  • Patent number: 5898908
Abstract: A portable RF telephone for use in a vehicle may be coupled to an external antenna to overcome the shielding effects of the metallic enclosure of the automobile. While coupled to the external antenna, the portable RF telephone increases the amount of power used to transmit an RF signal. Preferably, the transmit power increases to a maximum level allowed within a defined power classification. Increasing the transmit power overcomes cabling and connector losses associated with using an external antenna and further increases the effective transmitting power without exceeding power levels defined by the telephones power classification.

  • Patent number: 5897443
Abstract: A golf practice device that provides the feel of natural turf is formed of a mat with an insert including a continuous, rotatable belt extending around spaced, parallel rollers to create a moveable horizontal, ball supporting, upper surface. A tray for holding a deformable material is located beneath said belt upper surface, so that striking of the belt upper surface depresses the belt downwardly into engagement with the deformable material while rotating the upper surface of the belt toward the front of the mat to simulate the feel on striking a golf ball on a natural turf or sand surface.

  • Patent number: 5898745
Abstract: A fuel assembly locator for guiding and inserting nuclear fuel assemblies into a grid plate of a reactor vessel during reload. In the preferred embodiment, the fuel assembly locator includes a plurality of generally trapezoidal guides each having a multiplicity of serially increasing tiered slope regions for gradually directing the fuel assembly precisely into a grid plate opening. The increasing slope regions allow greater positional tolerance between the exterior of the fuel assembly and the interior opening of the grid plate opening initially, thus requiring less time and precision to align the fuel assembly with respect to the grid plate opening. The tolerance then gradually decreases since the slope of each successive tier is greater than the previous tier, thus precisely directing the fuel assembly into alignment with the grid plate opening for insertion therein.

  • Patent number: 5895870
Abstract: A retractable probe for placing and removing corrosion coupons from a steam generator during chemical cleaning of the steam generator, the chemical process occurring at a relatively high pressure and temperature. The probe includes a series of inner-linked and hinged sections which may be manipulated to insert the probe within and through the various structures of the steam generator, including the shell and shroud, while avoiding contact with tie rods and blow down lines and facilitating easier operation within the tight confines of the barriers surrounding the generator system. A bendable Teflon.RTM. rod is used to withdraw the coupon through the differently angled sections of the probe and eventually through the nozzle opening or man-hole of the shell. A selectively openable valve is utilized in combination with a packing gland. This combination allows the coupon to be removed while the steam generator is being cleaned or operated.

  • Patent number: 5896459
Abstract: An audio mixer has separate dry mix, effects returns mix and main mix mixing buses, each mixing bus having a separate mix output. Multiple audio signals are mixed together without effects processing onto a dry mixing bus. Simultaneously, the original audio signals are also mixed together at various levels onto multiple sends mixing buses which are coupled to an effects sends (or output). The mixed audio signals on each of the sends mixing buses are sent to either internal or external effects processors wherein various effects are added to the mixed signals. The processed signals from the effects processors are fed back into the mixer (if external effects processors are used) through an effects return and further mixed together onto an effects mixing bus. Thus, the effects mix bus includes the sum of the processed mixed signals from the sends mixing buses. The dry mix and the effects mix are subsequently mixed onto a main mixing bus to provide a main mix output.

  • Patent number: 5896268
Abstract: A repeater case for high-density subscriber lines includes a repeater base and repeater case housing formed of a fiberglass composite and together forming a sealed enclosure for a pressurized atmosphere. The repeater case housing has a removable cover secured in position by torque bolts, a sealing gasket to sealingly receive the cover, a plurality of high-density subscriber line module slots and a plurality of printed circuit boards mounted to certain of the slots with gaps between adjacent printed circuit boards, the printed circuit boards being adapted to receive respective high-density subscriber line modules. The repeater base has a cable inlet, and each of the plurality of printed circuit boards is provided with a connection to the cable inlet and a connector to electrically receive one of the high-density subscriber line modules. The repeater base also includes an electrically insulating barrier between the cable inlet and the printed circuit boards.

  • Patent number: 5890318
Abstract: An improved plant tray formed of sturdy, injection-molded plastic. The plant tray is a precision-molded grid-like structure, having a series of individual plant cells arranged in side-by-side relationship with each other and having open tops and bottoms. A solid plastic wall separates each plant cell from an adjacent plant cell. Each cell wall has a varying thickness, tapering from a relatively thick top edge to a relatively thin bottom edge, to impart a progressively increasing cross-sectional area to the individual plant cells, from top to bottom. In each cell, there are reinforcing gussets at the corner junctures of adjacent cell walls. A perforated bottom screen retains young plants in the cells and is reinforced by relatively thick plastic runners that form a grid on its lower surface. In the one embodiment, the plant tray includes 432 individual plant cells so that the plant tray is compatible with conventional plant flats having 24, 36, 48, or 72 individual plant receiving cavities.

  • Patent number: 5888518
Abstract: A method for preventing and treating parasitic infections in animals by administering a lysine analog, such as EACA, to the animals on a continuous basis. In the preferred embodiment, the method of the present invention is directed to preventing and treating coccidial infections in poultry by adding EACA to the daily diet of a poultry flock. EACA may also be administered in ovo before hatching. The administration of EACA enhances the natural immune response of the poultry to the invading coccidial organisms and enables the poultry to combat the parasites without the need for antibiotics. Another aspect of the present invention involves preventing parasitic diseases in humans and animals by prophylactically administering a serine protease inhibitor, such as EACA, as an adjuvant in conjunction with a conventional vaccine effective against the target parasite.

  • Patent number: 5890072
Abstract: A radiotelephone having an acoustical wave guide for channeling and directing sound energy into a microphone forming a part of the radiotelephone. The wave guide includes an elongated tube structure that varies in cross-sectional area from an inlet end to an outlet end thereof. More particularly, the wave guide is formed by a wall structure that includes portions that assume a wave configuration. This wave configuration gives rise to the varying cross-sectional area that is repeatedly found between the inlet and outlet end portions of the wave guide. This wave type configuration for the wave guide forms an acoustical low-pass filter that propagates and transmits non-resonant low frequencies in the range of 300 Hz to 3,000 Hz.

  • Patent number: 5887534
Abstract: A frame for holding a cap of the type having a bill and a front crown. The frame includes an inner subframe having an inner band and an outer subframe having an outer band. The inner and outer bands are hingedly joined on one end so that the outer band may be selectively folded between an open position wherein the outer band is spaced from the inner band and a closed position wherein the outer band is disposed adjacent the inner band. Latch mechanisms are provided for selectively securing the outer band in the closed position. Spaced apart support arms extend upwardly from the inner band. Spaced apart clamp arms extend upwardly from the outer band. When the outer band is in the closed position, an outer opening defined between the clamp arms is disposed adjacent an inner opening defined by the support arms, and the clamp arms are disposed adjacent respective support arms for clamping portions of the crown of the cap therebetween. Each of the support arms includes a reinforcing rib integrally formed therein.
