Patent number: 5885273Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing hair is disclosed. The method includes the step of producing a plurality of pulses of incoherent electromagnetic energy. The delay between pulses is in the range of 0.1 msec to 100 msec. The incoherent electromagnetic energy is then coupled to an area of surface of the tissue that includes more than one hair follicle. One or more filters are used to provide energy having a wavelength selected in accordance with the color of the hair. The method may alternatively include the step of applying a gel on a surface of the tissue to cool the tissue. The energy heats the hairs and hair follicles, without heating the tissue. The apparatus includes a source of pulsed incoherent electromagnetic energy. The source is located within a housing, and a coupler directs the incoherent electromagnetic energy to the surface of the tissue.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1996Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Assignee: ESC Medical Systems, Ltd.Inventors: Shimon Eckhouse, Hillel Bachrach

Patent number: 5879346Abstract: Hair removal by using an Alexandrite laser emitting energy between 0.2-40 joules per pulse to provide an energy fluence between 15 and 70 joules per centimeter square and having a pulse duration of between 100 microseconds and 10 milliseconds. A scanner may be used to direct the laser beam on the tissue. The skin in the area to be irradiated may be shaved prior to exposure to laser treatment and may be also covered by a protective substance serving as a heat sink.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: ESC Medical Systems, Ltd.Inventors: Amir Waldman, Zvi Rozenberg, Ofer Braude, Michael Slatkine

Patent number: 5868732Abstract: Apparatus and method for tracking the operation of a light beam, preferably a laser light beam, which operates to treat the skin of the patient. The apparatus includes plurality of markings in accordance with the light beam impinges on the locations to be treated. The apparatus including the plurality of markings may be a cooling apparatus which also cools the skin during the treatment.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1996Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: ESC Medical Systems, Ltd.Inventors: Amir Waldman, Michael Slatkine, Ofer Braude, Arie Klein, Yitzhak Rozenberg, Jerry Talpalariu

Patent number: 5286256Abstract: A surgical instrument for removing a cataract from a patient's eye including a hollow vibrating needle surrounded by two hollow infusion sleeves. The outer sleeve conforms to the incision in the eye and the inner sleeve prevents the outer sleeve from collapsing onto the hollow, vibrating needle.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1992Date of Patent: February 15, 1994Inventor: Richard J. Mackool

Patent number: 5260726Abstract: A pair of non-prescription eyeglasses is mounted on a cantilevered support by a hanger that includes an element constructed of relatively stiff resilient plastic material. Such element includes a relatively wide main section having an aperture which receives the support arm, and a relatively narrow extension. The latter passes through the nose gap of the eyeglasses and is reversely bent to form a loop that surrounds the eyeglass frame bridge. In a first embodiment of this invention a rivet maintains the loop closed and prevents casual removal of the hanger from the eyeglasses. In a second embodiment a snap-type device holds the loop closed. This snap-type closure cannot be opened casually, at least for the first opening thereof.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1992Date of Patent: November 9, 1993Assignee: Al-Site Corp.Inventor: Michael S. Nyman

Patent number: 5209223Abstract: A muscle exercise and rehabilitation apparatus including a patient chair having a first side and a second side is disclosed. Structure is provided for the rehabilitation and exercise of a patient seated in the patient chair. Structure is provided to move the rehabilitation and exercise structure between a first position adjacent the first side of the patient chair and a second position adjacent the second side of the patient chair in a first linear path. Structure is provided to support the patient chair for movement along a second linear path toward and away from the exercise and rehabilitation structure.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1992Date of Patent: May 11, 1993Assignee: Biodex Medical Systems, Inc.Inventors: Raymond W. McGorry, Aldo Sori

Patent number: 4399010Abstract: This application discloses a method for and an apparatus in which isotopes of an element in a compound are separated from each other while that compound, i.e., including a mixture of such isotopes, flows along a predetermined path. The apparatus includes a flow tube having a beginning and an end. The mixture of isotopes is introduced into the flow tube at a first introduction point between the beginning and the end thereof to flow the mixture toward the end thereof. A laser irradiates the flow tube dissociating compounds of a preselected one of said isotopes thereby converting the mixture in an isotopically selective manner. The dissociation products are removed from the tube at a first removal point between the first introduction point and the end. The dissociation product removed at the first removal point are reconverted back into the compound thereby providing a first stage enriched compound.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1978Date of Patent: August 16, 1983Assignee: Exxon Research and Engineering Co.Inventors: Richard K. Lyon, Philip N. Eisner, William R. I. Thomas

Patent number: 4357307Abstract: Methods for separating isotopes are disclosed including providing molecules which contain the element whose isotopes are to be separated and which have an isotopically shifted but overlapping infrared absorption spectrum associated with those isotopes which does not change appreciably upon the absorption of photons, irradiating those molecules at an infrared absorption frequency to isotopically selectively dissociate those molecules and provide molecular fragments which appear over a period of time, and collecting only those molecular fragments which dissociate within a predetermined portion of that time interval. In preferred methods, the isotopes of uranium are separated employing molecules having the general formula UO.sub.2 (A.sub.1 A.sub.2).multidot.L.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1979Date of Patent: November 2, 1982Assignee: Exxon Research and Engineering CompanyInventor: John A. Patent number: 4302305Abstract: This application discloses a method of separating the isotopes of an element which form a volatile compound having an isotopically shifted but overlapping infrared absorption spectrum. In the method, IR radiation of first and second laser frequencies are employed. The first infrared laser frequency produces a selective excitation of the desired isotope of the compound, while the second infrared laser frequency produces a higher multiphoton excitation which allows conversion of the excited compound.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1978Date of Patent: November 24, 1981Assignee: Exxon Research & Engineering Co.Inventors: Andrew Kaldor, Paul Rabinowitz
