Abstract: A process for forming an opacifying pigment encapsulated in polymer including (a) dispersing a pigment particle having an average particle diameter of from 150 to 500 nm and an index of refraction of at least 1.8 such as, for example, TiO2 in a medium with from 0.1% to 10% by weight, based on the weight of said pigment particle, sulfur acid-functional first polymer whereby the zeta potential of the dispersed pigment particle is less than ?28 mV between pH 5 and pH 8; and (b) performing an emulsion polymerization in the presence of the dispersed pigment particle to provide from 10% to 200%, by weight, based on the weight of the pigment particle, second polymer that at least partially encapsulates the dispersed pigment particle. Also provided are the encapsulated pigment particle so formed and compositions including the encapsulated pigment particle.

Abstract: A polymer composition with blocks of hydrophobes attached to or within the backbone of an associative thickener. The blocks are composed of two or more units of the same or different hydrophobes whereby the hydrophobe is reversibly switched between being hydrophilic and hydrophobic in nature. When the hydrophobe is rendered hydrophilic, the aqueous thickener is pourable and readily incorporated into aqueous polymer compositions. When this hydrophobe is rendered hydrophobic, the thickener performs its thickening function efficiently, especially in tinted systems. Switching is readily accomplished by adjusting the pH of the associative thickener composition and the aqueous polymer composition being thickened.

Abstract: An organic-inorganic composite particle containing an inorganic particle having a plurality of polymer particles attached to the inorganic particle and a polymer layer encapsulating the attached polymer particles. A process is provided for the organic-inorganic composite particle. The organic-inorganic composite particle is useful in the preparation of dried coatings that have improved hiding, whiteness, or gloss.
