  • Patent number: 8201206
Abstract: In an IPTV network, cache memory assigned to each DSLAM, Central Office (CO) or Intermediate Office (IO) can be determined by defining a network cost function having cache memory per DSLAM, cache memory per CO and cache memory per IO as decision variables. The network cost function can be minimized to determine the optimal cache memory size for the network. The network cost function can be subject to boundary constraints that the cache memory is between zero and a maximum cache memory size for each network node type, allowing the network cost function to be solved as a 3-ary tree.

  • Patent number: 7975166
Abstract: In a digital video system, high availability distribution is provided using spare modules such as an integrated receiver decoder, multimedia transcoder and streaming module in support of the primary modules. The primary modules multicast status messages which are monitored by the spare modules. When failure of a primary module is detected, the spare module takes over the role of the failed module, for example by joining the same multicast groups as the failed module and taking over processing of the streams of the failed module. Multiple redundancy schemes are described.

  • Patent number: 7747761
Abstract: A system and method for establishing a SIP session between calling and called end-points. A SIP server receives a SIP INVITE request for establishing the SIP session. The SIP INVITE request includes standard routing information in its header. The SIP server receives the SIP INVITE request and responds by transmitting to the calling end-point a HTML link associated with a web server. In rendering the contents of the HTML link, the calling end-point transmits an HTTP request to the web server including voice cookie information. The voice cookie information may include information gathered about the caller such as the caller profile information, transaction information, caller intent information, or recent and past history associated with a web site domain. The web server forwards the voice cookies to the SIP server. The SIP server determines an address of the called end-point as a function of the routing information in the SIP INVITE request and the voice cookie information.

  • Patent number: 7706519
Abstract: An assembly, and an associated method, by which to place a telephonic station in virtual residency in a telephonic network. The virtually-resident telephonic station is coupled to a packet data network, such as the Internet backbone. The virtually-resident telephonic station has packet network address determined by the location of its connection to the packet data network. An index, formed by an indexer, is maintained at a proxy server embodied at the packet data network. When a call is placed by a calling station for connection with the virtually-resident telephonic station, the call is routed to the packet data network, and the index is accessed to ascertain the address of the virtually-resident telephonic station. When the address is ascertained, the call is routed to the virtually-resident telephonic station, and the call connection is completed.

  • Patent number: 7706802
Abstract: Calls are routed in a distributed mobile switching center environment in response to receiving a call to be routed from a first switching mode (310(1) to a second switching node (310(2)). An inter-switch mute for the call from the first switching node to the second switching node is identified. The inter-switch route includes an intermediate switching node (305) having multiple media gateway (320). An intra-switch route within the intermediate switching node is selected from multiple possible intra-switch routes for use in establishing the inter-switch route. Each of the intra-switch routes includes one or more interconnections (330) between media gateways. The call is connected using the identified inter-switch route and the selected intra-switch route.

  • Patent number: 7639674
Abstract: A data communications switch for dynamically distributing packet processing operations between an ingress and egress processor for load balancing is disclosed. The invention in the preferred embodiment features a switching device including a plurality of switching modules, each of the switching modules including a packet classifier for identifying one or more packet processing operations to be applied to an ingress packet and a controller adapted to allocate each of the identified one or more packet processing operations between a first set of packet processing operations and a second set of packet processing operations, execute the first set of packet processing operations at the ingress processor at which the packet was received, and transmit instructions to the egress processor to execute the second set of packet processing operations. The egress processor then executes the second set of packet processing operations, after which the packet may be transmitted toward its destination node.

  • Patent number: 7631096
Abstract: A method and apparatus for provisioning bandwidth among a plurality of queues in a switching device are disclosed. The bandwidth provisioning employs a QoS label with a timestamp to determine the queue delay associated with the transmission of the packet from an ingress switching device, e.g. ingress blade, to an egress switching device, e.g. egress blade. The QoS label is applied on the ingress blade and removed and read on the egress blade. Using the timestamp, the switch can identify congested priority queues at the ingress blade and selectively enable fragmentation for purposes of preventing particular packets and or particular flows from consuming disproportionately large system resources including bandwidth necessary to communicate packets through the switch fabric. Some QoS labels may further include instruction sets and a fragmentation identifiers used by the egress blade to reassemble the packet fragments.

  • Patent number: 7621162
Abstract: A method of multiplexing a plurality of data flows into a single output using hierarchical gating operations instead of queues is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, the hierarchical multiplexing method comprises sequentially processing a packet at each of a plurality of hierarchical levels by characterizing the flow at each hierarchical level and either passing or discarding the packet. The decision whether to pass or discard a packet is generally made for each packet at one or more hierarchical levels based on traffic parameters and the state of the system such as congestion. In the preferred embodiment, a Three Color Marker algorithm is used to characterize the flow and mark packets subjecting to the discard decision. The invention may be used by a router or multi-layer switch to process multiple data flows in a hierarchical fashion without hierarchical queues, thereby reducing processing and memory requirements.
