Patent number: 4049865Abstract: A glass fiber sizing composition for the reinforcement of resin matrices is provided which comprises a homogeneous aqueous composition of two polyester resins. The first polyester resin is a water solubilized condensation cross-linkable, polyester resin, insoluble in aromatic solvents. The second polyester resin is insoluble but dispersible in water but insoluble in the first polyester resin. Thus, when the second polyester is blended with a water solution of the first polyester, a dispersion is produced. In this dispersion the water and the first polyester form the continuous phase and the second polyester forms the dispersed phase. A plasticizer and two silane coupling agents are also incorporated into the sizing composition. The first coupling agent is provided to promote adhesion between the glass fibers and the resin matrix and the second silane coupling agent is employed in the sizing composition to control the wetting of the glass fibers by the first silane coupling agent.Type: GrantFiled: November 11, 1976Date of Patent: September 20, 1977Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventor: John Maaghul

Patent number: 4047429Abstract: A method of forming a continuous film of an elastomeric latex and a phenolic resin comprising spraying a plurality of coats of the aqueous admixture onto a nonadherent surface. The nonadherent surface is at a temperature of 120.degree. F. or greater and each coat of the aqueous admixture is less than about 0.7 mil dry film thickness. The film so formed can be tested for physical properties and the testing results are capable of being correlated with the performance of glass fibers with the aqueous admixture coated thereon for reinforcement of elastomeric matrices.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1976Date of Patent: September 13, 1977Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Norman G. Patent number: 4046948Abstract: Acid resistant glass fibers are prepared by treating the surface of a siliceous glass fiber with an aqueous acid solution to increase the silica content thereof. The aqueous acid solution is removed from the surface of the glass fibers and the fibers are heated to dehydrate or partially dehydrate the surface. The glass fibers as produced have a dual composition; the outer surface of the fiber is rich in silica in relation to the core of the fiber. The fibers so formed are highly resistant to acid attack.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1976Date of Patent: September 6, 1977Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventor: Isaac A. Zlochower

Patent number: 4043329Abstract: A protective device is comprised of a rigid cup having sufficient volume to enclose the male genitals. A resilient padding is mounted on the edge of the cup and is adapted to contact the lower body. The resilient padding absorbs impact experienced by the cup. The resilient padding on the cup edge engages the body proximate to the superior ramii, the inferior ramii and the Ischial ramii of the pelvis with minimal contact with the interior upper thighs. The protective device so constructed causes impact experienced by the cup to be absorbed by the padding and the aforementioned portions of the pelvis.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1976Date of Patent: August 23, 1977Assignee: Caspel IndustriesInventor: Frank J. Patent number: 4030734Abstract: A table game has a substantially horizontal playing surface with a supplemental rebounding surface which can be suspended above the horizontal playing surface, or with a plurality of rebounding surfaces two of which are substantially perpendicular to the playing surface and another above the playing surface. The table game is constructed so that at least two players are on opposing sides of the rectangular horizontal playing surface, each player striking the ball so that it is directed to the opposing player. The transparent supplemental rebounding surfaces are preferably constructed of transparent material so that spectators can view the travel of the ball during play.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1975Date of Patent: June 21, 1977Inventor: Nicholas T. Patent number: 3993835Abstract: A substrate such as glass contains a coating of a transition metal oxide complex with an ortho functional aromatic compound which contains a functional group which can react with a phenolic or resorcinolic resin or other organic compound or polymer. The ortho functional aromatic compound can also be a phenolic or resorcinolic resin. The complex serves as a coupling agent between the substrate and the organic material. These coupling agents can be resinous coatings or they can be coatings which serve as a coupling agent type of composition for rendering the surfaces of the substrates more substantive or reactive to organic materials. The coatings are inorganic-organic complexes of a transition metal oxide or a hydroxide with an ortho functional aromatic compound. The aromatic compound can contain at least two functional groups in ortho position to each other and a functional group for interfacing or reacting with the organic material.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1973Date of Patent: November 23, 1976Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventor: Patrick M. Patent number: 3974914Abstract: A package for a roll of continuous sheet material is shown having a first hollow circular core on which the sheet material is wound with a tube within the core. The tube is of greater length than the core so that the ends thereof extend beyond the continuous roll. End plates are provided on opposite ends of the roll and are apertured for receiving the extending sections of the tube. The end plates support the roll so that when two of such rolls, with associated apparatus are stacked, the end plates bear any loading force associated with the stacking. The end plates, the core, the tube and the roll of material are secured in a unitary structure by fasteners attached to the opposing ends of the second tube. A hollow covering member open at both ends is placed over the roll.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1975Date of Patent: August 17, 1976Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Christopher G. Patent number: 3972703Abstract: A glass fiber attenuator is disclosed which is used in the fiber forming process. The attenuator is comprised of two rapidly moving endless belts which travel along a predetermined path. The belts have surface portions which engage glass fiber strand and apply attenuating forces to the fibers which are being drawn. The attenuator has a smooth surface bearing means to abruptly change the direction of movement of the belt with respect to the strand traveling along the predetermined path. At least a portion of one of the belts rides over a stationary member having sufficient porosity to pass a fluid therethrough. Adequate pressure of the fluid causes the belt to ride on the fluid along the predetermined path.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1975Date of Patent: August 3, 1976Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventor: Warren W.
