Abstract: In a gas turbine having a chordal hinge seal between an inner rail of each nozzle segment and an annular axially facing sealing surface of a nozzle support ring, a supplemental seal is disposed between the support ring and inner rail of the nozzle segment on a lower pressure side of the chordal hinge seal. The supplemental seal comprises a segmented annular composite tubular woven compliant seal disposed in a cavity along a sealing surface of the inner rail of the segment. The seal bears against the annular sealing surface of the nozzle support ring, which compresses the seal. Because of the compliant nature of the seal, a supplemental seal is formed on the low pressure side of the chordal hinge seal.

Abstract: Lignite is formed into high strength pellets having a calorific value of at least 9,500 Btu/lb by blending a sufficient amount of an aqueous base bituminous emulsion with finely-divided raw lignite containing its inherent moisture to form a moistened green mixture containing at least 3 weight % of the bituminous material, based on the total dry weight of the solids, pelletizing the green mixture into discrete green pellets of a predetermined average diameter and drying the green pellets to a predetermined moisture content, preferrably no less than about 5 weight %. Lignite char and mixture of raw lignite and lignite char can be formed into high strength pellets in the same general manner.
Abstract: A toroidal magnet for confining a high magnetic field for use in fusion reactor research and nuclear particle detection. The magnet includes a series of conductor elements arranged about and fixed at its small major radius portion to the outer surface of a central cylindrical support each conductor element having a geometry such as to maintain the conductor elements in pure tension when a high current flows therein, and a support assembly which redistributes all or part of the tension which would otherwise arise in the small major radius portion of each coil element to the large major radius portion thereof.

Abstract: A secondary electrochemical cell is prepared by providing positive and negative electrodes having outer enclosures of rigid perforated electrically conductive material defining an internal compartment containing the electrode material in porous solid form. The electrodes are each immersed in molten electrolyte salt prior to cell assembly to incorporate the cell electrolyte. Following solidification of the electrolyte substantially throughout the porous volume of the electrode material, the electrodes are arranged in an alternating positive-negative array with interelectrode separators of porous frangible electrically insulative material. The completed array is assembled into the cell housing and sealed such that on heating the solidified electrolyte flows into the interelectrode separator.
