  • Patent number: 4499642
Abstract: A heavy-duty composite radial journal bearing and a method to produce it is described. A pattern of openings is formed through a bearing sleeve representing, for instance, axially aligned metal bars. The openings are subsequently filled wth a metal dissimilar to the sleeve. Filling may be done with the sleeve in place either on a journal or in a housing, in which case the bearing becomes integral to that member by fusion. Alternately, the sleeve may be filled upon a nonwettable mandrel and subsequently used as a floating ring or as a bushing. Final finish machining reveals a pattern which exists throughout the bearing of alternating areas of relatively hard metal and a softer antigalling metal.

  • Patent number: 4457384
Abstract: A backflow control system for use in a gas circulation roller cone rock bit is disclosed wherein a single unit combination liquid-separator and positive action poppet check valve is used to restrict the entrance of water into roller cone bearings during drilling and to restrict the ingestion of detritus into the bearings and into the bit chamber during drilling interruptions. A quick-change mounting permits easy transfer of the valve unit form bit to bit.

  • Patent number: 4456082
Abstract: This invention relates to large diameter raise bore rock bits. The invention comprises a means in which extensions may be attached to the outer diameter of the body of the rock bit, thus providing a variable diameter raise bore rock bit. The extensions are mounted to the primary body of the bit such that compressive loads are imposed on the attachment means. These compressive loads are transmitted from the extensions of the body by designing the extension portions of the bit such that they interlock to the basic bit body. The mating surfaces of the attachment means transmit predominantly compressive loads acting substantially normal to the load bearing surfaces. The attachment means are further designed to increase the grip of the extended bit portions as increased loads are applied to the body of the rock bit.

  • Patent number: 4444518
Abstract: A rock bit cone retention means is disclosed which primarily utilizes a series of segmented rings. The segmented rings are inserted into a relatively deep annular channel formed transverse to the axis of either a journal or a cone of a rock bit leg assembly. The complementary channel, shallow in depth, is formed in either the journal or the cone. The cone, when properly positioned on the journal, closes out the channel formed in both the cone and the journal. Upon assembly, the segments are urged within the deep groove or channel in the journal or the cone such that each of the segments do not protrude beyond the bearing surface as the cone is passed over an end of the journal. Means are provided adjacent the cone retention segment to accept a spring biasing means to urge each segment away from the bottom of the deep groove in the journal or cone.

  • Patent number: 4429854
Abstract: A resilient O-ring shaft seal for use in a rotary rock bit is described wherein the degree of squeeze imposed upon the O-ring seal is increased in one or more discrete steps, occurring as drilling conditions or bearing deterioration cause rising temperatures to be imposed on the seal. The squeeze is increased in discrete steps through a thermally related shape change in one or more nitinol, or the like, back up rings positioned adjacent to the packing ring seal housed within a seal gland. The seal gland is formed between a rock bit journal and a rock cutter cone rotatably mounted to the journal.

  • Patent number: 4428442
Abstract: This invention relates to rotary rock drilling apparatus, particularly roller cone rock bits used with dry drilling of rock formations. Mining bits are typically air-driven, air-lubricated roller cone rock bits having open bearings, the air being driven through the bearing system between the roller cones and their associated journals. A lubrication system is disclosed which drips a lubricant in liquid form into the air passages communicating with each of the bearings associated with, for example, the three roller cones of the rock bit. Oil is entrained, along with the compressed air, and is directed to the bearings for cooling and lubrication purposes.

  • Patent number: 4428588
Abstract: A novel annular seal packing ring, frustoconical in form with a parallelogram cross section. When loaded into a rectangular seal gland groove, the smaller diameter end is biased radially inward and the larger end is biased radially outward against the gland. The bias is developed primarily in a centrally encapsulated annular spring band. The largest outside diameter and the smallest inside diameter constitute the sealing surfaces of the seal ring.

  • Patent number: 4416554
Abstract: A chamfered intermediate thrust bearing is positioned between a rotating cutter and its bearing pin of an earth-boring rock bit. The chamfered intermediate bearing is so configured to be mechanically secured in place within the cone and to take outthrust loads, without rotation, that are directed axially against a radially disposed surface of the roller cone journal as the rock bit works in a borehole.

  • Patent number: 4416589
Abstract: A positive displacement liquid pump having a free-moving weight mass spaced from and oscillatably positioned concentrically within a cylindrical housing is disclosed. A pair of cooperating one-way valves, one valve communicating with a central passage defined by the weight mass while the other valve communicates with an inlet to the housing, coact to draw in fluid or liquid from a supply source. As the oscillatable weight mass moves away from the inlet, the one-way inlet valve opens, filling a chamber behind the weight mass. The one-way valve in the weight mass simultaneously closes enabling the weight mass to drive fluid out of the reservoir chamber at an exit end of the housing, the valves acting oppositely when the weight mass oscillates back toward the housing inlet. The free-moving weight mass suspended within the pump housing is set in motion by the oscillatory motion of a vibration source without direct mechanical actuation of the device from a power source.

  • Patent number: 4412786
Abstract: This invention relates to a positive displacement pump. The pump utilizes a source of rotary motion in the back and forth, clockwise, counterclockwise direction. The rotary oscillatory motion drives an annular piston weight mass in a toroidal rotary track, back and forth within the track in combination with at least a pair of one-way valves to pump fluid through the pump. Specially designed electric motors that rock back and forth, without a 360.degree. rotation, for example, may be coupled to a positive displacement pump of this invention. In the medical profession, this pump may be used to pump liquids at a very slow, precise rate to transmit, for example, a variety of medications into a patient.

  • Patent number: 4410284
Abstract: A rolling cutter drill bit with at least one downwardly extending leg which supports a cantilevered bearing shaft thereon is disclosed. A cutter cone is rotatably mounted on the bearing shaft by radial bearing means and by axial bearing means. A radially disposed thrust washer is positioned between the journal and the cone, the washer further defining a lubricant transferring means in each radially disposed side of the thrust washer to assure adequate lubrication of the roller cone on the journal bearing.

  • Patent number: 4407378
Abstract: A method to retain a nozzle in a rock bit is disclosed for use particularly with air-type roller cone rock bits. A plastic nozzle body is formed with a multiplicity of radially disposed fins equidistantly spaced on the periphery of the nozzle body. A nozzle retention hole is formed in the body of the rock bit with a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the fins on the plastic nozzle. As the plastic nozzle body is forced into the nozzle retention hole, the fins deflect slightly in a downstream direction and "bite" against the nozzle retention walls formed by the bit body.

  • Patent number: 4406587
Abstract: A positive displacement liquid pump having a free stroking piston slidably positioned within a cylindrical housing is disclosed. A pair of cooperating one-way valves, one valve communicating with a central passage defined by the piston while the other valve communicates with an inlet to the housing, coact to draw in fluid from a source of liquid. As the piston moves away from the inlet the one-way inlet valve opens filling a chamber behind the piston. The one-way valve in the piston simultaneously closes enabling the piston to drive fluid out of the reservoir chamber at an exit end of the housing, the valves acting oppositely when the piston oscillates back toward the housing inlet. The free stroking piston within the pump is set in motion by the oscillatory motion of vibration alone without direct mechanical piston actuation from a power source. The pump may cooperate with a fluid regulator to control flow of fluid from the pump housing.
