  • Patent number: 5870219
Abstract: A non-contact light beam scan system small enough to fit into a hand holdable wand, pen or calculator size terminal incorporates a novel scan element which can scan at rates of ten to hundreds of scans per second in one or two dimensions. The device is immune to low frequency vibrations and can scan large angles of 60 degrees or more. Automatic trigger circuitry enables it to be used equally well in hand held or fixed mount applications. The depth of operating range is extended with a novel focal system which is integrated with the light source. The entire scanning system for generating a beam, focusing the beam electronically, scanning the beam, collecting light from a target and converting it into electrical signals, and automatically generating a trigger signal can work with industry standard low or high speed bar code decoders.

  • Patent number: 5865948
Abstract: A continuous solvent pulping process is practiced with oxygen free gas (e.g. nitrogen) purges of all major treatment vessels during the time when the process is arrested or terminated. The wood chips or other cellulosic fibrous material to be pulped is steamed in a first horizontal steaming zone at pressure of about 10-20 psi, and then in a second horizontal steaming zone at a pressure of about 20-75 psi. The first and second zones are isolated by a low pressure feeder. Steam is introduced into the material in the second steaming zone to flow cocurrently with it. Gases, including vaporized solvent (e.g. ethanol or other alcohol) are vented from the steaming zones, and solvent is added to the steamed material prior to feeding to a high pressure feeder. The high pressure feeder introduces the material into the top of a single digesting vessel, liquid and chips being separated at the top of the digester vessel without mechanical means that could cause a spark.

  • Patent number: 5863661
Abstract: A method of making c-axis perpendicularly oriented barium hexaferrite thin films by the crystallization of amorphous barium hexaferrite on a platinum underlayer is provided. Using a thin underlayer of platinum, barium hexaferrite films can be deposited by conventional rf diode or magnetron sputtering. Such deposition may be performed at room temperature, after which excellent c-axis perpendicular orientation can be achieved by rapid ex-situ annealing. The c-axis perpendicular orientation can also be achieved through in-situ annealing.

  • Patent number: 5851929
Abstract: A method for correcting the shape of a semiconductor structure. According to the method the shape of a semiconductor structure is initially determined to discern the presence, location and magnitude of structural deformities including warp and bow. Information derived from the topography of the structure is then used to control a heating apparatus. More particularly, individual zones or elements of a multiple zone heating assembly are selectively controlled to direct heat radiation of nonuniform intensities toward different regions of the structure to effect non-isothermal conditions within the structure and thereby reduce deformities that were determined to be present in the structure prior to shape correction.
