Abstract: Rubber concentrates for use in reinforcing acrylonitrile and styrene-containing polymers are prepared by graft polymerizing an acrylonitrile-styrene polymer on a rubber latex wherein a portion of the polymer is chemically combined with the rubber and a portion of the acrylonitrile-styrene polymer is not chemically combined. The uncombined or matrix polymer is of relatively low molecular weight.
Abstract: Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins are prepared by the mass or mass-suspension process employing a tertiary-butyl peroxy initiator having a 10-hour half-life between about 50.degree. and 95.degree. C. wherein initial polymerization of up to about 10 weight percent solids is conducted under plug flow conditions. From about 5 to 10 percent conversion to about 40 percent conversion is polymerized with agitation. The remaining polymerization is done with or without agitation. Improved impact resistance is obtained.
Abstract: In a process for the admixture of radio-active waste with an encapsulating resin in a container which will accompany the waste to a disposal site, the improvement which comprises providing a generally annular deflectable foil at an upper open end of the container to minimize contamination by splashing.
Abstract: Composite foam panels are prepared from expanded thermoplastic particles of low density by generally encapsulating the particles in a phenolic foam matrix and providing a particulate expanded mineral substance such as perlite disposed generally adjacent the major surfaces of the panel.
Abstract: A crosslinked vinylidene chloride polymer microgel powder is recovered from a latex and dispersed with moderate shear in a nonsolvent for vinylidene chloride polymers, such as a polyol used in the preparation of polyurethane materials. A dispersion of the powder and a polyol is eminently suited for use in the preparation of polyurethane foams to impart enhanced flame-retardancy and load-bearing properties thereto.

Abstract: Extruded synthetic resinous thermoplastic foams of increased cell size are obtained when using volatile fluid blowing agents by incorporating a cell-size enlarging agent into the extruded composition, the cell-size enlarging agent being liquid at the foaming temperature and generally soluble in the heat-plastified foamable mixture.
Abstract: Masonry buildings for low temperature applications such as freezers and the like are insulated by applying the insulation on the exterior and providing an external vapor barrier.
Abstract: Rubber-reinforced alkenyl aromatic resinous polymers are prepared by polymerizing an alkenyl aromatic monomer such as styrene containing a reinforcing rubber until phase inversion occurs and subsequently adding an additional solution containing a reinforcing polymer such as rubber and containing polymerization.
Abstract: A resin composition having high impact resistance, improved release property and reduced flammability is obtained by mixing a polymer containing a major amount of a monovinyl aromatic, monomer, a block copolymer consisting essentially of styrene and butadiene, an amorphous alpha-olefin polymer, a halide containing flame retardant compound, and an antimony compound.
Abstract: In the preparation of impact-resistant alkenyl aromatic resinous polymers such as impact polystyrene containing halogenated monomer such as a brominated methacrylate, improved physical properties are obtained if the brominated monomer is added after phase inversion of the rubber and at a rate sufficiently slow as to maintain the identity of the rubber particles.
Abstract: A thermoplastic lined plug valve is prepared using a plug having a nonlocking taper and a stem at the small end of the plug. The plug is seated initially by forcing the plug into the plug cavity, raising the temperature of the plug valve above the service temperature of the valve body lining until the valve body lining conforms to the valve plug. The valve is then cooled to a temperature below the service temperature of the body lining.
Abstract: A readily adjustable tubing extrusion die has a laterally movable die ring which is clamped to the die body and slideable by means of positive positioning devices.
Abstract: Highly desirable multifunctional lithium containing initiators are prepared by reacting a compound such as an organo lithium with an organic compound containing at least two 1,1-diphenylethylene groups. Such initiators can be prepared in the absence of polar solvents and are very desirable for the polymerization of dienes such as butadiene to a desirable 1,4 configuration. Several di-lithium compounds have been employed to initiate polymerization of various unsaturated organic monomers.

Abstract: Polytetrafluoroethylene tubes are prepared by isostatic molding of polytetrafluoroethylene powder over a cylindrical mandral at a temperature below about 19.degree. C. The compacted preform and mandrel are then warmed to a temperature above about 19.degree. C. and the preform removed from the mandrel. Sticking of the preform to the mandrel is avoided.
Abstract: This invention is directed to cement additives consisting essentially of (1) a styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile interpolymer latex, (2) a nonionic surfactant, (3) an anionic surfactant, and (4) a polyorganosiloxane foam depressant, which additives provide portland cement compositions having excellent strength properties.
