    Abstract: Apparatus for reforming an end wall of a container shell including a punch reciprocable along a path on a frame and a domer assembly at the end of the path. The domer assembly includes a domer pad and an annular forming element with biasing means between the pad, the annular forming element and the base. The biasing means for the annular forming element includes an annular chamber divided into spaced segments that each have a piston reciprocated therein and a pressurized fluid source connected thereto, while the domer pad is supported on a post that extends through a tubular column forming part of the base and has an enlarged pad at the opposite end which also is in communication with the pressurized fluid source to produce an end wall configuration that has a large outer annular arcuate portion merging with an annular flat support portion that has an upwardly-extending flat annular portion surrounding a central upward dome.

    Abstract: A cup feeding mechanism for a bodymaker includes a guide chute defining a vertical path with a stop located at the lower end of the path defining a transfer area. The stop has a specifically configured area for receiving each cup and defining a fixed position for the cup in the transfer area. A drive member is reciprocated transversely of the path and picks up cups from the transfer area and positively drives them into alignment with a ram that extends perpendicular to the axis of the path so that the cups are maintained in accurate alignment with the ram prior to being transferred through the bodymaker.

    Abstract: A modular system for producing triple-necked open ended containers includes three substantially identical necking modules each having the same frame and identical rotatable turrets which have a plurality of identical necking stations around the periphery. Each necking station also has a container pressurizing means in the form of an annular chamber which acts as a holding chamber prior to transmitting the pressurized fluid into the container.

The countersink has inner and outer substantially flat walls that are interconnected by an arcuate portion that has a radius of approximately 0.030 inches and the inner wall is connected to the periphery of the center panel through an arcuate portion that has a radius of approximately 0.025 inches. The outer flat wall has a length which is greater than the length of the inner flat wall and the outer flat wall defines an angle of less than five degrees with respect to a plane that extends perpendicular through the center flat panel. The inner flat wall has a length to locate the lower edge of the countersink about 0.

    Abstract: A color monitoring device includes a mechanism for removing containers from a path and accurately positioning a preselected area with a color monitor. The color monitor produces an output signal representative of the area being monitored which is amplified and fed to a computer where it is compared with reference signals. If the output signal is outside prescribed limits, the container is rejected, and if it is within prescribed limits, the container is returned to the path. A shuttle mechanism is activated by the computer and automatically removes a container from the path while returning a previously inspected container to the path. Stepper motors are used to vertically and horizontally position a selected point in front of the colorimeter.

    Abstract: A stock material for producing seamless containers from a black plate base includes applying a layer of insoluble crystalline phosphate to each surface of the black plate and subsequently producing a thin film of organic lubricating material on the exposed surfaces of the phosphate layers so that a drawn and ironed container can be produced from a flat blank without the use of any additional lubricants during fabrication. The weight of the phosphate layer for each surface of the black plate base is preferably less than 100 milligrams per square foot, while the weight of lubricating film is on the order of 70 to 360 milligrams per square foot. In the preferred embodiment, the phosphate layer is preferably in the range of 20 to 35 milligrams per square foot, and the lubricant layer is on the order of 70 to 180 milligrams per square foot.
