  • Patent number: 4761959
Abstract: A fuel nozzle for injecting atomized fuel into an air stream at an adjustable angle with respect to its longitudinal axis is described incorporating a support flange, a fuel supply tube, a nozzle tip body at the end of the fuel supply tube and a sheath between the support flange and the nozzle tip body for directing air to the nozzle tip body. A second sheath enclosing the first sheath is provided wherein each has a slot opening which may be positioned with respect to the support flange for admitting air into and where the size of the opening may be controlled by rotating the outer sheath with respect to the inner sheath to provide an adjustable overlap of the slot openings. The invention overcomes the problem of injecting fuel into the combustor of a jet engine at an angle which may be adjustable over a predetermined range to enhance combustion of the fuel.

  • Patent number: 4729083
Abstract: A d.c. power supply for computer logic circuits which is sensitive to brief interruptions in a.c. source power. The power supply includes an input transformer providing first and second a.c. voltages which are rectified to first and second d.c. voltage, the second d.c. voltage being of greater magnitude than the first d.c. voltage. A linear voltage regulator receives the first d.c. voltage as normal input and provides a third d.c. voltage of lesser magnitude than the first d.c. voltage. A storage capacitor is charged by the second d.c. voltage. A differential amplifier detects an interruption in source power and causes the storage capacitor to be connected to the input of the regulator whereby the regulator output is maintained during a brief interruption in source power by the discharge current of the storage capacitor.

  • Patent number: 4679311
Abstract: A method of fabricating a self-aligned field-effect transistor having a T-shaped gate electrode and a sub-micron gate length. In the method of the present invention, a multi-layer gate structure is formed on an active region formed in a semiconductor substrate. A first aluminum layer of the gate structure, which is adjacent to the active region, is selectively etched to form a T-shaped gate electrode. The etching provides the first layer of the gate electrode with a gate length of less than 0.75 microns, and the T-shaped gate electrode is used as a shadow-mask to deposit self-aligned source and drain electrodes.

  • Patent number: 4672567
Abstract: A set containing an odd number N of successive raw range data samples from precision distance measuring equipment is established. The set is arranged in ascending order of sample magnitude. The median member of the ordered set, i.e. the (N-1/2+1 member, is selected for processing in an alpha-beta type digital filter. The filter output is compensated for the delay introduced by using the median member of the set as the input to the alpha-beta filter. The compensated filter output is utilized as the distance input signal to a display or aircraft flight control system.

  • Patent number: 4600924
Abstract: A digital automatic frequency control for a pulse-type radar receiver having a voltage controlled local oscillator. A first digital number is generated and converted to a first analog voltage for coarse control of the local oscillator frequency. The first digital number is varied during the time output from the radar transmitter is present at the receiver mixer. The first digital number is varied causing sweep of the local oscillator frequency. When the difference frequency output from the mixer is at a value to cause output from the receiver intermediate frequency amplifier of a predetermined level, variation of the first digital number is halted, providing a coarsely tuned local oscillator frequency. A second digital number is then generated, converted to a second analog voltage which is combined with the first analog voltage. The second digital number is varied to cause the local oscillator frequency to be sidestepped above and below the coarsely tuned frequency.

  • Patent number: 4563158
Abstract: A fuel ignition plug (10) includes an outer electrode (12) defined by a conductive shell which surrounds a central electrode (28) and an insulator body (22) between the central electrode (28) and outer electrode (12). Fused glass powder seals (40,42) between the shell and the insulator body (22), and between the insulator body (22) and the central electrode (28), prevent combustion gasses from passing through the interior of the device (10). The device (10) is assembled by holding the electrodes (12,28) and insulator body (22) in fixed, concentric relationship with each other while the seals (40,42) are heated and extruded into sealing position against a shoulder (38,52) of the insulator body (22). The seals (40,42) are extruded into sealing position by applying force to push rings (44,46) which are respectively sleeved over the insulator body (22) and central electrode (28) and bear against the seals (40,42).

  • Patent number: 4455742
Abstract: A method is described for positioning the variable threshold region of a memory transistor by a predetermined distance from the drain and source regions. The method includes providing openings in the dielectric material over the substrate at the same time or in one mask step for the variable threshold region and the drain and source regions. A mask is positioned over the variable threshold region opening at times the drain and source regions are formed. The variable threshold region is subsequently formed by growing thin oxide and a layer of nitride thereover. Both sides of the variable threshold region have a fixed threshold region between the respective drain and source which is controlled by a common gate electrode. The invention overcomes the problem of providing additional space for alignment tolerances between the variable threshold region and the drain and source regions.

  • Patent number: 4449127
Abstract: A method and apparatus is described for determining the presence of multipath conditions when tracking a target with a radar wherein the radar includes apparatus for transmitting signals and receiving target reflected signals along two boresight reference lines angularly displaced less than one beamwidth and means for processing the target reflected signals along both boresight reference lines to provide an elevation estimate of the target by target reflected signals along both boresight reference lines and to derive the quadrature component, if any, along both boresight reference line axes. A difference in target elevation derived from target reflected signals along both boresight reference lines or the presence of a quadrature component along one or both boresight reference lines is used to determine the presence of multipath conditions and to provide signals to select one of the elevation signals for tracking or to provide an estimate of target position.

  • Patent number: 4447873
Abstract: Input-output buffers interface a data terminal, such as a digital signal processor adapted to perform complex arithmetic functions on vectors of data words, with a storage controller. The input buffer interfaces the storage controller with the data terminal and generates control signals indicating when it is in condition to receive a vector of data words from the storage controller, whereon the storage controller transfers a vector of data to the input buffer; and, further, generates signals indicating when it contains a complete vector of data at which time the input buffer will transfer the vector of data contained therein to the data terminal.

  • Patent number: 4385834
Abstract: Boresighting of an outgoing first laser beam axis to an imaging sensor reference axis is described by aligning a second laser beam axis, which is in fixed relation to the first laser beam axis, to an electromagnetic source reference beam axis and detecting the angular displacement between the second laser beam and the reference beam axes. The sensor reference axis is in fixed relationship to the reference beam axis. Error signals are generated by the detector which are proportional to the angular displacement and are utilized to correct the angular displacement to align the second laser beam and the reference beam axes. When the first laser beam is boresighted to the sensor reference axis, the image of the reference beam source in the sensor display will represent the target object to which the outgoing first laser beam is directed.
