  • Patent number: 6993596
Abstract: An Internet user transfers directly to a domain within an e-community without returning to a home domain or re-authenticating. The user's home domain server prepares and forwards a home domain identity cookie (DIDC) with an enrollment request to a user's browser, with the enrollment request being redirected to an affiliated domain server in the e-community. The affiliated domain server prepares and sends an affiliated DIDC with an enrollment confirmation to the user's browser, redirecting the enrollment confirmation to the home domain server. The home domain server modifies the home DIDC to include a symbol which indicates successful enrollment at the affiliated site. The process may be repeated for a plurality of affiliated domains to achieve automatic enrollment a portion of or an entire e-community.

  • Patent number: 6985910
Abstract: A tilting tree, spinning cones process is employed to map n-dimensional array data originally in markup language, to an n-dimension table suitable for use by COBOL application programs. Mapping is performed without scanning the result array for an empty slot. This allows the result array slots to be pre-loaded with state data. During mapping, the hierarchical nature of the markup language n-dimensional data is represented in two-dimensions using an inverted tree structure having cones for each array level. The tree is tilted to bring a member of a given level into contact with one of the axes of the tree graph, followed by spinning appropriate cones to bring a certain member of that level into contact with the same axis. This results in the ability to use a one-dimensional mapping array. The dimension offset on the mapping axis can then be used as an index value into the mapped array output for storage or retrieval of element data.

  • Patent number: 6983200
Abstract: Diagnostic codes from a vehicle or other system in transit are transmitted to an opportunity server, which forwards the codes to a supplemental diagnostic service provider. The diagnostic service provider determines if supplemental diagnostics software functions are available, and if so, downloads them to the vehicle. After executing the supplemental diagnostics, the vehicle reports updated codes to the opportunity server. Multiple cycles of selection, downloading and execution of supplemental diagnostics may be performed until fault isolation is achieved, following which the opportunity server issues requests for bids to potential repair service provides. Responding offers are received, coalesced and presented to the operator. The operator of the vehicle is presented with one or more coalesced offers, upon selection of which, a service is scheduled.

  • Patent number: 6970907
Abstract: A system and method for reformatting chain forwarded and chain replied electronic messages into thread-of-discussion messages for improved readability and reader comprehension. The chained electronic messages are parsed into discussion entries which are then sorted by a preferred order, such as last-to-first by date of creation. Extraneous fields and data which are not part of the substantive discussion are removed from the discussion entries. Long or full electronic mail addresses are replaced by abbreviations or preferred nicknames which may be found in an address book. Finally, the sorted discussion entries with source abbreviations or preferred nicknames are combined and output as a thread-of-discussion format message.

  • Patent number: 6961536
Abstract: A broadcast receiver which automatically tunes to a signal source depending on a set of rules and vehicle state conditions, such as seat occupancy, door sensors, time, day of the week, weather conditions, program content rating, vehicle location, user language preference, user identity and driver preferences. The user can configure a set of rules which causes the receiver to be automatically retuned in response to changes in conditions of the vehicle, such as favorites for the commute to work and favorites while driving with children. This eliminates the driver's distraction while operating the vehicle of searching for stations and routinely changing the station setting, thereby enhancing the usefulness, convenience, and safety of the vehicle broadcast receiver.

  • Patent number: 6950825
Abstract: A security policy process which provides role-based permissions for hierarchically organized system resources such as domains, clusters, application servers, and resources, as well as topic structures for messaging services. Groups of permissions are assigned to roles, and each user is assigned a role and a level of access within the hierarchy of system resources or topics. Forward or reverse inheritance is applied to each user level-role assignment such that each user is allowed all permissions for ancestors to the assigned level or descendants to the assigned level. This allows simplified security policy definition and maintenance of user permissions as each user's permission list must only be configured and managed at one hierarchical level with one role.

  • Patent number: 6934913
Abstract: A graphical user interface and method for data entry of a plurality of fields of information in a computer system, such as a web browser interface, using small scrolling and paging of tabular data and entry fields. A JAVA script is employed to produce a form-like user interface in which a user may enter information in fields shown in a graphical user interface (“GUI”) window display area. The GUI is provided with a NEXT button which allows the user to indicate that he or she has more data to enter than can be entered in the currently available view of the form in the GUI window display area. The script saves the currently entered data into a set of hidden fields or variables, and provides a new screen with clear fields for additional data entry. By selecting the PREVIOUS button provided by the JAVA script on the GUI, the user may cause the script to recall previously saved data from the hidden fields or variables and to redisplay them so that the user may review or edit previously entered information.

