  • Patent number: 4273033
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly cooking food which includes pressing food directly against a very hot cooking surface with a liquid interface therebetween while the food is submerged in a heated cooking liquid, such as a water-base broth. The cooking surface is preferably formed with a plurality of dispersed dimples which collect and contain the liquid interface at the cooking surface when the food is pressed thereagainst. The apparatus includes two pans located at the entending ends of a connecting conduit with a perforated compression plate for pressing food against the bottom surface of each pan, and a burner is disposed beneath each pan. Controls are provided for alternately lowering the pans to positions immediately above these respective burners and to permit the cooking liquid to flow into the lowered pan, and for automatically energizing and de-energizing the burners when the pans are lowered and raised with respect thereto.

  • Patent number: 4259770
Abstract: The apparatus has two pairs of long driven nip rolls on which bobbins with residual roving are advanced axially in a row with the nip rolls engaging the ends of residual roving and unwinding the roving into a delivery plenum therebelow through which the roving is drawn by suction to the surface of a rotating perforated delivery drum through which the suction is drawn to retain the roving thereon as the drum rotates the roving to a discharge plenum in which a shredding drum shreds the roving for discharge in pieces through a discharge plenum. A baffle plate is mounted closely adjacent the delivery drum to confine suction through the drum and to allow roving to be transported on the delivery drum between the drum and the plate, and extends adjacent the shredding drum to confine the roving thereto. In one embodiment, the baffle plate is perforated to allow suction to be drawn through the plate into the drum and to direct roving to the shredding drum.

  • Patent number: 4242891
Abstract: A pneumatic take-down device for a circular knitting machine of the rotating cylinder type has a take-down tube mounted in the cylinder for rotation therewith and opens into an article receiving chamber in a housing that is mounted on the tube for rotation therewith. Suction is applied to the housing through perforations so that a suction take-down tension is applied to an article being knit to draw the article into the housing chamber and retain it therein without relative twisting during the knitting operation. The tube opens transversely to feed articles transversely to the perforations and also opens across the tube for in line discharge of articles through a discharge opening in the housing when suction is drawn through the discharge opening and discontinued through the perforations upon completion of knitting of an article. The tube has a cylindrically reduced portion adjacent the needle end of the cylinder for concentrated article tensioning suction thereat.

  • Patent number: 4229726
Abstract: Apparatus for recording traffic events occurring at a variety of vehicular traffic passageways, such apparatus including a portable housing unit having a keyboard presenting a predetermined pattern of pushbutton switches. A plurality of interchangeable display boards, each having different vehicular traffic patterns and symbolic traffic events displayed thereon, are selectively mounted over the keyboard, and each symbolic traffic even coincides with a particular pushbutton when so mounted. Choice of a suitable display board corresponding to a particular intersection and a desired type of traffic count allows a traffic checker to complete a traffic count by merely pressing a push-button switch corresponding to each observed traffic event and its location.

  • Patent number: 4223576
Abstract: A tool holder is provided for the cross slide of a lathe. A cutoff tool extends horizontally from the holder toward the rotational axis of a workpiece in the lathe, and a chamfering tool extends vertically downwardly from the holder in a common cutting plane with the cutoff tool. As the cutoff tool is advanced radially into the workpiece to cut a portion off the end thereof, the chamfering tool is thereby moved chordally with respect to the peripheral edges of the annular groove being formed in the workpiece by the cutoff tool. The cutting edges of the chamfering tool are preferably spaced from the cutoff tool such that they engage the groove edges during the cutting of the groove and complete the chamfering thereof prior to completion of cutoff.
