Abstract: A system to intelligently link a computer user to enormous databases of multi-media information. The system provides an automated facility to determine the value of information based on each user's subjective preferences. An execution is created by comparing these preferences with prior characterizations of information objects. Once the comparisons are made, an ordered list is compiled. The list provides a set of data sources starting with the most relevant and ending with the least relevant. By selecting and reviewing only the most significant references, the probability of locating a pertinent reference is increased dramatically while increasing the effectiveness of time spent reviewing results.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for the modification of the timing of one of a plurality of PEL clocks included within an electrophotographic device. A first indicator is generated which is associated with a first position on a print receiving material. A second indicator is generated which is associated with a second position on the print receiving material. A first enable signal is generated for initiating a first scan. The first scan is executed utilizing a first laser beam synchronized by a first PEL clock. A second enable signal is generated for initiating a second scan. The second scan is executed utilizing a second laser beam synchronized by a second PEL clock. The first and second scans are executed approximately concurrently. An offset of the second position from the first position is determined. The timing of a second PEL clock is modified by adjusting the second enable signal utilizing the offset so that the first and second positions are approximately aligned.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for permitting selected command sequences to be processed by a modem during data transfer operations. A preselected escape character is designated and inserted into a data stream to be applied to a modem in order to identify a selected command sequence which follows. A termination character is inserted into the data stream following the selected command sequence. Upon detection of the preselected escape character, the selected command sequence is coupled to a command processor within the modem and processed. In applications in which the modem is coupled between a data processing system and a cellular telephone communication channel, the selected command sequence may be utilized to transmit communication channel parameter status queries to a cellular telephone associated with the modem. In this manner, the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), bit error rate, or other indications of communication channel status may be queried.

Abstract: A method of maintaining functional compatibility after performing system maintenance on a computer during system operation is described. The method starts when there is a request to perform system maintenance by determining if a directory holding a set of files to be maintenanced has adequate space for a set of new files. The system maintenance typically occurs when the operating system is to be replaced by a new operating system or upgraded with an improved version of the current operating system. Next, the system, in response to there being adequate space to for the new set of files, places the new set of files in the directory. Each file within the new set of files is given a new name within the directory. Each file in the set of old files in the directory is then renamed with a temporary name. The new names of the new set of files are then placed in an alias table for access by any other files open on the computer during maintenance.

Abstract: A mobile data terminal external antenna is disclosed for use with a battery powered data processing terminal which includes a radio frequency communication device, such as a cellular telephone transceiver. Multiple antenna elements are mounted within a D-shaped flexible tubular member having a very low dielectric constant which is then affixed to the external surface of the data processing terminal, utilizing an adhesive on the flat surface thereof. The flexible tubular member is preferably mounted along at least two edges of the data processing terminal display module such that spatial or polarization diversity for the multiple antenna elements may be provided. A coaxial connector is utilized to couple the multiple antenna elements to a radio frequency communication device within the data processing terminal.
