  • Patent number: 5522504
Abstract: Corrugated box constructions suitable for packaging, storing and transporting flat rectangular objects such as books and the like. The box has a generally rectangular central panel, a pair of side panels hingedly joined to one of the opposite ends of the central panel. The side panels fold first perpendicularly and then parallel to the central panel and have a leaf-spring terminus. A top panel is hingedly joined to one of the transverse sides of the central panel. The top panel folds first perpendicularly upward, then parallel, then perpendicularly downward and under the central panel. The construction allows for packaging products of various sizes and yet provides a cushioned retention of the product without changing the carton size.

  • Patent number: 5510147
Abstract: A relaxed sol-gel composition and a coated substrate article which is produced therefrom. A tetrafunctional alkoxide silicate is hydrolyzed in an aqueous solution together with a Lewis acid or metal chelate catalyst with optional protic acid until a viscosity of 2600-3200 cps is obtained to form a crosslinked sol-gel polymer composition. The polymer is relaxed by diluting it with water or water plus alcohol optionally containing a Lewis acid or metal chelate until a viscosity of about 1 cps is obtained while not depolymerizing the polymer. The relaxed polymer has substantially no visible polymer particles. The relaxed polymer composition is uniformly coating a substrate and dried without requiring an in-situ curing.

  • Patent number: 5475967
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting open a sealed box. A box typically has several of planar panels having a thickness and which panels meet at edges to define a box length, width and height and a central cavity. A box is conveyed to a cutting station where it is urged against a rotating blade which cuts through a box edge and pierces parallel to the plane of and into the thickness of one of the planar panels without entering the central cavity. The apparatus and method are useful for slitting boxes containing rectangular objects without marring the box contents. The apparatus is particularly useful for cutting open boxes containing books or the like, without damaging the box contents.

  • Patent number: 5438250
Abstract: A process for charging a multi-cell battery by the use of a battery recharging device and a device controlled by a microcontroller and containing a potential-free battery recharging device to analyze and optimize the charged state of a multi-cell battery, with a device for the switchable connection of selectable terminal voltages of battery sections or cells by means of a voltage measuring device. The microcontroller generates a charge current control signal for the battery recharging device which is calculated from the control algorithm of the microcontroller such that the voltage of the cell with the respectively highest terminal voltage is brought to and maintained at the level of a desired voltage value. Preferably the voltage threshold value is associated with the respective point in time of a characteristic charge curve recommended as being optimal for the type of cell used.

  • Patent number: 5420183
Abstract: The invention provides a substantially uniformly blended, flame retardant polypropylene composition and an extruded polypropylene sheet which comprises a polypropylene polymer, the bis(2,3-dibromopropylether) of tetrabromobisphenol A, antimony trioxide, titanium dioxide, calcium sulfate and distearyl pentaerythritol diphosphite. The invention further provides a method for producing such a polypropylene sheet material by forming a substantially uniform physical blend of the above components; drying the blend; heating the blend at a temperature above its melting point to form a melt of the blend components while mixing the melt; and extruding the blend through a sheet forming die and highly polished rollers.

  • Patent number: 5410961
Abstract: A fountain assembly for applying a fluid composition uniformly to the circumferential surface of a rotating transfer roller. The assembly has an elongated plastic frame having a concave channel formed on one side of it and a rigid metal brace on the other side. A pair of doctor blades is attached to opposite sides of said channel and positioned to contact the surface of the transfer roller. A pair of curved radial surface seals form a resilient bulkhead with the ends of said doctor blades to form a seal with the roller. The radial surface seals, doctor blades and concave channel form a closed chamber when positioned against the transfer roller. A pivot supports the fountain assembly, alternately swiveling said fountain assembly toward and away from the transfer roller. Means are provided for supplying a fluid composition into the channel.

  • Patent number: 5410840
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing a support-free vegetation mat which is particularly useful for roof greening. An earth substrate and plants with roots or moss having a stackable, dimensionally stable substrate with raised edges is provided. The vegetation mat is cultivated and transported and on laying the mat is separated from the substrate by sliding or drawing off. Thus, the vegetation mats are not only cultivated, but also transported in a stackable, dimensionally stable substrate with raised edges. Only at the time of laying the vegetation mat is the latter separated from the substrate by sliding or drawing off.

  • Patent number: 5380148
Abstract: An improved stacker apparatus for the formation of aligned stacks of signatures from one or more incoming streams of partially overlapping signatures in shingled form. The stacker has an outer framework having an input end and an output end. A stream of partially overlapping signatures in shingled form is accepted at the input end and is passed to a compression conveyor. The compression conveyor has two conveyor belts in compressed opposition to one other which follow an upward arcuate path along a series of idler rollers. The series of idler rollers is mounted to the outer framework by a quick release inner framework. The conveyor transfers the signatures to a receiving station which guides successive signatures into aligned stacking registry with one another. When a conveyor belt breaks, the inner frame is quick released from the outer frame, a new belt is wound around the inner frame, and the inner frame re-mounted.
