    Abstract: A tension shadow mask CRT front assembly includes a flat strip shadow mask having a first wire and a second wire in contact with the strips of the mask on opposite sides of the mask for damping strip vibration. The two wires may be spaced apart on opposite sides of the mask, or lie directly opposite. If the wires are directly opposite, they may be formed from a single wire welded into a loop. The wires are held in tension by a spring attached to, and extending from, the inner surface of the faceplate.

    Abstract: An improved front assembly for a color cathode ray tube having a tension foil shadow mask is disclosed. The faceplate of the tube has on its inner surface a centrally disposed phosphor target surrounded by a peripheral sealing area adapted to mate with a funnel. A separate metal faceplate frame is secured to the inner surface of the faceplate between the sealing area and the target. The separate metal frame according to the invention supports a welded-on tension foil shadow mask a predetermined distance from the inner surface of the faceplate. The separate faceplate-mounted metal frame may have according to the invention a plurality of slurry-passing structures contiguous to the inner surface of the faceplate for passing any surplusage of slurry during the radial-flow slurry-deposition process used in screening the faceplate. Various configurative embodiments of the faceplate-mounted metal frame according to the invention are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A front assembly for a color cathode ray tube is disclosed. The tube includes a faceplate having on its inner surface a centrally disposed phosphor screen. A shadow mask support structure is resting on and secured to the inner surface of the faceplate on opposed sides of the screen. A foil shadow mask is secured to the structure under high inward tension. The shadow mask support structure according to the invention is characterized by having at least one foot resting on the inner surface for bracing and stabilizing the structure against upset from the high tension of the mask. Other embodiments of the invention are shown in which one or more of the feet have a plurality of open-ended or closed-ended openings therein for facilitating passage of the cement used for attaching the support structure to the inner surface of the faceplate. The openings according to the invention present cement-contactible edges for enhancing the securement of the support structure.

    Abstract: A faceplate assembly is disclosed for a color cathode ray tube comprising a glass faceplate having on its inner surface a centrally disposed phosphor screen. A foil shadow mask is mounted in tension on a mask support structure which is located on opposed sides of the screen. The mask support structure physically penetrates the faceplate for permanent, cementless anchoring of the structure to the faceplate. The embedment of the mask support structure is of such depth as to cause the structure to resist tensile forces created by the mask. Also disclosed is a process for securing a support structure for a tensed foil shadow mask to a glass faceplate.

    Abstract: In-process articles of manufacture are disclosed for the manufacture of a high-resolution color cathode ray tube having a tensed foil shadow mask. A first article-in-process comprises a faceplate with a target area for receiving at least one pattern of phosphor deposits. The faceplate has attached at preselected, widely spaced locations on the sides thereof a plurality of discrete, detachable first indexing elements. An article-in-process comprises a shadow mask support assembly having a frame ultimately constituting a part of the tube envelope; the frame supports the shadow mask in precise adjacency to the target area. The frame has attached on the sides thereof a like plurality of discrete, detachable second indexing elements which are in facing adjacency to the first indexing elements on the faceplate when the faceplate and frame are mated. Temporary attachment of the indexing elements is by means of a thermally degradable cement.

A shadow mask support assembly includes a glass frame sealed to and constituting an integral part of the tube envelope for supporting a shadow mask in precise spaced adjacency to the target area. The frame has an electrically conductive frame coating on at least a portion thereof. An electrically conductive foil shadow mask adapted to be charged with a high voltage is mounted in tension on the frame in electrical contact with a conductive frame coating. Conductive means which may comprise spring means is in contact with the mask or the conductive frame coating and the metallic film or a conductive extension thereof for conducting high voltage on the mask to the metallic film.

    Abstract: A front assembly system for a tension mask color cathode ray tube is disclosed wherein a novel high-voltage conduit is formed between the funnel coating of the tube and the mask to a shadow-mask supporting frame. Also, a magnetic shielding combination is formed comprising an internal magnetic shield and the frame. The magnetic shield effectively extends from the inner surface of the faceplate through the frame and into the funnel a predetermined distance. The frame multi-functionally serves to mechanically support the mask, the shield and the interconnecting means to electrically interconnect the conductive funnel coating, the conductive screen and the mask, and to magnetically interconnect the shield and the mask. The magnetic shielding combination according to the invention is formed by the frame and the shield to enhance the shielding of the electron beams from stray magnetic flux transverse to the tube axis.

    Abstract: An electron gun system according to the invention comprises means including cathode means for developing an electron beam. Main focus lens means, which has a plurality of electrode means situated on a common axis, provide for receiving the electron beam and forming a focused electron beam spot at the screen of the tube. Means are provided for developing and applying to the electrode means potentials effective to form one or more focusing field components between the electrode means. The lens means is so structured and arranged as to cause to be formed between adjacent electrode means at least one focusing field component which is asymmetrical and effective to significantly divert a passed beam from a straight-line path through a predetermined angle. A first of the plurality of electrode means comprises focus electrode means adapted to receive focus voltages for establishing the focal distance of the beams.

    Abstract: An electron gun system providing beam convergence is disclosed for use in a color CRT display system. Means including cathode means develop three electron beams, two of which are off-axis with respect to a center axis of the gun. A plurality of electrodes means provide shaping and focusing, and assisting in the converging of the beams at the tube screen. Means are provided for developing and applying to the electrode means a pattern of potentials which form field components in the gaps therebetween; at least one of the electrode means receives a varying dynamic focusing voltage for dynamically focusing the beams as they are deflected across the screen. At least selected ones of the plurality of electrodes means for the off-axis beams are so structured and arranged as to cause a plurality of the field components to be asymmetric and effective to converge the off-axis beams. The strengths of the asymmetric field components vary in response to changes in the dynamic focus voltage.

The indexing means according to the invention are characterized by the grooves each having a subtended angle in the range of 34 to 75 degrees, and preferably, 53 degrees.     Abstract: A front assembly for a color cathode tube is disclosed. The tube faceplate has on its inner surface a centrally disposed screen area for receiving process materials during the spin-application process. The front assembly has a shadow mask support structure secured to the inner surface of the faceplate on opposed sides of the screen area. The structure has a first surface for receiving and securing a foil shadow mask, and a second surface inclined from the first surface to the screen area effective to conduct from the screen area any excess of coating material applied during the spin-application process. As a result, discontinuities in phosphor application visible to the viewer, and non-adherence of phosphor resulting in wash-off and flake-off, are avoided. An embodiment is also shown in which electrical connection is made between a mask support structure and a screen.

    Abstract: A glass faceplate for use in a color cathode ray tube has a target area with a pattern of phosphor deposits circumscribed by a sealing area, and a frame supporting a shadow mask with a sealing area geometrically matching the sealing area of the faceplate. Three indexing means are spaced apart along the sealing areas for indexing the faceplate in relation to the frame, providing a gap of predetermined width, and leaving at least one corner of the faceplate unsupported. Shims means having shimming dimension equivalent to or slightly less than the predetermined gap width is located in the gap at the unsupported corner, whereby the unsupported corner is supported by the shim means such that the predetermined gap width is maintained during tube fabrication even at the unsupported corner. A method for assembling a color cathode ray tube which utilizes the shimming means according to the invention is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A novel color selection electrode assembly is utilized in screening a pattern of phosphor areas upon the faceplate of a color cathode ray tube. Index bosses, cooperable with the faceplate registration affording means, are detachably secured to the mount. A planar metal foil having a predetermined pattern of apertures and formed of a material having a temperature coefficient of expansion not greater than that of the mount is secured to the mount.
