  • Patent number: 5504409
Abstract: A direct drive servovalve which includes a limited angle force motor having an eccentric engaging a two landed spool for converting rotary motion of the motor rotor into linear motion of the spool so as to control the flow of fluid from a source under pressure thereof of to a load. The two landed spool is in direct contact with a wall of the bore defined within the valve housing as opposed to utilization of a sleeve interposed between the wall of the bore and the spool valve. A pressure equalizing passageway is connected between the pressure passageways for the purpose of substantially reducing pressure drop when the spool valve translates to allow flow of fluid through the valve.

  • Patent number: 5504860
Abstract: An interlocking system for a railway comprises a plurality of processors (A, B and C), the system having an input (1) for receiving input information and an output (2) for providing control information. Each of the processors is adapted to test itself to check that it is operating correctly and each of the processors is also adapted to test another of the processors to check that the other processor is operating correctly, each of the processors also being so tested by another of the processors. The system is shut down or put into a more restricted mode of operation if a fault in its operation is detected, either as a result of a processor's self-testing routine or as a result of one of the processors detecting that another processor is not operating correctly. This achieves the integrity of a "dual-channel" system with only a single "channel" of hardware.

  • Patent number: 5499912
Abstract: A method and apparatus for marring the surface of a fiber optic substrate by feeding the substrate between a pair of rotating rollers. One of the rollers is coated with an abrasive. The second roller may be hard or have a deformable cover. Alternatively, one or both rollers may be serrated to produce a ripple pattern in the substrate. A hydraulic, pneumatic or other device is used for either manually and/or automatically adjusting the gap between the rollers. One or both rollers may also be heated to further enhance the marring action. A cam mechanism may also be used to adjust the pressure in the nip.

  • Patent number: 5500580
Abstract: An integrated compliance electrohydraulic servovalve system connected to a load such as a simulated living being to provide more realistic movement thereto. The system includes a pressure transducer for sensing the pressure appearing at the output of the electrohydraulic servovalve and which is applied to an actuator connected to the load. The pressure as sensed is developed into a corresponding electrical signal which is used as a feed back signal to the drive motor of the electrohydraulic servovalve. The actuator position signal is also provided and is summed with the position command input signal to provide the command signal which is also summed with the pressure signal prior to application to the drive motor. The utilization of the pressure feed back signal provides compliance to the over all system resulting in a realistic movement of the simulated living being.

  • Patent number: 5497975
Abstract: A solenoid valve for use in controlling the flow of pneumatic fluid under pressure between a pair of flow ports defined by a housing. The flow of fluid is controlled by a spool disposed within a bore and is movable between first and second positions. When in one of the first and second positions, the spool blocks communication between the ports and when in the other of those positions it allows communication between the flow ports. The spool is reciprocated by a motor means which includes a core of magnetic material connected to the spool so that when the motor is energized, the spool is placed in one of its first and second positions and when the motor is de-energized, a spring moves the spool to the other of its positions.

  • Patent number: 5498613
Abstract: Compositions and methods for prevention of adhesion formation, whereby an effective amount of at least one compound selected from dipyridamole and analogs thereof is administered as active agent for a period of time sufficient to permit tissue repair. The active agent is preferably administered in conjunction with a delivery vehicle (e.g., microcapsules, microspheres, lipid-based systems, viscous instillates and absorbable mechanical barriers) useful for maintaining local concentrations of the compound at an effective level.

  • Patent number: 5494164
Abstract: An egg carton integrally molded from a sheet of polystyrene material has a cover and a tray having a plurality of cells. Each cell has a bottom, and exterior and interior sidewalls extending from the bottom and surrounding said each cell and a hinge interconnecting the tray and the cover. According to one aspect of the invention, the sidewalls of each cell are configured such that expansion of the cell is biased toward the interior of the egg carton.

  • Patent number: 5488607
Abstract: A device evaluates the throughput of virtual circuits conveying cells and using an asynchronous time-division multiplex transmission medium. It comprises a store in which each virtual circuit is assigned a context containing a set of data defining the conditions for evaluating the throughput of the virtual circuit and data obtained from previous such evaluations. A clock supplies a current time and a processor unit reads the context of the respective virtual circuit when each cell is received. This context contains a start time which was the current time observed and stored when a previous cell of the virtual circuit in question was received. The start time is subtracted from the current time and the time difference obtained in this way together with the number of cells observed between that for which the start time was recorded and the present cell provide a basis for evaluating the throughput.

  • Patent number: 5485454
Abstract: In a system and method of communication between circuit mode units interconnected by point-to-point circuits in a subnetwork at the core of a communication installation the point-to-point circuits between units are structured and managed identically. A communication circuit is incorporated in each unit of the subnetwork, irrespective of the control unit, auxiliary unit or telephone and/or communication terminal interface controller type. This communication circuit handles the broadcasting over the point-to-point circuits to the other units of data from time-division multiplex circuits connected to it and switching of bytes addressed to it over the circuits.

  • Patent number: 5483394
Abstract: A track following positioning system including filtered average servo demodulators for maintaining the position of a magnetic tape head in alignment with tracks of data stored in magnetic medium. A servo head tracks a centerline in a servo written region of the magnetic medium and generates servo head signals corresponding to the displacement of the servo head from the centerline. A filtered average servo demodulator detects the servo head signals and generates servo error signals for realigning the tape head with respect to the magnetic medium in response thereto. To generate servo error signals, the filtered average servo demodulator peak detects and averages the rectified and filtered output signals and then subtracts a proportion of the peak detected signals from the average detected signals.

  • Patent number: 5481569
Abstract: A radio link for a digital radio transmission system having spatial and/or angular diversity is optimized in real time by first varying the relative phase .phi. between the two channels to locate an absolute minimum of the analog bit error rate function BER.sub.n (.phi.) with both channels having the same nominal attenuation level, and then by unbalancing the relative attenuation level T of the two channels in order to optimize the dispersion Ban.sub.n (T) of the recombined data spectrum while holding the relative phase at its previously optimized value.

  • Patent number: RE35114
Abstract: The fluid flow meter includes a flexible membrane formed of a flexible material and containing an apparatus for providing the membrane with resilience for undulation. The membrane is mounted in the fluid flow path such that the pair of faces simultaneously define with the housing fluid impermeable seals at least two different locations along the flow path. The membrane flexes so as to permit passage of discrete quanta of fluid, each having a known volume. The flow meter generates electrical signals corresponding to flexure of the membrane, and the electrical signals are monitored for determining a fluid flow rate.