  • Patent number: 6918283
Abstract: An apparatus for demonstrating, investigating and observing Brownian motion and temperature of a medium, such as gas or liquid, uses a small particle which is diamagnetically suspended in the medium. The tiny magnetized particle having a known mass is levitated using a diamagnetic technique, and the displacement of the particle over time is observable, which can be used to determine a temperature of the medium. Optionally, a second particle is suspended in a vacuum but mechanically connected to the same apparatus as the first enclosure with the first particle, thereby allowing observation and measurement of non-Brownian movement of the structure, and allowing more precise observation of Brownian movement effects on the first suspended particle.

  • Patent number: 6919907
Abstract: A client-server arrangement for camera viewing using digital cameras across a computer network. A camera server controls a motorized gimbal which determines the viewing angle of a camera, according to signals from a client computer which is equipped with an eye movement tracking system. Movements of the viewer's eyes result in changes in viewing angle of the remote cameras. The original full-resolution image is divided into a foveal area and a peripheral area. Subsequently, if a change in the peripheral area of a field of view is detected relative to the most recently displayed image, the viewing angle of the cameras is changed to center on the detected change, and an image is captured of this anticipated future field of view. When the viewer eventually changes his or her point of interest to the area of detected change, the pre-captured image is transmitted immediately for viewing.

  • Patent number: 6917715
Abstract: A client-server arrangement for camera viewing using digital cameras across a computer network. A camera server controls a motorized gimbal to affect camera viewing angle changes according to signals from a client computer which is equipped with an eye movement tracking system. Movements of the viewer's eyes result in changes in viewing angle of the remote cameras. Prior to transmission, the server divides the original full-resolution image into a foveal area and a peripheral area. The peripheral area data is reduced in resolution, thereby reducing the image data size, required transmission bandwidth, transmission size, and image update latency. Later, the full resolution data from the peripheral area of the image may be transmitted to the client machine so that the full image may be rendered in original full resolution.

  • Patent number: 6915519
Abstract: A method for allowing an enterprise application server to integrate and make use of any messaging product or products that support a standard messaging service interfaces. In a first phase of the method, an administrator creates and installs a new messaging provider on an application server, creates new messaging resource objects such as connection factories and destinations, and then binds these into the original namespace of the default messaging provider. An application which references the new messaging provider is then deployed onto the application server. Then, when the application program is executing, it may perform a lookup for the new messaging service, which the application server performs through the default context factory to obtain a new messaging object, which is then handed to the requesting application for use as needed.

  • Patent number: 6898657
Abstract: A multi-processor arrangement having an interprocessor communication path between each of every possible pair of processors, in addition to I/O paths to and from the arrangement, having signal processing functions configurably embedded in series with the communication paths and/or the I/O paths. Each processor is provided with a local memory which can be accessed by the local processor as well as by the other processors via the communications paths. This allows for efficient data movement from one processor's local memory to another processor's local memory, such as commonly done during signal processing corner turning operations. Configurable signal processing logic may be configured to host one or more signal processing functions which allow data to be autonomously accessed from the processor local memories, processed, and re-deposited in a local memory.

  • Patent number: 6883007
Abstract: A system and method for normalizing encoded text data such as Unicode which is extensible without use of character definition tables through the use of metadata tagging. First, metadata characters, which have no effect on the interpretation of the raw text data, are used to express higher order protocols of encoded two text strings. Next, meta normal form conversion is performed on one or both of two strings to be compared, if both strings are not already in the same meta normal form. Finally, content equivalence determination is performed in which the characters in each string are compared to each other. If a string contains a metadata character, that character is ignored for purposes of equivalence comparison. The remaining characters represent the pure content of the string, e.g. characters without any particular glyph representation.

  • Patent number: 6873338
Abstract: A two-dimensional array of non-uniformly spaced pixels having a plurality of overlaid pixel sets for avoiding moiré patterns in digital images by avoiding producing an inherent “frequency” or pattern that may interfere with details or harmonics present in the image source, thereby eliminating the occurrence of moiré patterns and the need for application of image processing to remove Moiré patterns. A first set of pixels, (imaging sensors or display elements) are arranged along a two axes according to a non-uniform predictable process. The first set pixels spacing inherently produces non-uniformly spaced and sized “gaps”, in which additional sets of pixels potentially having a different characteristics from the first set, may be placed, thereby yielding an array comprised of multiple overlaid arrangements of non-uniformly spaced pixels. As such, images samples from or displayed on the additional sets of pixel sensors also avoid production of Moiré patterns.
