  • Patent number: 4544493
Abstract: A process for neutralizing an organic sulfuric or sulfonic detergent acid, e.g., lauryl sulfuric acid or mixture of such acids, in liquid state, with a liquid solution or slurry of neutralizing agent of a low moisture content is conducted in a wiped film neutralizing reactor wherein a film of the organic acid(s) and neutralizing agent(s) is formed on an internal wall of the reactor, which wall (with the film) is continuously wiped during the neutralization reaction by a wall scraper or a plurality of scrapers which also agitate the reactants, whereby there is produced a pumpable aqueous slurry, having a high concentration of the detergent salt solids which is above a gel region which prevents the concentration of such detergents made by other processes that produce lower detergent concentrations. During the reaction, which is usually preferably conducted under vacuum, the heat generated is removed, usually by evaporation of water, so as to maintain a desirable temperature for the neutralization.

  • Patent number: 4501834
Abstract: The formation of novel water soluble and water insoluble gels by interpolymer reactions of selective anionic polymers with selective cationic polymers in an aqueous medium, with either polymer serving as a cross-linking agent under specific conditions of speed and concentration. The selective cationic polymer is a quaternized ammonium polyelectrolyte selected from the group consisting of poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride), poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride-co-acrylamide), and a quaternary ammonium cellulose ether polymer. The anionic polymer is selected from the group consisting of a polysulfonic acid and alginic acid. The formation of the gel structure depends on fast and intensive interaction of the two opposite charges to insure a maximum amount of ion pair formation. The solubility of the gel depends on the formation of intimate or loose ion pairs; which depends on the charge density and structure of the polyelectrolytes. These interpolymer gels exhibit a dramatic increase in viscosity.

  • Patent number: 4488934
Abstract: Free oil, often an objectionable impurity in synthetic organic detergents, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, is removed from aqueous solutions by extraction thereof with hexane in the presence of lower alkanol, with the proportion of the alkanol present being in a relatively narrow range with respect to the sodium lauryl sulfate, in which range it helps to promote efficient extraction of the free oil by the hexane without solubilizing the hexane in the aqueous medium to such an extent as to result in an extracted detergent containing an unacceptably high proportion of hexane. Separation of the free oil from the aqueous detergent solution is effected in an extractor, to which the hexane is added, in mixture with a minor proportion of lower alkanol, normally isopropanol, and extraction of the free oil takes place after a preliminary mixing of isopropanol with detergent acid or neutralized base in a neutralization vessel and/or in a mixer upstream of the extractor.

  • Patent number: 4362640
Abstract: Gelation, setting, and solidification of desirably miscible and pumpable aqueous crutcher slurries of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium silicate are retarded or prevented by admixing of the sodium silicate component of the medium, as an aqueous solution, concurrently with gaseous carbon dioxide, with a slurry of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate in water. During such addition the pH of the slurry is desirably controlled so as to be about 9.9. Although pressurized liquid carbon dioxide is normally employed as a source of the gas, it is within the invention to utilize solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) or liquid carbon dioxide directly, and pieces, particles and droplets thereof may be added to the crutcher mix, wherein they will vaporize quickly. The crutcher slurries may be spray dried and the resulting products are useful as base materials for absorbing nonionic detergent applied to them in liquid state, to produce a particulate heavy duty synthetic organic detergent composition.
