  • Patent number: 4435734
Abstract: High resolution video signals of bandwidth up to 25 mHz are recorded magnetically or optically, or are transmitted on a communications channel carrier with superior fidelity by using novel electronic circuit system including implementations of an FM modulator, writing amplifier, and wideband discriminator which enable coding and decoding with high accuracy, low noise, and low interference. The video signals are used to directly modulate a square wave carrier using an FM technique employing a very low center frequency-to-bandwidth ratio without need for subsequent frequency translations. A writing amplifier provides gain needed for saturated recording with unique provisions to balance transition amplitudes for minimum second harmonic distortion without affecting the primary phasing of transitions. A novel multiwinding inductor and pulse discriminator implementation is capable of demodulating the very wide deviation FM signal with good cancellation of the second harmonic and fundamental FM carrier spectrums.

  • Patent number: 4432226
Abstract: An oxygen detection system including two equal and symmetrically constructed major DC magnetic circuits each having an air gap which is alternatively filled with a sample and a reference gas. A magnetic bridge arm connects the major magnetic circuits in series opposition to derive a null response when the flux carried in the magnetic circuits is equal and a component of varying flux when the sample and reference gases are interchanged to cause an unequal flux to be developed in the circuits caused by a change in the reluctance across the gaps. An encircling inductance coil senses the flux in the null bridge arm which is electronically sampled in sychronism with the sample and reference gas interchange to develop a difference signal directly derived and proportional to the difference in magnetic susceptibility of the sample and reference gases. An active magnetic shield cancels stray fields from affecting the sensor.

  • Patent number: 4410968
Abstract: Information is stored, using a relatively low-power light beam, by redistributing the material in a deformable film. In a disc configuration, positioning of the light beam is achieved by referencing to a previously recorded track. In a document storage and retrieval system the document is scanned with the resultant scanned signal modulating the writing light beam producing a recorded track. This track is optically read with the resultant signal applied to a printer. For optimum utilization of the area, the recording and readout take place at constant velocity.

  • Patent number: 4403644
Abstract: A compact heat storage system for over heated rooms in which a high value thermal mass is mounted in a forced air flow path formed within a refrigeration heat exchanger loop including a condenser at the inlet and an evaporator at the outlet interconnected with a compressor and an expansion control. The thermal mass is preferably PCM or the equivalent. In the heat storage mode, with the compressor in operation, the air flow is heated at the condenser so that the heated incoming air passes through the thermal mass with high thermal difference resulting in better thermal transfer efficiency. After passage, the air has been cooled by thermal transfer with the thermal mass and is further cooled by the evaporator and then passed back into the room significantly cooler than when entered. When the room space needs heat from the system, the fan is operated without the compressor to pull the cool air from the room through the thermal mass to heat the same.

  • Patent number: 4313828
Abstract: A coupler or union for passing fluid under pressure from a column or tube in which the tube is received within a chamber in fluid communication through the floor within said coupler and forming a zero dead volume seal therewith, an annular recess in the coupler or union surrounding the tube or column and containing a balanced hydraulic seal in contact with the recess wall and tube or column and opening in communication toward said dead volume seal so that leakage from the latter under high pressure fills and activates the balanced hydraulic seal to the line pressure. The coupler or union is particularly applicable for high pressure liquid chromatograph column connections.

Abstract: A fluid thermosiphon system including a heat collection channel in communication above and below an insulating member to a heat storage region in a closed loop, the storage region includes spaced apart panels of an entirely encapsulated phase change material between which the heated fluid flows. The panels are adjacent the rear wall of the unit through which they disperse retained heat to the space. A wall or tilted roof unit suitable for built-in construction is disclosed, as is an exterior ground supported add-on unit. A liquid thermosiphon system is disclosed as the preferred embodiment. A gaseous system, using air, is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4212289
Abstract: A solar shutter or blind for windows using plastic vanes having horizontal channels for encasing a phase change material possessing a high value of heat of fusion at a fusion transition temperature somewhat above the desired ambient temperature of the room to be heated. In one form, the vanes are interconnected together with a reversing mechanism for turning the solar heat collection surfaces of the vanes inwardly or outwardly in relation to the window while in another form the vanes are swung as a unit to face outwardly as a shutter, alongside of a window or inwardly to reradiate energy through the window. In another form the vanes are pivotally mounted as a blind forming array and are provided with solar radiation reflective surfaces on one side and black surfaces on the lower side. In this way reversing the blind array causes reflection of unwanted or excess solar radiation and also provide diffuse illumination.

  • Patent number: 4165473
Abstract: The performance of microwave tubes at very high frequencies is limited by the ability of their thermionic cathodes to provide high emission current density in combination with long life and low evaporation of active material. An improved tube uses a cathode comprising a porous metal matrix consisting of a compacted mixture of tungsten and iridium particles, impregnated with a molten barium aluminate. Other alkaline earth oxides may be used as additives. The impregnated cathode outgasses easily and has a long life because it is not dependent on thin surface films. Thermionic emission is improved compared to a tungsten matrix, and barium evporation is reduced. The combination of power and frequency obtainable from the microwave tube is thereby significantly increased.

  • Patent number: 4155246
Abstract: Gas analyzing system using sonic wave shift over tubular gas column. Reference gas passed through column calibrates system to zero reference level. Sample gas having unknown amount of known gas component causes shift of wavelength distance in column. Phase comparator looks at shifted signal over .+-.90.degree. of phase shift. Integrator responds to comparator output to give dc output signal proportional to phase shift. Compensating circuits in final amplifier estimate probable final value based on rate of change of initial comparator output and use same to drive output meter.

  • Patent number: 4152605
Abstract: A system and method for regulating power demand in a power distribution system by means of time-of-day metering or remote control of energy-consuming appliances. The system provides means for producing control signals which can be reliably sent to numerous customers over a power distribution system from a central location. Means located at each electric power meter or controlled appliance monitors the signal on the power line to detect an incoming control signal. When a signal reaches the customer, a switch is operated either changing the metering rate or controlling the electricity supply to an appliance. Steps in the preferred method include modulating the line frequency by means of at least one signal frequency. The incoming power signal is continuously monitored at the customer load or meter and any control signals detected serve to actuate a load control switch or the like.
