  • Patent number: 6612407
Abstract: A method of attaching a brake cable assembly onto a drum brake assembly is disclosed for a new form of brake cable having a cable inner portion with an end fitting and a cable outer portion comprising a cable sheath and a guide. The cable guide is inserted through a hole in a backplate of the brake assembly and positioned such that an open end of the guide is presented adjacent an automatic latching device on a parking brake lever of the brake assembly. The cable inner is then advanced through the cable outer such that the end fitting is guided towards, and engages the automatic latching device. The cable outer and backplate may be provided with corresponding orientation features which are aligned to ensure the correct presentation of the open end of the guide adjacent the latching device during assembly. These orientation features may take the form of interengaging formations on the backplate and cable outer. The guide may include a spring which acts as a return spring for the parking brake lever.

  • Patent number: 6464046
Abstract: A parking brake actuating mechanism in which a first lever (11) acts on a first brake shoe web (13) and a second lever (15) pivoted on the first lever (11) acts on a second brake shoe web (17). The first lever (11) includes an actuating cable abutment formation (31′) against which an actuating cable nipple (28) on the free end of a cable (25) is drawn to move the first lever to increase the effective length of the mechanism and hence move the associated brake shoes. The first lever (11) is of hollow form defining a guide passage (29) which directs the free end of the cable from an aperture (24) in the backplate (23) of the associated brake to a location adjacent the abutment formation (31′) to enable the nipple (28) to be engaged with the formation (31′). A portion (11′) of the first lever outside the guide passage (29) may guide the cable from the end of the passage towards the abutment formation (31′).

  • Patent number: 6460676
Abstract: A constant lift device for a friction clutch s comprises a lever (80) pivotally connected to the pressure plate (13) of the clutch. An abutment (82) on the lever contacts the clutch cover (21) during disengagement to limit the lift of the pressure plate (13). The pivotal position of the lever (80) relative to the pressure plate is controlled to maintain the lift of the pressure plate (13) substantially constant over the life of the clutch. The means for controlling the pivotal position of the lever (80) includes a pin (51) mounted for sliding movement relative to the pressure plate (13). The pin (51) contacts the lever and is inhibited from sliding movement towards the flywheel to prevent pivotal movement of the lever towards the flywheel but is able to slide in a direction away from the flywheel as the clutch wears to adjust the angular position of the lever. Due to the lever ratio the pin (51) slides by an amount which is less than the amount of wear.

  • Patent number: 6408717
Abstract: A twin mass flywheel (10) in which first (11) and second (12) flywheel masses can rotate relative to each other about an axis (C) under the control of one or more connection means (50, 31, 41) whose center of gravity moves radially with respect to the rotation axis as the flywheel masses rotate relative to each other. The centripetal loads acting on the connection means (50, 31, 41) as the twin mass flywheel rotates, tend to bias the first and second flywheel masses towards a pre-determined relative rotational position to provide speed sensitive damping of the relative rotation. The connection means may take the form of a mass (50) which moves along a first track (31) associated with the first flywheel mass (11) and a torque transmitting connection acting between the mass (50) and the second flywheel mass (12) in the form of a second track (41) also followed by the mass (50). Numerous other forms of connection means are also disclosed some of which us links (570) in place of one of the tracks.

  • Patent number: 6405845
Abstract: A hydraulic damper (10) for damping vibrations in the fluid flow path between a hydraulic pressure source and an associated hydraulic consumer comprises a cylinder (11) having a bore (19). A piston (12) is sidably received in the bore and has a sealing means (30) in contact with the bore to define on one side of the sealing means a first chamber (13) for connection with the hydraulic pressure source and on the other side of the sealing means a second chamber (14) for connection with the associated hydraulic consumer. The cylinder has a sealing zone (20) which in a first operative state of the damper is contacted by the sealing means. The piston (12) is capable in response to an increase in hydraulic pressure in the first chamber (13) of moving in the bore to reduce the volume of the second chamber (14) such that eventually the sealing means (30) moves out of the sealing zone to open fluid flow means (22) through which hydraulic fluid can flow from the first chamber to the second chamber.

  • Patent number: 6397984
Abstract: In a clearance compensator, a rod (12) is fixed to one of the shoes of the brake and is slidable in an intermediate element (13) threadably engaged in another rod (11) secured to the other shoe. A heat-sensitive bi-metallic strip (18) projects from a leaf spring (14) operable to urge the rod (12) away from the intermediate element (13). The bi-metallic strip (18) is orientated substantially tangentially of a ratchet wheel (17) fixed to the intermediate element (13); at its free end, the bi-metallic strip (18) has a stop element (18a) for engaging the ratchet wheel (17). At temperatures above a predetermined value, the strip (18) assumes a heat-induced deflected condition in which the stop element (18a) is disengaged from the wheel (17).

  • Patent number: 6394908
Abstract: A torsional vibration damper comprising an input member for connection with a vehicle engine and an output member for connection with a vehicle transmission, the members being mounted for limited relative rotation about a common axis against a damping means comprising one or more circumferentially acting compression springs. Each spring acts between a first abutment formed as an integral part of the input member and a second abutment formed as an integral part of the output member. The damper may also include one or more elastomeric springs or blocks which are subjected to compression in end zones of the relative rotation of the input and output members. Other inventive features of the damper include support members for avoiding fouling of the elastomeric springs or blocks by the compression springs and the use of cantilevered pivot pins for the connection of bob-weight connecting linkages connected between the input and output members.
