Abstract: A Faraday rotator for rotating a plane of polarization of polarized light, said Faraday rotator having an optical element comprising a rod which is comprised of an optically transmitting composition comprising from about 15 wt. % to about 50 wt. % germanium, from about 5 wt. % to about 20 wt. % arsenic, and from about 30 wt. % to about 80 wt. % selenium. This Faraday rotator is especially useful in an optical isolator for preventing feedback of transmitted light waves.
Abstract: A carburettor for a motor on a marine craft, with lower part 1 holding fuel 2 is provided with flexible piping 12 communicating at each end with openings 13, 14 both in the said lower part. The piping 12 preferably has an enlarged intermediate portion 16. If the carburettor is inverted e.g. upon vessel capsize, the fuel 2 drains into the piping 12/16, which is dimensioned to hold the fuel so that, when the vessel is righted the fuel drains back into the lower portion 1 without detrimental loss of contamination.
Abstract: An incubation apparatus containing a rack or block with openings capable of receiving containers containing reagents. The rack or block is attached to a heating element for heating containers in the block. The block is driven by a motor actuated by a timer such that at the end of a predetermined time period the block is pivoted whereby containers will fall out of the block and onto a sloping surface on the housing of the incubator. This apparatus provides for the carrying out of reactions for a predetermined amount of time without the necessity of close monitoring of the incubation by laboratory personnel.
Abstract: I(g)G3 antibody is purified by affinity chromatography and collection of released antibody at a pH of 9.0 to 9.6. The purification is effected in a column containing both an affinity matrix and a desalting matrix, with the column being equilibrated to a pH of from 9.0 to 9.6. I(g)G3 antibody may be stored at pH 9.0 to 9.6.
Abstract: A device for welding portions of two overlapping roof membranes wherein a fastening means has been fastened to the lower of the two membranes and wherein there are portions of both overlapping membranes on both sides of the fastening means. The device includes a welding means which can apply welds to the membranes on both sides of the fastening means simultaneously. The welding means includes a nozzle having two outlets, with each outlet applying a heat sealing weld on one side of the fastening means. The device also includes a pair of weighted stitcher wheel assemblies which help to eliminate air pockets for underneath the roof membranes and to maintain the proper alignment of the overlapping membranes. The invention also includes a welding process using the above-mentioned device.
Abstract: An improved electrical connector which has improved durability and stability when exposed to low temperature the connector comprises alternating layers of electrically conductive and non-conductive material. The electrically conductive and non-conductive layers each include a silicone-containing material of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is methyl, vinyl, or phenyl, R.sub.2 is methyl or vinyl, and X+Y+Z equals 0 to about 2 million.
Abstract: Vesicles having a material encapsulated therein are produced by placing an "empty" vesicle in a liguid including a material to be encapsulated and perturbing the vesicle, preferable by passage through a porous material.
Abstract: A tripod type constant velocity joint comprises: a housing including three grooves each of which has curved surfaces opposing each other in a circumferential direction; a shaft inserted into the housing; three trunnions mounted on said shaft and outwardly extending right-angled relative to an axis of said shaft; three rollers movably mounted on said three trunnions; and an aligning member disposed between each of the three rollers and the curved surfaces of each of the three grooves; said aligning member means being movable along the curved surfaces of said groove.
Abstract: In the solvent refining of a residual oil, a mixture of refined oil and refining solvent, and a mixture of pitch impurities and refining solvent are introduced into separate zones of a combination tower operated at a pressure of no greater than 100 psig to recover refining solvent from each of the mixtures. The combination tower is preferably A modified crude distillation tower from a preexisting crude unit, whereby idle crude units may be converted to solvent refining.

Abstract: An improvement in a curtained door and net assembly wherein the net is contained in a curtain-sided van body. The improvement comprises a means for attaching the net to the curtained door. In a preferred embodiment, the improvement comprises a pocket means for containing the net which is attached to the curtained door.
Abstract: A fitter bolt bracket is provided for holding a luminaire to a luminaire support. The bracket comprises an elongated metal piece having a base section joining two raised edge sections, with the bracket having a channel shaped cross section. The raised edge sections each have a cut out portion, and the base section has two holes one near either end. The bracket holes are aligned with two laterally and longitudinally offset holes in the upper housing of the luminaire. The cut out portion of the raised edge section are axially aligned with a tubular luminaire support. The bracket is held to the upper housing by two bolts each one passing through one hole in the bracket and threading into the corresponding hole in the upper housing.
Abstract: A stress plate and method for securing a membrane to a roof deck wherein the plate includes gripping prongs which grip the membrane, preferably without piercing the membrane, wherein a stress plate surface having the gripping prongs is placed in contact with a top surface of a roof membrane to clamp the membrane to a roof structure.
Abstract: An improved melt-processable composition of a thermoplastic polymer selected from the class consisting of hexafluoroisobutylene/vinylidene fluoride copolymer, and ethylene/chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer, wherein added to said thermoplastic polymer are a phosphite ester and an oxamidoester. A preferred phosphite ester is tris (2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite, and a preferred oxamidoester is 2,2'-oxamidobis [ethyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate]. In a preferred composition, about 1 wt. % of phosphite ester and about 0.5 wt. % of oxamidoester are added to a hexafluoroisobutylene/vinylidene fluoride copolymer.
