  • Patent number: 6348841
Abstract: A Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) with the ability to tune its operating frequency over a wide range using a limited control voltage range. The VCO implements a novel resonant circuit that provides the wide frequency tuning range and simultaneously provides increased immunity to induced low frequency noise. The resonant circuit utilizes an element configuration that includes high pass filters on each input to the resonant circuit. Varactor diodes are used to couple a conventional tuning circuit to the remainder of the resonant circuit. This configuration allows the resonant frequency to tune over a wide range using a limited control voltage range.

  • Patent number: 6278703
Abstract: In a system for mobile wireless communication, it is desirable to minimize the period of time during which the RF circuitry is powered (i.e. the RF power period). A novel method and apparatus for pilot monitoring during standby mode defers processing of pilot search results until the RF power period has passed. This approach allows more searches to be performed without extending the RF power period, thus improving idle handoff performance without reducing battery charge life.

  • Patent number: 6215337
Abstract: A linear sampling circuit is constructed with an p-channel and an n-channel field effect transistor (FET). A source node of the p-channel FET is coupled to a drain node of the n-channel FET and a drain node of the p-channel FET is coupled to a source node of the n-channel FET. A sampling clock is coupled to the gate node of each FET. A first side of the linear sampling circuit is connected to an analog or RF signal source and a far side of the linear sampling circuit is connected to a holding capacitor. The a n-channel FET has a n-channel width. A p-channel FET has a p-channel width. The p-channel width is larger than the n-channel width in order to increase the linearity of the on-resistance of the resulting switch.

  • Patent number: 6181911
Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for performing position location in wireless communications system. One embodiment comprises a method for performing position location using a set of signals transmitted from a set of satellites including the steps of storing coarse search data, performing a coarse search on said coarse search data for each satellite from said set of satellites, receiving fine search data, performing a set of fine searches on said fine search data, each fine search being performed on a different time segment of said fine search data, and reporting results.

  • Patent number: 6172481
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapid charging a battery that compensates for sub-optimal interconnection between the charger and the battery. In the present invention the effect of an imperfect interconnection between a charger and a battery is empirically characterized. The elements of the imperfect interconnection include any resistive losses between the battery charger output and the battery cells. The battery charger incorporates a control loop that measures the current flowing into the battery and the voltage at the interconnect terminals. The control loop then calculates the voltage at the actual batteries based on the measured values and the predetermined interconnect characterization. The control loop uses the calculation to adjust the output of the charger to achieve the optimal voltage at the batteries. The result of optimizing the charging voltage is a significant charge time reduction.
