  • Patent number: 3994531
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved method of solution mining potassium chloride from subterranean ore deposits containing both potassium chloride and sodium chloride. By the present invention, an aqueous medium is passed through the ore deposits so that potassium chloride and sodium chloride are dissolved therein. Magnesium chloride is combined with the aqueous brine solution formed so that an aqueous brine solution containing potassium chloride, sodium chloride and magnesium chloride in specific proportions is produced, and the solubility of potassium chloride in the solution is reduced. The combined aqueous brine solution is then concentrated so that it is substantially saturated with potassium chloride, and the concentrated solution is cooled to cause the precipitation of substantially pure potassium chloride.

  • Patent number: 3985856
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved process for removing iron ions from an aqueous acid solution with a minimum removal of copper ions contained therein comprising the steps of combining an organic quaternary salt with the aqueous acid solution in an amount of at least about 0.01% by weight of said solution, adjusting the pH of the solution to a value in the range of from about 2.0 to about 2.5 so that iron ions contained in the solution are hydrolyzed and precipitated and then separating the precipitate from the solution.

  • Patent number: 3980628
Abstract: A process for polymerizing vinyl halide monomer in a large capacity reactor. Liquid polymerization medium comprising water, surfactant, and monomer is charged to the reactor, polymerization catalyst is added, and the polymerization medium is agitated in a manner to provide substantially laminar flow along a circular path about a generally vertical centrally located axis in the reaction zone. The polymerization medium is agitated in a manner to provide localized turbulent mixing near the periphery of the reaction zone, and the polymerization medium is maintained within selected ranges of temperature and pressure through the action of a vertical condensing tube positioned at the top of the reactor.

  • Patent number: 3979265
Abstract: Sulfur monochloride is reacted with an ore containing iron, sulfur and a metal which forms a water soluble ammine complex or an ammonium-containing double salt, to yield metal chlorides and sulfur. The metal sought is solubilized with an aqueous solution containing ammonium ions to produce an aqueous solution of metal ammine complex or double salt and thereby separate such complex or salt from the iron and sulfur. The solution containing the sought metal values can then be subjected to electrowinning to recover the metal, or the metal can be precipitated as the metal oxide by the addition of sodium hydroxide. Sulfur and chlorine are recovered during the process and used to regenerate sulfur monochloride.
