-time data and multiple hospital databases which are periodically updated. These databases include patient chart databases, databases corresponding to patient history and databases maintained by various labs. The computer, preferably a clinical information system, is automatically provided with certain data, or periodically extracts it from other, relational databases. The computer automatically reviews this data, makes the critical event determination, and formulates an alphanumeric message that is informative as to the patient's condition and the reasons why a critical event was detected.

  • Patent number: 5942390
Abstract: A novel, differential association between allele 2 of the variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism at intron 2 of the human IL-1 receptor antagonist gene and ulcerative colitis in humans of Jewish ancestry has been discovered. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided methods of screening for ulcerative colitis in human subjects of Jewish ancestry comprising detecting the presence or absence of nucleic acid of the subject encoding allele 2 of the variable number of tandem repeats polymorphism at intron 2 of the human IL-1 receptor antagonist gene, wherein the presence of nucleic acid encoding allele 2 is indicative of ulcerative colitis. Kits useful for screening for ulcerative colitis in human subjects of Jewish ancestry are also provided.

  • Patent number: 5920278
Abstract: A broadband transmitter element, located at a remote object, transmits a broadband signal at a prescribed transmission time. A broadband receiver element, located at a base platform spaced from the remote object, receives electromagnetic radiation during a reception search window. The broadband receiver element stores information characterizing the broadband signal. A synchronizer synchronizes the broadband transmitter element with the broadband receiver element for timing the transmission and reception. A processing device derives an estimated time of flight for the broadband signal to travel from the remote object to the base platform, and a correlation detector, located at the base platform, identifies the remote object and the arrival time of the broadband signal by correlating the stored information with signals received during the reception search window.

  • Patent number: 5906856
Abstract: A liquid butter replacement exhibits a pleasant fat-like mouth feel despite a very low or no fat content, good color, good flavor, and a degree of fat-like melt without causing toast or other similar substrate to which the product is applied to become soggy due to moisture release. A flowable fat mimetic is prepared from an aqueous solution comprising a cross-linkable carbohydrate gelling composition (preferably pectin) and at least one gelling agent (preferably a calcium salt) that together form a heat-stable inner gelled phase which is agitated to produce gel particles that provide an organoleptic sensation similar to fat. The weight of the fat mimetic is at least about 75% of the weight of the butter substitute. The flowable fat mimetic is then combined with an second, continuous outer phase containing an unhydrated heat-reversible or heat-thinning, water-soluble gelling agent, and preferably salt and milk or milk solids.
